' . , I ', , L ig-,LM-fi'r '.i. f. lg ... ... , v T USS WAINWRIGH CG 2 USS WAINWRIGHT TCG-287 is a CG-26 class Guided Missile Cruiser and is the third ship in the Navy to bear the name. She is named after five distinguished naval officers from two WAINWRIGHT families. These officers served our country with valor during the years from the mid 19th Century until after the First World War. The primary mission of WAINWRIGHT is to provide anti-air and anti-submarine defense in a fast carrier task force. Secondary missions are to provide defense against surface ships and to conduct shore bombardment in support of amphibious operations. WAINWRIGHT was the first frigate to be built with an integrated weapons direction system that employs high speed general purpose digital computers of great reliability. This system processes data on targets of all kinds and feeds it to theTerrierl Standard Missile fire control and launching systems in order that missiles may be properly aimed and fired at any attacker, air or surface. WAINWRIGHT is equipped with a single, dual purpose, rapid-fire 5 !54 semi-automatic gun mount and two rapid-fire 3 l50 heavy machine gun mounts. These two systems provide additional defense against air and surface threats. The ship is also equipped with a long range sonar for locating and tracking submarines. WAINWRIGHT is 547 feet in length with a maximum beam of 55 feet and a draft of 28 feet. Although the ship, with a displacement of 7930 tons, is about the size of a World War ll cruiser, she has destroyer acceleration and maneuverability. BARTON IDD-7221 Captain ACKERMAN received his Masters Degree in Management at Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute In Am? During the Vietnam War he served as Engineering Officer, USS RANGER ICVA-611 and commanded USS GURKE IDD-7831. H of attending the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in 1970, he was assigned a Current Operations Officer on the sta ved Commander in Chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet. Prior to assignment as Commanding Officer of WAINWRIGHT, CGPTGIO ACKERMAN Ser as Deputy Director, Surface Warfare Division in the office of the Chief of Naval Operations. . . - the NUVY Captain ACKERMAN has been awarded two bronze star metals with combat V, the Meritorious Service Medal, Commendati on Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Naval Medal and the Korean and Vietnam Service Medals. He is married to the former Nancy Louise Smith of Troy, New York and they have a son, Steven.
