2 JAMES R. FILBRANDT IN MEMORIAM The 1962 Thunderbird is dedicated to Bonita J. Sherwood and James R. Filbrandt, whose lives were snuffed out on that cold, snowy night in March of 1961, like the light of a candle. Yet the memories of these two loyal classmates will burn as a thousand candles in the heart of all who knew them. Bonnie, a beautiful sixteen year old, was full of life and enthusiasm for all that she undertook. She was a friend and helper for any who needed one. Jim, known to all as Minnie, was a handsome young man. A star in his activities, especially in sports, where he excelled far above average. This invincible giant of the basketball court was as sincere a comrade to his friends as one could ask for. Much more could be written as to how the school and community miss the talents and qualities of these young people. But words cannot describe the empty spot in the hearts of the students of Wahoo High School. 3 THUNDERB1RD QllEEN KAREN CHVATAL ATTENDANTS THUNDERBIRD KING DAVE JOHNSON ATTENDANTS ANNUAL STAFF Editor: rJ L yri Assistant Editor: Business Managers: Directors of Layout: Director of Photography: Director of Write-up: Typists and Proof Readers: Sponsor: S LUtXAMy rr ytj QAAj (2 MQ nS UJoAfLZsyi Ijux CcUjlZ. Which seemed to provide them with what it takes to play a hard second half. 8 T. Scoring at the pace of 24 points per game this offensive unit was one of the most feared in the area. In 1961 the long hours of hard work and training paid off with the most successful season in many years for a Wahoo team. Dennis Korinek with the help of his assistants Ray Lanik, Glen Binfield, and Darrel Rosenquist piloted the Warriors to a six and three record. The Wahoo Club was ranked seventh in the Class B football teams until a surprising upset by Hooper knocked Wahoo from the ratings. Dick The Toe Liliedahl, one of the best place kickers in the area, was what we needed for the winning margin in the Seward game and others. 9 The defensive unit, small in size like the Biblical David, stopped many a Goliath on the football field. TACKLE TROPHY WINNERS--Bob and Rich shown with Mrpie and Mary Lynn. ALL-CONFERENCE WINNERS--STANDING, Rich Patton and Bob Chmelka. HONORABLE MENTION--KNEELING, Larry Grasmick and Dave Johnson. Valuable yardage was gained by the kicking toe of Roger Liliedahl in punting situations. 10 liddle Gimmie AIISHVA BASKETBALL BACK ROW, Left to Right: D. Johnson, C. Novy, R. Rockwell, J. The W Club came up with something new this fall, they sponsored a football luncheon for the Booster Club and the merchants who purchased pictures of individual players. This may very well be an annual event after such a successful inaugural program. This fall the members of the W Club purchased a plaque in memoriam of James R. Filbrandt. It will remain hanging in the study hall in memory of our dear friend and athlete. Perhaps you might wonder why the W Club always sells the popcorn at sports activities? They have been using the money earned by selling popcorn to pay for part of the insurance expenses for each boy participating in sports. All present members of the W Club have earned at least one letter in one of the three competitive sports. This past year they also enacted a new constitution which was voted on and accepted by the Board. W CLUB OFFICERS—Sec. -Treas.—Ray Swanson; Pres.--Richard Patton; V. The band competed in the Aksarben Marching Band Contest. After many hours of practice, they received the rating of excellent. In October they went to Grand Island to participate in the Harvest of Harmony. An excellent rating was given to them for the afternoon’s marching and playing performance. That same month they went to the University of Omaha's Band Day in Omaha. They marched in the parade in the morning and participated in the half-time show at the Omaha University football game in the afternoon. The season was completed by getting an excellent rating in the State Band Contest at Pershing Auditorium in Lincoln. The 1961-62 concert season proved to be an extremely gratifying one for the band. The concert band made its first appearance in December and participated in many concerts throughout the year. In the Spring of the year they took part in the Class B District Music Contest which was held in Wahoo. 23 HEAD MAJORETTE PERSHING HEAD MAJORETTE Karen Laurie 24 DANCE BAND y BACK ROW, Left to Right: R. On November 16 and 17, the Junior Class presented the three-act comedy, Dear Phoebe. The story is about a young professor who applies for a job at a newspaper and finds himself the writer of an advice-to-the-lovelorn column. He becomes infatuated with the cutest sportswriter in captivity, and then gets involved in a large basketball-fix and even a murder. Of course he eventually solves the mystery, wins the girl, and becomes editor, giving everything a happy ending. 33 SCIENCE CLUB BACK ROW, Left to Right: N. Manstedt, R. Copperstone, D. Gilliland, M. These students, by participating in the Science Club are taking greater steps in furthering their knowledge in this field. The Science Club is sponsored by the Physics and Chemistry teacher, Mr. Knox. Any student who is interested in science may be a member. The only requirement for membership is that you make one or more scientific projects during the year. In the spring of the year the Science Club sponsors a Science Fair, displaying over fifty different items on the gymnasium floor. The people of the community are invited to see these projects. When we speak of education we mean; the means by which a person's abilities and powers are developed in order that he may live more fully, having a sincere appreciation of the heritage of learning from the past and a compelling desire to apply his information in helping to solve the present day problems of the society of which he is a member. We of Wahoo feel that the scholastic ability of the students should be given an award, just as any other outstanding achievement is shown recognition. In order to earn a letter in the club, one must maintain a 3.5 average over a period of the second semester of one year and the first semester of the following year. These students are not only noted for their scholastic ability, but also for their participation in extracurricular activities about the school during the year. The students in the Library Club prepared bulletin displays for the study hall and were helpful as student librarians in the assembly. Variety is the word which makes the Wahoo High School paper, The Chieftain, a tremendous success. From all corners of the school, town, and state came the never ending variety of news, sports, and gossip which were put into print for the students of Wahoo High. Through the efforts of the staff, headed by Naomi Proett and Hope Taylor, the entire student body enjoyed receiving their issue every three weeks. The staff included editors, reporters, artists, columnists, and office practice class, mimeographing, and distributing. They worked hard trying to bring in the articles and news assigned to them. Although the staff worked hard and long, they felt doubly rewarded for their efforts and final results when they observed the students deeply engrossed in the school news, sports, jokes, and gossip in their Chieftains. 38 Co-Editors: Naomi Proett Hope Taylor 39 SOPHOMORES FRESHMAN CLASS Goo BACK ROW, Left to Right: Richard Duhrkop, Dennis Chemelka, Sam Grasmick, Betty Jo Boyles, Linda Erickson, Paula Berg, Cheryl Beranek, Sue Akins.
