COM i MANDING OFFICER CAPTAIN VAR A, IOH N UNITED STATES NAVY Captain JOHNSON was born in Centerville, Massachusetts, 1 March 1924. He attended public schools in the town of Barnstable on Cape Cod. Upon commissioning and graduation from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in 1943, he reported for duty as Navigator of the USS AROOSTOOK fAOG-143 and par- ticipated in the invasions of North Africa and Italy. In 1944 he was assigned to the USS SITKA QAPA-1132 as First Lieutenant and Damage Control Officer, and participated in Pacific Fleet Amphibious operations and the oc- cupation of Japan, and China. Successive tours of duty followed as Op- erations Officer and Navigator of USS VUL- CAN QAR-5lg temporary additional duty as Commanding Officer, USS MATTABESSET QAOG-563 operating in the Davis Straits and Greenland Watersg 5-term student at University of North Carolinag Operations Officer and Navigator of USS WARE QDD- 865lg Executive Officer of USS THE SUL- LIVANS QDD-53713 Navigation Instructor at NROTCU, Yale Universityg and Material and Task Group Watch Officer on the Staff of Commander, Destroyer Flotila TWO. Captain J OHNSON's next assignment was as Commanding Officer, USS BARRY QDD-9337 from 1958 to 1959. Following graduation in 1960 from the Naval War College Senior Course in Naval Warfare, he joined the Naval War College Staff and was assigned to the Strategic Planning Studies Branch of the Naval Warfare Department. While at the Naval War College he participated in an off-duty study program which led to the award of an MA Degree in Political Sci- ence from Boston University. In 1962 Captain JoHNsoN a S Su me d com-S mand of the USS MAHAM QDLG-113 com- pleting 14 months duty in WESTPAC While conducting extensive evaluation of the Naval Tactical Data System fNTDSJi as part of an NTDS AWW task force. From 1964 until 1966 he served in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of De- fense for International Security Affairs as the Professional Assistant for Greece, Tur- key, Cyprus and CENTO affairs. For his performance in the latter duty he was award- ed the Joint Service Commendation Medal by the Secretary of Defense. I-Ie assumed command of the USS ARCADIA CAD-233 in 1966, and served in that capacity through February 1968. On 4 April 1968 he assumed his present assignment as Commanding Officer, USS WAINWRIGHT QDLG-283.
