' ax , X. xm - 1 5 ffl-if ? pa The prime responsibility of the Medical Department in the traditional phrase of the Medical Corps is to keep as many men at as many guns as many days as possib1e. To implement this policy an active program of both medical aid and preventive medicine is carried out. Sick call is held at 0800 and 1300 daily. Emergency aid is available at all times, day or night. Preventive medicine that is done aboard h. preparation facilities and food. The berthing spaces are inspected weekly to insure the highest standards of sanitation and main- tenance. First aid lectures aresgiven daily so the crew can, in the event of battle or disaster, begin to aid themselves until medical assistance is on the scene. Berklite, is comprised of A, B, E, M, and R Divisions, and includes approximately one third of the crew. The scope of its tasks include operation, care and maintenance of the ship's main p r o pu l s i o n plant, auxiliary machinery, and piping systems, control of damageg operation and maintenance of elec- trical power generators and distribution sys- tems, repairs for the ship's hullg and repairs to equipment of other departments within the scope of the Engineering department. Under the supervision of the damage control assistant, LT W.J. Payne, and of the Main Propulsion Assistant, LTJG P.A. Tummonds, and due to a consistent effort by all hands, WAINWRIGHT's Engineering Department was judged as the outstanding Engineering Depart- ment in Destroyer Squadron 6 and was awarded the second Engineering Excellency award for l968.
