So decided the staff of the 1949 Purple and Gold. Around school, we hear the students sing, whistle, or hum songs new and old that have become a part of our everyday lives. It is natural, then, that songs should be the basis of the theme this year. Our book will help estab- lish in your memory songs especially connected with Waite High School. TABLE OF CCJNTENTS . . . Faculty . . f'Here'.r to the Purple anal Hereir to the Gola' ' EDICATIO The purpose of this dedication is to say thanks to a teacher who has done a great deal for our school in the educational and social fields. It is fitting to dedicate the 1949 Purple and Gold to a fine teacher and a great friend of all the students, a man who has been with Waite for twenty-three years, Mr. jesse Steiner. Prior to teaching social studies at Waite, Mr. Steiner taught for seven years in a one-room country school and three years at Bluffton High School. He graduated from Bluffton College with an A.B. degree and later received his Masters degree at Ohio State University. When Mr. Steiner first started teaching at Waite, he was athletic equipment manager for six years and later an advisor to the Pro and Con history club. His hobby interests include stamp collecting, fishing, and chess, the latter being his favorite. Mr. Steiner will long be remembered in the hearts and minds of the many students that pass in and out of Waite High School. XVe are proud to dedicate this book to him. He is the only one of the Waite faculty who is a member of Phi Delta Kappa, honorary educational fraternity. Cmories, Memories, Days of Long Ago HZ hen Day Is Done f 'Z 'l 4-ruin! It was a hard climb, but we made it. May this position as Senior be an inspiration to all green Freshmen. Some of the events that made this year of '49 stand out in our memories were the Senior Prom and Banquet at the Womans Building on Jan- uary 19, and the Senior Picnic. The two most impressive occasions were Baccalaureate and Commencement at the Paramount Theatre on June 9. We wish to extend our appreciation to Miss Marion Hart for her undying patience and help with all Senior activities. 10 Amy Smith Barbara Uhler Jack Zedro PUBLICITY Charles O'Shea Carol Bercher Marty Miklosek Janice Jenkins COMMENCEMENT Janice jenkins Carol Burkett Pat Cooper Gage Mersereau Stewart Petersen Barbara Porter Bob Horst PICNIC Harry Myrice Arnold Steedman Doris Douglass Gene Watkins Goldie Bonis Dick Hodulik Al DeArmond FORR12sT ADAMSON- 1'111 alzmyr chmizzg min- Lani Forum, jr. D ick Wargowsky Dick Wargowsky, Jeanette Evanoff Dick Bellas, Angelo Kostotf The Juniors filled their calendar with many interesting activities this year. Possibly the most antici- pated event was the distribution of rings, which took place on February 18. It wasn't difficult to pick out the Juniors the next day because they were all showing off their new jewelry. March 25 was the evening for the presentation of two one-act plays, A Ghost of a Show and The Pnettiest Girl In Townf' A skating party in the spring was sponsored by the Juniors. The big social event of the year was the Junior Prom, June 8, at El Rancho, which served as a perfect climax to the year. Their Christmas project consisted of selling Christmas greens and candy. Everyone enjoyed the Christmas program given in the auditorium, sponsored by the Council. A new rest-room and hall patrol was started and a jingle Contest was given in order to arouse the interest of the student body in keeping the school clean. Other activities included an old clothes drive and a basketball mass meeting, given just before the Central-Waite game. A dance was held in the gym February 25. Ping-pong and other games were played at this dance. The use of activity cards was started at the end of the year. These cards will enable the Council to keep an accurate report of the activities of every student for the time of his enrollment at Waite. The Quill and Dagger Literary Society started the year off by having their annual initiation at Navarre Park shelter house. We wonder that the fellows remain friends after these initiations. The D.'s lost their traditional Q.D.-Forum football game by a score of 28-0. Revenge for this defeat was gained later in the year in the Q.D.-Forum basketball game which the Q.D.'s won 34-22. Intense rivalry always makes these games interesting, no matter what the score. One of the high-lights of the year was the Massillon mass meeting sponsored by the Q.D.'s. The fellows always have fun putting on the show, even though they never win any prizes. Other activities of the year included a hayride, chaperoned by Mr. Arthur Mills and Mr. Claire Dunn. The group also sponsored a successful dance in the gym on March 4. Many of the fellows bought Q.D. pins this year. We would like to thank Mr. Mills and Mr. Dunn for their help as advisors. Spreads were held during the months of October and March and proved a very happy occasion both for the old and new members. The spreads were held at the homes of Susie Helman and Margaret Allison. Another and perhaps the most important high- light of the Zets' busy year comes in the spring when the three Literary Societies give their an- nual formal dance, The Tri-Lit, held at the El Rancho on April 8. One of the newest organizations at school is the Morrison R. Waite Club of the Future Teachers of America. Our group is one chapter of a national organization which has chapters in all Toledo high schools as well as in the larger cities throughout the United States. At the name implies, the membership is composed of high school students who intend to go to college and take up teaching as a profession. Special attention is being given this group by experienced educators with the hope of increas- ing the membership of the teaching profession and the desire of having students realize that education is an acceptable profession. At an impressive initiation program in the library on March 15, talks were given to the members by Mr. Conser, Mr. Klag, and Miss Griffith. The outstanding event of the year's activities was the visit to the University of Toledo on April 8 in order to study the offerings of the college of Education. Mr. Milton Williams, advisor, has conscientiously attempted to carry on this work at Wfaite. We know that his patience and interest will be rewarded when his future teachers will take positions in school systems in Ohio and in other parts of the country. 