1960-1961 T H U N D E R B I R D Future years--of what significance will they be to us, the graduating class of 1961, and the Senior classes to follow? To each of us these years will mean seeking out our purpose and goal in life--be it a teacher molding minds of the future, a scientist planning ahead for a better tomorrow, or a mother striving to see that her child is prepared to take his station in life. But in effect, whether we lead or follow, we shall always endeavor to pursue the footsteps of righteousness, wisdom, and knowledge. TACKLE TROPHY WINNERS The fact that a winning season is the most sought after objective of a football team, does not always hold true. Although everyone wants to win, there are other accomplishments which must be made also. When you have lifted a team's moral from low spirits to profound enthusiasm; made the boys see the immense value of sportsmanship; and have them understand that, the way you play the game is what counts, you have accomplished as much or even more than producing a winning record. The improvements made in this year's football team will prove to be the stepping stones to a better organized athletic program at Wahoo High. We appreciate the time and patience given up by coaches, Dennis Korinek and Ray Lanik, in bringing about these improvements. SENIORS BACK ROW, Left to Right: Bob Taylor, Larry Eads. This has been proved by the Wahoo High Band through its excellent records. After each contest in which they participated, the band was presented with either a superior or excellent rating. While at the Harvest of Harmony in Grand Island they received two trophies signifying the finest Class B Marching Band and best all around performance by any band. After the conclusion of the marching season the band did not remain idle. The school was filled with the sound of music from various performances presented by the concert band. SCHOLASTIC CLUB Education of the students is always the prime purpose of any high school. We of Wahoo feel that the scholastic ability of the students should be given an award, just as any other outstanding achievement is shown recognition. In order to earn a letter in the club, one must maintain a 3.5 average over a period of the second semester of one year, and the first semester of the following year. These students are not only noted for their scholastic ability, but also for their participation in extra-curricular activities about the school during the year. Wahoo is one of the first high schools in Nebraska to organize such a club, and the members of our school and the community are very proud to have such a fine example of what diligent learning and hard work can produce. 29 STANDING, Left to Right: M. SPANISH CLUB President—Jim Sanderson Vice-President—Julie Schmidt Secretary—Lyle Person (not pictured) Treasurer—Jean Larson Our world of today is composed of many different kinds and types of people, each speaking a language of their own. Through the study of ones language we are able to discover a great deal about his life, customs, and ideas. Spanish festivities were observed throughout the year. The Spanish Club sponsored a masquerade party and dance and during Christmas time, celebrated the breaking of the Pinata. In this way el Circulo de Espanol was able to further the understanding of people from other lands. I 30 Scientific progress has come to mean a great deal to us in the present time. This year at Wahoo High the prospective scientists of tomorrow have taken their first steps in preparing themselves for the complex world of the future. In an effort to guide them in the footsteps of positive learning the Science Club has contributed a growing sensitivity to the appreciation of the fact that natural and physical science abounds in our everyday environment. CHIEFTAIN STAFF From all corners of the school, town, and state came the never ending variety of news, sports, and gossip which were related to the students of Wahoo High. Through the efforts of the staff, headed by Lolly Handler and Dennie Strauss, the entire student body enjoyed receiving their monthly issues of the Chieftain. The staff worked feverishly, bringing in the articles assigned to them. The voice of the sponsor, Mr. Hawes, could be heard ringing in the ears of the staff with the familiar phrase, We must meet the deadline. Although the staff worked hard and long, they felt doubly rewarded for their efforts and final results when they observed the students deeply engrossed in their Chieftains. In the years to come, we sincerely hope that the Chieftain will further enrich the curriculum at Wahoo High as it has done in previous years. On behalf of the Chieftain staff we hope you have enjoyed this years publications. He came to Wahoo from Scottsdale, Arizona, accompanied by his family. Mr. Bones spent his childhood in Nebraska and received his undergraduate major in physics at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, and his MA at the State University of Iowa. Mr. Bones returned to the mid-west because he and his family felt that this was the part of the country they enjoy the most. The faculty and students of our school feel privileged to have Mr. Bones with us and we hope he will have a happy and successful experience at Wahoo High. SOUTH PACIFIC SOUTH PACIFIC Rogers and Hammerstein's popular musical was selected by Mr. Carlson and the SENIOR class for the spring production, April 27 and 28. The production takes place on a small tropic island in the South Pacific where American service men are stationed during the World War II. It has become extremely popular as the result of its long run on Broadway and also as a motion picture. In this play, the story of the South Pacific is told in various ways--through the eyes of a young American nurse who has never been away from home until she came to the South Pacific; in the ideas and ideals of a French planter exiled from his Mother Country; and through the uproarious, fun-loving life of the seabees. This is the story of South Pacific. The following cast was chosen for the leads: Gary Edgar as Emile D'Becque, a wealthy French planter; Connie Hoy and Lolly Handler, double cast as Nellie, the American Nurse; Pat Campbell as Bloody Mary, the Tonkinese woman; Marilyn Johnson is the daughter, Liat; Lanny Larson is Cable and Dennis Strauss is Billis, American servicemen stationed on the island. The entire class participated in the chorus, with the scenery, lighting or make up. II I'm gonna wash that man right outa my hair. 'Oh, aren't they adorable! Their trip took them to Kansas City to see two great shows--Spartacus and Exodus--then on to the Lake of The Ozarks for a very educational and entertaining stay. Here they attended such things as the Ozark Opera, a guided tour, dances at the lodge, boat rides, etc. Even though the Seniors didn't have planned tours for their complete trip, they all agreed that it was far more than just a pleasure trip.
