In size the Ops. Department is second only to the Weapons Department. Operations, by dictionary terminology, means: A course or series of acts to effectacertain purposeg to manage ' or conduct the affairs of, the state of being in action. This is a most apt definition for a shipboard Ops Department. The prime objective of Ops is to communicate and main- tain combat readiness. Itis within the realm of this depart- ment that a Blip or an image on a radar scope is deter- mined as being friend or foe, and what action to take, if action is required. It is also the responsibility of Ops to maintain constant contact with the outside world, without ,W . , it ao. , ce S SC tb ' which the ship would meander helplessly on the sea. Much highly sophisticated electronic equipment is utilized by this departmentg from computorized radar components to aid in analyzing a contact, to programmed transmitters that set up instantly at the touch ofa button. Such gear re- quires constant attention by highly skilled persons in the field of electronics. These men hold preventitive mainten- ance on the gear, and must also be able to trace out any malfunctions and repair same with minimum amount of time. In addition to functioning is the tactical department for war, peace, and emergency situations, ithas the responsi- bility of maintaining mail service, command liaison through the ship's office, and other duties that enhance and support the mission and functions of Operations. f ef' i orlfxsi' X KYX ' ' ' Hai 6 -5 1 ' - N , ,Q-I ,af .,, gp, ,, ,,., , -M, ,ml-, IW, V, , dam' . .1 ,,1:..,.,gf, fjnlvg. 1 .W , , A Q D ' C. But one de- partment has as its primary function, support and welfare of the entire ship. This heavy burden falls on the unsung heroes ofthe Supply Department, consisting ofS Division and CS Division. S Division is comprised of Storekeepers, Ship Servicemen and Disbursing clerks. The Storekeeper has the never-ending job of keeping plenty of spare parts on board for all of WAINWRIGHTS sophisticated warfare gear. Where- as the Ship Servicemen find they must take care of and meet all the personalrequirements of each crew member, such as hair cuts, laundryg or purchases from the Ship's Store. And of course, every man must be paid, and twice a month, the friendly Disbursing clerk finds that he is the main attraction that day as each man accepts his green- backs . In order for a man to do his job properly, his stomach must be fed and this is the job of our Commissary- men and Stewards who make up CS Division. All of Supply Department works as a homogeneous unitin order. to achieve the self-satisfaction that he has given his best to his shipmates and to the WAINWRIGHT.
