THE llllil Plllll' Anything as intangible as a spirit that is The representation of a school is no recent development, rather it is the outgrowth OT years at living. So it is with The Viking Spirit. Walker County High School, as an institution, had been in existence many years betore the term Viking was applied To any of its Teams. Prior to The Tall of i920 The one sport at Walker had been basketball. That Tall a Tew hardy souls dared The rigors of a new-Tangled game and football had its inception aT Walker County High School. The first session was comparatively uneventTul, but There were no serious casualties. lt was in The Tall of 'Qi that Tootball became a major sport. Under The tutelage of Coach Christopher The Team waded Through its opposition without creating much notice until iT met Central High at Birmingham. AT that Time iT was Birmingham's one high school and They definitely felt They were slumming by Taking on a Team made up oT coal miners and Tarrners. By a queer Twist of circumstance The Walker players were unusually tall, big, and blond. That fact, ioined to The viciousness and unexpectedness at Their attack in defeating Central 6-O, led the Birmingham sports writers To refer To Them as the Vikings. A later game in which they deteated Sidney Lanier won Tor them the envied title of State Champions. Page 4 So iT was ThaT The name, Viking, came To be applied To a Walker CounTy High School Team, and so iT was ThaT The spiriT which led an unknown Team To The championship of The sTaTe came To be known as The Viking SpiriT. This same spiriT has imbued all Walker Teams and led Them a second Time To The same sTaTe championship. Though The presenT Viking squad ouTnumbers The earlier Teams, They have preserved inTacT The legacy oT spiriT passed on To Them. This year's Team includes many younger broThers and sons of older players. Four members of The l92l Team have sons who have played Tor Walker . . . William Lacy Brakeiield, Jr., son of Lacy Brakefield, P. L. Dodd, Jr., son of Pervie Dodd, Bobby Jcnes, son of Bruce Jones, and John Wilson, son of Coleman Wilson. Little did we realize back in '34 how long and hard would be that trudge up the ladder of success. lt was a sad day in our young lives when we had to give up our freedom of childhood play and face the daily encounter of mastering our ABCs. We really thought we were getting up in the world when, in the second grade, our one ambition was fulfilled, We were admitted as accomplished musicians, we thought, in the Kiddy Band. The song we played most frequently was There's Something About a Soldier. Maybe that's where our hero-worship originated-eh, girls? Our third year of school found us entering, much to our delight, the little white school house. Remember, the one with just two rooms? Within these walls we struggled abut not in vain-to master those dreadful multiplication tables. This was also a great year for the boys, they began their career as officers in the Safety Council. We hope that the fourth grade is the only year in which our editor had good reason to hang his head in shame. Even after much coaxing and persuading, we could not get any of the details out of him but we did find out this much-it was his first whipping. It seems that quite a mix-up occurred to us in the fifth grade. Remember that wonderful play we all had looked forward to so eagerly? The one in which Dot Barrentine was picked to be Mrs. Spratt and the fattest boy in the room Mr. Spratt. Everything was O.K. until the day before the play took place when the teacher discovered her horrible mistake-she had the characters backwards! We had to stuff Dot with pillows and slenderize the boy. Please don't ask us how we did this, Ah, a new school. That's not the big event of our sixth year. Would onyone like to know where Ann Speed got her pen name-Sally Rand? Well, here's the big secret- the accident occurred when we were playing jump rope. Yes, you guessed it, she lost her SKIRT. That, too, was the year when yours truly's shoes floated down Town Creek, but they were retrieved by some courteous gentleman t?l who didn't mind getting his feet wet. iContinued on page 292 ir ir 'A' if 'A' uk if 'lr Page 2l 'U 'r gl V A lv ' M a 41 Aoron, Dorothy Alexonder, John Allred, Oneil Appling, Billy Boker, Lofton Borrentine, Doris Borton, Betty Block, Agnes Block, Clifton Block, Eleonor Brody, John Broketield, Maxine Bridier, Jornes Brown, Sodie Burgess, Inez Burkett, Lorene JAMES HAROLD WAKEFIELD, Junior Red Cross Council President G 1 1 -1' V ULASS it 'E ' - 'Vi' 4,-rua SM l l Q er V P'-, qua -'Q I rq f? It was sponsored by the D. O. Class and the staff consisted of a small group of D. O.'s who were connected in some way with local papers. After burning the midnight oil for about two weeks, the staff published the first STAR. And so with time THE STAR has grown to be among the best school publications in Alabama. The staff consists of John O'Rear, Dewey Burton, and Barbara Burrow in the editorial department, Billy Appling and Eleanor Black in the advertising department, Edward Harbison as circulation managerg and Mr. Watson as advisor. THE STAR is scheduled to make its last appearance in May ot TQ46. This is because of the fact that the publishers are members of the graduating class and there will be no one to carry on. We, the staff, wish all students the best ot luck through the years and thank you for the tine cooperation given us during the lite of THE STAR. Page 98 Black, Clifton, Cain, Terry, Crumpton, L.
