t IBMf I. xv5r'':v 1963 THUNDERBIRD - Wahoo High School is celebrating their Golden Anniversary. Fifty years ago the doors opened for the first time for classes. Each year the games, dances, pep rallies, books, plays, music, and contests become the center about which all activity revolves. The freshmen are still green, sophomores are a little surer, juniors are more confident, and seniors are mightier. To our school, Wahoo High, and to all the great times we've had here, and the friends we've made, we dedicate this 1963 Thunderbird. Wahoo had the most successful season yet. The Warriors ended the season with an 8-0-1 record, being the only team in Wahoo's history to go undefeated. The blockbusting Warriors won the Platte Valley Conference championship and ended up second in the Omaha World Herald's ratings. This was accomplished only by the untiring efforts of coach Dennis Korinek and his assistants Ray Lanik and Burl Graff, as well as the hard work by the Warriors and spirit shown by the school. These backs and kickers gained valuable points for the mighty Wahoo team: Dick Liliedahl, Roger Liliedahl, Roy Anderson, Larry Grasmick, Ron Treptow, Rick Copperstone, and Steve Shea. For the second year in a row, the W Club sponsored a football luncheon for the Booster Club and merchants who purchased pictures of individual players. Motion picture films of all of Wahoo's home games were shown as part of the program. The W Club payed for part of the insurance expenses for each boy participating in sports, using money earned by selling popcorn at sports activities. Though the number of games won was five this number could have been doubled with just a few seconds or points to our favor. Fate let the boys down more than once but the Warriors always managed to build fighting spirit for the next game. Coach Lanik had more than his share of trouble this season but came through with a fine job of coaching. The band, under the direction of Mr. Becker, made many successful appearances. After long hours of practice the band competed in the Aksarben Marching Band Contest and received an excellent rating for the evening’s marching and playing performance. The same month, following Aksarben, the band went to the University of Nebraska’s Band Day in Lincoln. They marched in the parade in the morning and participated in the half-time show at the University's football game in the afternoon. In October, the band went to Grand Island to participate in the Harvest of Harmony. A Superior rating was received for the afternoon's marching and playing performance. The marching season was completed by receiving an excellent rating in the State Band Contest at Pershing Auditorium in Lincoln. The 1962-1963 concert band season proved to be an extremely gratifying one for the band. The concert band made its first appearance in December. The band participated in several other concerts throughout the school year. In the spring of the year, the band took part in the Class B District Music Contest which was held in Wahoo. 21 BRASS SEXTET Linda Dokulil Roy Anderson Arthur Kavan Liz Vybiral Louis Wotipka Jeanette Kuhr INSTRUMENTAL DRUM QUINTET Kent Schulz Mike Haessier Wayne Lantry Jo Ann Fleek Linda Larson GROUPS TRUMPET QUARTET Roy Anderson Linda Kratky Linda Dokulil Sherri Roberts 22 FLUTE TRIO Connie Keefer Cynthia Ferrara Janece Ludi MIXED CLARINET QUARTET Margo Johnston Laurel Sullivan DonNell Simmerman Paula Berg TROMBONE TRIO Rick Erickson Arthur Kavan Gus Larson 23 Connie MAJORETTES Jani Laurie 24 BACK ROW, Left to Right: A. The Junior Class, under the direction of Mr. Charles Carlson, produced the touching drama The Miracle Worker. The play was given November 29 and 30. The Miracle Worker is one of the truly great stories of the world. It is the actual life story of Helen Keller, who at nineteen months of age lost both sight and hearing; and of her teacher, Miss Annie Sullivan. Annie, herself, was blind and illiterate until her teens. Upon leaving the Perkins Institute, where she went to school, Annie is faced with the overwhelming task of teaching a deaf, blind, and mute child all that has been known and written by man. The climax of the story finds Helen realizing that the figures Annie makes in her hand are words, and that the words mean things. This three-act drama was written by William Gibson. 