iii' fs. ...tl LIBRARY TRAINING The first year trainees sign the stu- dents' admit slips as they enter the li- brary and go back to their rooms. They charge out books, card them when they are returned, and place them on the shelves. Their other duties are varnish- ing new books, and taking care of maga- zines and newspapers, and filing the back issues. The second year trainees make out cards for the catalogue and file them, look for reference material, and find information for ordering library material. Top: Speed test coming up? Bottom: Accuracy counts, Patsy. COMMERCIAL The purpose of business education is to train students for commercial jobs. In high school, students are offered typing, shorthand, transcription, book- keeping, and general business courses. Although many of the students are not planning to enter the business field, it will be useful for them to take a course such as typing. -1, I Shellacking books is part of library work. OFFICE TRAINING l'H f'4i The girls who take Office Training learn to be office assistants, They are taught to file cards, answer phone calls, make absence and cafeteria lists, take care of correspondence, operate various machines, and type reports. The study of plants and animals, which also include the organs and functions of the human body, is Biology. Then there is Chemistry which deals with matter of the universe and the changes in its composition. The study of Physics deals with matter and energy. A solid foundation in fundamentals of science gives the students the necessary back- ground for future study. Newton's third law of motion. knows. Richard rn F .Q i' MATHEMATICS Each student must have one credit of math to graduate, for skill in mathematics is essential to all students. Subjects offered high school students to prepare them for different fields are algebra, geom- etry, trigonometry, and high school arithmetic. HL., n

AGRICULTURE The purpose of the Agriculture pro- gram is to prepare the boys to become better farmers. The boys are busy learn- ing methods of farming in various ways and in operating machines. Some of the projects that the boys take up are rais- ing chickens, heifers, and swineg garden- ing: air layeringg and caring for plants in the greenhouse. The boys sell their products to earn some money. Weed-killing is a tedious but necessary job. Boys return to classroom for lecture, discussions. HOMEMAKING Girls in Homemaking learn to cook and sew. ln addition they take up child care, family relations, interior decorat- ing, and good grooming. Boys also take Homemaking and learn similar things. An interesting elective for boys is Senior Home Problems where they study all aspects of family living. f J.- Fi I- Making muffins in kitchen. Cleaning chickens is part of Ag work. PTC The Part-Time Cooperative Program is a cooperative venture between the plantation and the Department of Public Instruction. A selected group of students is given a training program in every de- partment of the plantation. Skills de- veloped are in carpentry, painting, plumb- ing, garage work, electric shop, irrigation and metal shop. The boys are also given leadership training in school. Boys can learn to sew.
