WAINWRIGHT left Naples to transit up the Italian coast to Genoa, Where she spent the weekend and picked up another MTT team. She left Genoa for the eastern Meditter- anean to participate in Exercise Dis- play Determination with southern Nato forces. This exercise took WAINWRIGHT to the south coast of Turkey and the farthest point east during her deployment. During this exercise, she received a visit from two British MP's, who were given a red carpet tour of the ship. From the eastern Med, WAIN- WRIGHT began the long trip home, stopping again in Palma de Majorca on 20 October. Wainwright left the Mediter- ranean on 31 October, having met every commitment required of her. TOURING ROME - Many took advan- tage of Italian port calls to tour Rome, convenient to both Naples and Gaeta.

FIRST LIBERTY PORT - Wainwright rounds the bend into Gaeta, The USS Mac- Donough and USS Sellers also visited the town. Forrestal saw much underway time. The two ships did so much steaming together, that Forrestal began re- ferring to the two ships as the battle pair. At the beginning of August, WAINWRIGHT traveled to Mar- seilles, where tragedy struck the ship. STG3 Douglas Lundquist drowned in the waters off the Mar- seilles seawall. A memorial service was held for him on 15 August. WAINWRIGHT left Mar- seilles to participate in Exercise Seawind with Egyptian forces. This exercise took WAINWRIGHT to the eastern Med. A planned port vis- it to Haifa was cancelled and a visit to the Sicilian resort town of Toar- mina was scheduled for late August and early September. In Toarmina, the first MTT team boarded WAINWRIGHT to prepare her for an out-chop OPPE. CAPT. GEORGE A. HUCHTING COMMANDING OFFICER Capt. Huchting came to the WAINWRIGHT on 17 April 1985, relieving Capt. J .R. Dalrymple when the ship was winding up her 1984-85 Mediterranean deployment. He is due to be relieved in June, 1987. With his emphasis on doing things by the book, and his constant push- ing of himself and his subordinates toward the aggressive pursuit of ex- cellence, Capt. Huchting has made the USS WAINWRIGHT one of AND MANY MORE - MS1 Viado and FN Bimber cut the U.S. Navy birthday cake as the CO steadies it. DUST, JIM - Capt. Huchting tours a pas- sageway with the Supply Officer prior to a complete paint out. RE-UP - The CO reenlists STG2 Fruin in his cabin. Fruin reenlisted for shore duty orders. 8 the most professional ships in the U.S. Navy. TWO MORE OOD'S - The CO pins sur- face warfare pins on LT Holland and LT Callahan, two of nine new SWO's.