1 l l R0u'1fDick Whitsimn, XValter jones, Chuck Harrison, john Nicholas, Bill Wliite, Ron Bedee, Merritt Schaeffer, George Antoine. The club, under the supervision of Coach Frank Pauly and Coach Claire Dunn, has two events annually, a roast and a wrestling show put on by the hygiene class. The wrestling show was put on March 21 during second hour in a very fine program, as in other years, with the boys all grunting and groaning to win. The boys showed great sportsmanship towards each other during the entire show, and when it was all over they were friends again. The annual roast was held in May and was the only time all the group was together during the year. They also prepared short plays and talks to be presented before Miss Adams' salesmanship class. A roast and hayride in the fall and a picnic in the spring were two of the social events on the calendar of the Future Retailers. An employers' banquet in May was a fitting climax to the years activities. Proof of this statement is the fact that they have made a tour of the grade schools, played for the Merci Train, and entertained at the football banquet. Last August they played for the Cleveland Browns and marched with the Musical Majorettes. In October they made a trip to Detroit to play for the Detroit Lions at . one of the football games. Twenty letters were given out at the end of the season. Outstanding backs were Ted Eckhardt, Jerry Fralick, john Galyas, Dan Zunk, Mark McKenzie, and john Ahumada. Especially promising line- men were Andrew Pocsi, Duran Frumencio, Richard Ferguson, Bob Woolaver, and Bill Steffin. Keep the names of these fellows in mind. Central Starting out the season with wins over Deshler, Defiance, Gibsonburg, and Perrysburg, the team then lost three straight games to DeVilbiss, Scott, and Woodward before finding themselves and finishing third in city league competition, winning seven games and losing five. This year's basketball squad was the best Waite has produced in many years, never losing a game by more than nine points. In twenty-four games the team scored 1043 points to 957 for the opponents. The leading scorer was Ray Spencer with 289 points, followed by Stewart Petersen with 204 points. The remaining three men of the first five were Bob Horst, Harry Myrice, and Chuck O'Shea. Returning men for next year's varsity squad are jack Griffin, Paul Spencer, joe Romano, Ray Ritzenthaler, and Wayne Sheeley. The coaches of the city schools chose Ray Spencer for the first team of the all-city selections, Bob Horst on the second team, and Stewart Petersen received honorable mention. Ray Spencer was also a member of the all-tournament team and received honorable mention in the state. In the sectional tournament Waite went to the semi-finals defeating Woodward in a thrilling double overtime game by a score of 43 to 41, before being defeated by Central 44 to 53. Coach Bill Fetters deserves much credit for turning out a basketball team that he can be proud to say he coached. 101 lt'n1z'l --Melvin Fallon, Bill Heber, Dan Zunk. jim Zieroff, Fred Abbeglen. M a comber Coach George Konnert seemed to have tough luck in the '48-'49 season, for his lightweight squad won only six games and lost twelve. The fellows tried but couldn't seem to make the grade. Regular practice couldn't be started until the football season was over because several of the squad were on the lightweight football team. Inexperience was also a handicap for three of the squad are Freshmen. High point men for the season were Fred Abbeglien, Jim Zieroff, and Wayne Sheeley. Other reg- ular players were Ray Gunner, Dan Zunk, Ronnie Davis, Bill Heber, Melvin Fallon, and jim Koroloff. Conser, for the fine job of keeping our school running as smoothly as he has for the past twenty years. During the course of these years, he has given help to students and faculty alike. He has made it possible for worthy students to obtain scholarships for colleges and has given recommenda- tion for other students to obtain jobs. He has done splendid work in keeping our school standards as high as other high schools. We are lucky to have such a grand principal and gr-eat friend. The problems of the girls at Waite are handled with care and helpful guidance by Dean Marguerite Griffith In addition to taking care of attendance, Miss Griffith gives advice to those who need her help and assists in obtaining jobs for some of the girls. Quiet and efficient in her work, Miss Gritfith is a valuable person in our everyday school life. If a fellow has a problem which he can not solve himself, or if he is in need of any kind of assistance, he takes his worries to Mr. Fred Klag, Dean of Boys, who, after being at Waite since 1914, is an old hand at giving helpful advice. He has the task of taking cane of boys' truancies, their discipline problems, and locating jobs. is . 31 M GC 79 An Apple for the Teacher Miss Mathilda Adams . . . Commercial. Mr. Richard Ahlf . . . Visitors, students, and faculty at Waite receive a very good impression when they go to our office and are greeted by the congenial and co- operative office force. These ladies find time to become a friend to everyone in addition to doing their work efficiently. Mrs. June Wintermantel has charge of scholastic records and requirements, particularly for the Seniors, and also serves as Mr. Conser's secretary. She is willing to help any student who needs assistance in checking up on his units and credits. Mrs. Ruth Brenneman is the official school treasurer. It is her task of handling all money, paying all bills, keeping the books for the school and all the activities that makes her a valuable person in the office. Mrs. Nina Trask is in charge of withdrawals and entries and attendance statistics. She also keeps records of student class standings. The faculty payroll is an additional part of her work. Mrs. Eva Taylor is in charge of the bookroom. She keeps the records of all books handed out to students, both the regular texts and the supplementary reading material. Mrs. Taylor also assists the deans with excuses and attendance problems. sealed air space between-serves thousands of home owners in Picture Win- dows and other sash. Recently, more and more schools have speci- fied Tlaermopane units for press boxes in stadiums. Since Tbermopane minimizes frost and condensation, games get better press coverage because reporters can see every play even in crisp cold weather. A Tbermopane-em closed press box also is quieter for sportswriters covering a game. Tbermopane is readily available for all types of glazing.
