IN APPRECIATION One of the most impressive things about high school days is the teachers. Their devotion to their work and their willingness to make good citizens out of their students have made an impression of some kind on everyone of us. Mrs. Worrall, we feel is an excellent example of this dedicated teacher. She has served on the W.H.S. faculty for many years. Not even critical illness could keep her away very long. Therefore we most gratefully dedicate this 1965 Thunderbird to Mrs. Worrall, with the hope that she may have many successful years before her. ANNUAL STAFF EDITOR: ASS'T. The president of the council is chosen by the student body from the two senior representatives. This year Rob Schmer was chosen as president. The function of this group is to act as a medium between the faculty and the students and to discuss the various problems arising during the school year. The highlights of this year were sponsoring the Freshman Mixer and choosing the excellent convocations presented. CO UNTT GO VERNMENT LEFT TO RIGHT, FRONT ROW: J. Bronson, N. Ludi, D. Heineman, B. Through the co-operation of the staff, headed by Cynthia Ferrara and Judy Caha, the student body enjoys the editions which are published every other week. The staff includes editors, reporters, columnists, artists and headliners, students assigned to editorials, society reporters, Harry Lane, humorists, and senior interviewers. The staff always seems to be rewarded for their hard work when they see the student deeply engrossed in their paper. 48 LIBRART CLUB L. TO R. , FRONT ROW: B. Boyles, S. Beaman, R. Schmer, C. There were quite a few opportunities for those participating to show their talents. The newly organized Aksarben Conference Contest was held at Nebraska City, where Wahoo High won the sweepstake trophy. At the district Contest, held at Ralston, Wahoo placed second. This spring, everyone was shocked to find we had done better than ever at the Fine Arts Festival at the University of Nebraska by placing second. All in all, it has been an exceptional year and one most rewarding to all who participated. 51 DEB A TE L. to R.: Joe Voboril, Ed Erickson, Mike Haessler, Alois Proett This year several new courses were added to the curriculum. Among these new courses was debate. Out of those who took debate as a subject, two debate teams were formed. The teams traveled to many towns, some of which were quite a distance away, and involved giving up many a Saturday to debate the National topic, Resolved: That Nuclear Weapons Be Controlled by an International Organization. Being new at debating, the teams did remarkably well, ranking high in all debates and bringing home several trophies. 52 L. TO R., FRONT ROW: K. Roberts, K. Holthaus, R. Lillie, S. Roberts, L. The ways of the Spanish people were brought to life as the Spanish Club listened to Mrs. Dale Funk tell of her experiences to Columbia as a Peace Corps worker and her stay in Mexico as a part of the American Friends Service Committee. A dance at the high school was sponsored by the Spanish Club as a money-making project. As a service project, the Club spent many hours making health kits and play kits for immigrant children. A climax to the Club's activities for the year was a trip to the El Matadora cafe in Omaha in the spring. Here they enjoyed the Spanish atmosphere and Spanish food such as hot enchiladas, tacos, tortillas, chalupas, frijoles, arroz, ensaladas, temales, bur-ritos, and sopapias. 54 L. TO R., FRONT ROW: K. SCIENCE CLUB Highlighting this year's work was a visit to the Science Club by Dr. Theodore Jorgenson of the University of Nebraska. He spoke to several junior high and senior high science groups and the Science Club under the University's Visiting Scientists’ Program. Technical films were shown at other meetings covering some of the many elements of science. The Science Fair was held early in May with about 80 science projects exhibited by junior high and senior high students. Several senior high student members entered the Jr. Academy of Sciences Exhibit in Lincoln, early in May. Our local Science Club became affiliated with the National Future Scientists of America organization this year. Sec.-Treas. C. Manstedt, Pres. G. Woolman, V. Pres. J. Voboril, News Rep. S. Erickson. 55 SENIOR CLASS PLAT On April 30 and May 1, the seniors presented The Sound of Music, under the direction of Mr. Carlson and Mr. Becker. The setting is 1938, in Nonnberg Abbey in Austria. The Mother Abbess is forced to conclude that Maria is not yet ready for the religious life, so it is arranged for her to be governess to the children of Captain Georg Von Trapp. Maria teaches the children to enjoy life, and the Captain reluctantly joins them. Maria discovers her love for the Captain, and after a quarrel with his fiancee, he recognizes his love for her, and they are married. The balance of the plot deals with the family's escape into Switzerland over Maria's beloved mountain. L. TOR., FRONT ROW: C. Huey, S. Martens, L. Scheuneman, B. Wagner, L. Holtorf, L. Holstein, J. JUNIOR CLASS PLAT The Junior Class Play, under the direction of Mr. Charles Carlson, produced the hilarious satire, Teahouse of the August Moon, written by John Patrick. My job is to teach these natives the meaning of democracy, and they're going to learn democracy if I have to shoot everyone of them. When Colonel Wainwright Purday III is sent to Okanaw with an occupation unit after the war, he is determined to enlighten the islanders to the American Way of Life according to the pentagon rule book (Plan B, Section Four: Orienting the Oriental ). The Okanawans, however, - -wise to the civilizing ways of Chinese pirates, English missionaries, and Japanese war lords--prove not only enlightened, but enlightening. Poised at the center of this comic meeting of East and West is the interpreter, Sakini Acting as a kind of single-man chorus, he comments on the action, seems to sympathize with opposing views, and punctuates the dialogue with practical common sense. But he is a character, too--an amusing, benevolent opportunist who plays the fool AND fools the military bureaucracy. The Teahouse of the August Moon is one of the most successful comedies written in recent years. A Pulitizer Prize winner in 1954;'it played 1027 consecutive performances on Broadway and was made into a motion picture. 57 JUNIOR SENIOR BANQUET The Pirates' Lair provided an enchanting atmosphere for the Junior-Senior Banquet this year. A palm tree stood in the center of the room with a chest filled with gold dubloons and jewels. The black ship of the pirates sailed at the far end of the room. After the banquet we adjourned to the Annual Dance at the high school. Here we were greeted with a breath of spring. Blue lights accented the fountain in the center of the gym. In the far corner, a spring scene rested behind a bridge over which the Annual King and Queen candidates walked after the crowning ceremonies. IJNDERCLA SSMEN JUNIORS N. Ludi St. Council J.