33 CHIEFTAIN STAFF BACK ROW, Left to Right: R. Copperstone, L. Kontos, D. Basel, M. Eliason, C. Berman, D. Renegar. THIRD ROW: R. Rockwell, S. Many excellent papers have come off the school press this year. The staff included editors, reporters, artists, columnists, and the office practice class. Everyone worked real hard to make each issue of the Chieftain better than the one before. Many long hours were put into the making of each edition and this was certainly noticeable in the finished product. The co-editors, probably the most responsible for this success, were Linda Kratky and Bonnie Miller. % Co-Editors: Linda Kratky Bonnie Miller 34 SCIENCE CLUB BACK ROW, Left to Right: K. Zimmerman, B. These students, by participating in the Science Club, are taking greater steps in furthering their knowledge in this field. The Science Club is sponsored by the Physics, Chemistry, and Science teacher, Mr. Hassman. The only requirements for membership are that you be interested in science, and that you make one or more scientific projects during the year. In the spring of the year the Science Club sponsors a science fair, displaying over fifty different scientific items on the gymnasium floor. The people of the community are invited to see these projects. The Science Club also sponsored other activities during the year, one of which was a convocation put on by General Motors. Everyone maintaining a 3.5 average over a two semester period receives a Scholastic Club pin with his initials engraved on the back. On a chain connected to the pin is an Indianhead with the year the pin was received on it. The pin winners should wear these pins with great pride because they are truly the result of diligent work. Sandstedt America - - Audience RECESSIONAL--Band I THE MUSIC MAN This year's Senior Class, along with Mr. Carlson, picked THE MUSIC MAN by Meredith Wilson for their class play. It was produced on April 4 and 5. In this explosive musical, Professor Harold Hill comes to the little town of River City in Iowa, and then the town starts jumping! The fast talking (and moving) Professor Hill sells band instruments to all the boys in River City. Of course, with the instruments, each boy must have a uniform. Now River City can have a Boys’ Band to compete with the troublesome pool hall. Just one thing stops the happy outcome of the play. Professor Harold Hill is a fraud. Not only is he unskilled in teaching the boys to play their instruments, but he never even planned to. He planned to pocket their money and skip town. Along came Miss Marian Paroo, the librarian, and poof, his plans went up in smoke. The band instruments do arrive and the boys are told by Harold that if they just think about the tune, the notes will come. This think system goes on for quite some time, too long for the parents who sank their money into this worthless idea. The townspeople realize they've been tricked and demand their money back. Just as they are about to do away with Professor Hill forever, a whistle is heard and in marches River City's Boys' Band. Miraculously, they start to play a song and save Harold from the terrible humiliation he had been going through. The girls wore sleeveless bloomer suits made out of blue or orange pineapple printed material. The girls' outfit was completed with grass skirts. They were Cynthia Ferrara, Jo Anne Fleek, Sherry Roberts, Janece Ludi, Helen Larsen, Leanne Gross, Mary Barsell, Sandy Beaman, and Linda Dokulil. The beachcombers Neil Keiser, Larry Kontos, Mike Haessler, Kent Schulz, Bob Schmer, Bill Kling, Roger Hoy, Tom Larsen, and Joey Hrdlicka wore shirts made from orange or blue pineapple printed material, white pants, sneakers, and straw hats decorated with an orchid and little palm tree. Following the banquet, the annual dance was held at the high school, where we donned twists and waltzes but not a single hula to the music of the Lee-Thomas Orchestra. IV SENIOR SNEAK TRIP On Wednesday, May 22nd, the Seniors left for Omaha at 7:30 for the annual Senior sneak trip. Arriving in Omaha a little before 9:00, they first visited the Union Pacific Railroad Museum. Then, they climbed back aboard the buses for a ride to Boys' Town where they had a guided tour and saw almost everything it was possible to see. Coming back from Boys' Town, the buses stopped at a MacDonald's Drive-In where everyone had lunch. Then, back to the buses, and downtown again, this time to take a tour of the World Herald Building. After this tour everyone had free time in which they could shop, see a show, or do anything they wanted. At 5:00 the seniors met at the Omaha Bus Terminal and rode out to the New Tower Restaurant for a delicious supper. The buses then took everyone back into town for whatever they wanted to do. Seniors invaded the downtown stores, Playland Park, and the Crooked Ear, a coffee house. Everyone met back at the buses at 11:00 P .M. for the ride home, tired but wishing it didn't have to end so soon. V SPEECH CONTEST BACK ROW: C. Berman, M. Jennings, L. Meese, R. Brodd, R.
