License! Your key to freedom. From sopho- more year on, there was always someone you envied because he or she had a license or even a car . . . a first step to independence. You watched and waited, maybe even saving money from a part-time job for a car or motorcycle. Then came junior year. Sure, Driv- er Ed. costs money, but you found it somehow. You took classes in the lecture hall after school or in the evening in Wakefield Center. You eventually earned your permit, and mom or dad took you out for that first shaky drive. Then came driving hours during study halls where you learned lor tried to learnl the rules of the road. You gained confidence, but there was still the big test ahead. You heard how so-and-so had failed or had almost failed, and you worried. Hill stops, three-point turns, directional drive, emergency brake, gas, backing up, hand sig- nals. You hoped that you remem- bered it all. Then the big day came. You put on extra deodorant, glanced at the li- cense manual one last time and went to the Registry. There now, it wasn't as bad as you thought. You got it! Dad, can I borrow the car?
