Preparing For College: Class Rank When the Class of 1986 entered Wakefield High School, students were on the road that led not only to a high school diploma, but beyond, to a life in the real world. For many students, this road would include some college expe- rience. Preparation for college began early in high school, when a student chose either a college preparatory or a general course of study. Some stu- dents were off with the gun, choosing difficult academic classes, undertaking independent study, taking music class- es after . school hours, and going to summer school. The reasons for this intensity were twofold: These motivat- ed students were interested in chal- lenging themselves intellectually and in augmenting their class rank, an impor- tant reference that colleges use in the admissions process. During the WHS career of the Class of 1986, the deter- mination of class rank became a source of controversy, with some ar- guing that the system favored certain students, was thus unfair, and should Q QN is F ,E ,i J' 1, fi .,, be changed. Consequently, a new class rank was designed and put into effect for future graduating classes. Xf-

Sports At WHS Sports have long been an important part of life at WHS. When athletes join a team, be it football, baseball, softball, tennis, or track, they take on a responsibility, they agree to be loyal to their school, their coach, and their teammates. But more im- portantly, an athlete agrees to be true to himself, to give his best ef- fort even when he does not really want to, knowing that that is the only way he can truly feel good about his performance. These are the ideals a WHS stu- dent-athlete tries to live up to. These ideals may not always be reached, but there is something good in just striving for them. As one student from the class of 1986 stated, Winning wasn't the most important thing, though we had a winning season. lt was being on the team knowing that we had to work together to accomplish anything lt was a good feeling
