f .f ' , f, Q f I VI, W USS WALDRON proudly bears the name of LCDR John C. Waldron, Commanding Officer of Torpedo Squadron EIGHT. He was reported missing in action on 4 June 1942 while engaged in flight operations during the Battle of Midway. After commissioning on 8 June 1944 WALDRON was assigned to the Pacific Fleet, becoming a part of Vice Admiral Mitcher's famed Task' Force 58 and receiving her baptism by fire in the initial strikes against the island of Formosa in January 1945. Later, moving into the Tokyo Bay area, WALDRON rammed and sank a Japanese picket boat. ln August of the same year the ship steamed alongside USS MISSOURI into Tokyo Bay to ac- cept the unconditional surrender of Japan. After the Korean war, in 1953, she cruised around the world, later finding herself at the scene of the Suez and Cyprus crises. In June 1962 WALDRON entered Norfolk Naval Shipyard for her FRAM ll modernization covering all shipboard systems. Upon com- I pletion, she returned to the Atlantic Fleet and in August, 1965 served as a unit of the GEMINI 5 Recovery team where she was second ship on the scene of the splashdown. In December she again worked with the Manned Spacecraft Forces dur- ing the GEMINI 6!7 mission. July 1966 found the WALDRON be- ginning a seven-month deployment to the Far East and Vietnam. While there she was active in gunfire support, plane guard duty, and am- phibious landings. Eight months after returning from WestPac WALDRON deployed to the Medi- terranean, participating in support of fast carrier task groups and am- phibious operations, returning to Norfolk in January 1969. After a change of command she returned to the Mediterranean to repeat these duties on 8 Sept 1969 and after many miles steamed and many long hours she made up at berth 232, D815 Piers, US Naval Station, Norfolk on 28 March 1970.
