Mcvo Y, USN COMMANDIN G OFFICER CRUISE BOOK REMARKS When WAINWRIGHT steamed under the Cooper River bridge and up the River to her berth in Charleston, the officers and men of this fine ship could chalk up yet another significant event on the long list that already existed. Only a little more than a year after experiencing the most comprehensive surface ship overhaul and modernization ever attempted at the Charleston Naval Shipyard, WAINWRIGHT had completed over eight months of operations in the Caribbean, Black and Mediterranean Seas, and the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. There is no such thing as a fine ship unless there is an equally fine crew to man her. Ships don't compile outstanding records, their crews do. Without the qualified and dedicated men to man , maintain, and fight her, the most capable and sophisticated ship in the Navy will never leave the pier. This then is another fine chapter in the life of a ship and you, her outstanding crew. She has steamed with the best, shot with the best, operated and communicated with the best, fed with the best and done all those things a first class combatant can do ifshe has a crew which include the best, and that best is the most important ofall, the officers and men who are the crew of WAINWRIGHT. It has been my distinct honor to serve with you during these past manyhmonths, an honor which I have never taken lightly and will remember always. Thank you and may God be with you in whateverthefuture may bring. ROBERT P. MCVO Y Captain, USN 5
