BAND The marching band of 1957 had an extremely busy season. Their first showing was made before school opened in the parade at the Saunders County Fair. The band’s second performance of the season was in Lincoln at the Fall Fashions Parade. The band marched nine blocks down O Street. The crowning achievement of the season was on September 25 when the band competed in the Ak-Sar-Ben Rodeo Band Contest. Preparation for this event was underway when school opened. Rehearsals were held from seven until nine every morning; and as the important day neared, several evening practices were also scheduled. The band received the superior rating one, the highest awarded in the competition. The band planned to participate in the Harvest of Harmony at Grand Island, but due to rainy weather and the heavy incidence of flu, they were unable to attend. Performances at the home football games were limited because of foul weather. Their one football trip was to Valley. The final performance of the marching band was made at the North Bend football game, November 13.. TW1RLERS, TOP ROW: Janis Colling. MIDDLE ROW: Bonnie Brown, Joan Leitgeb. Selections featured were 'Zampa' and 'Begin the Beguine.’ This performance was before a capacity crowd, and a second concert was planned for March. The 1957-58 concert season proved to be an extremely successful and gratifying endeavor for the band. The Band traveled to Central City on February 4 for a Band Clinic. In April, the Class B District Music Contest was held in Wahoo; and the band competed in it. Other Class B bands participated in these events. The Music Clinic was held at Wahoo this year under the very able direction of Dr. David Foltz from the University of Nebraska. Together with the Speech and English Literature classes, the groups presented a Christmas program for the faculty and student body. A concert was planned for the latter part of the school year. In April they competed in the Class B District Music Contest in Wahoo. This year Bob Krumel, base; Don Mays, tenor; Arlene Brodd and Julie Ecklund, sopranos, were chosen to attend the State Music Clinic at Lincoln. The 500 voice choir in which they sang was an inspiration to hear. PEP CLUB The fifty-eight members of the Wahoo High School Pep Club proved themselves the most enthusiastic group ever. Immediately, the following officers were elected: Margaret Kudma, President; Suzanne Parnell, Vice-President; Carol Vybiral, Secretary; and Dorothy Proett, Treasurer. Mr. Hawes, the high school commercial teacher, was chosen as the Pep Club Sponsor. The club was led by a governing body consisting of the Officers, Cheerleaders, our Sponsor, and elected representatives from each class. They were: Sandra Benson, Senior; Joan Leitgeb, Junior; Jeannette Eads, Sophomore; and Linda Pearson, Freshman. This group enforced the rules and regulations of the club. It was decided to have a demerit system in order to democratically discipline the membership. Each member was allowed three demerits and upon acquiring the fourth was to be dismissed from Pep Club. Fifth-eight copies of the Club's Constitution were printed and given to each member to take home. They were to be read by the parent and if approved, signed and returned to the Secretary to keep on file. PEP CLUB COUNCIL: TOP ROW, Left to Right: Mr. Hawes, Beverly Loukota, Mary Jane Patton. A CHALLENGE IS MET Wahoo High School’s partial answer to the Soviet Union's regimented scientific education comes in the form of a voluntary group of scientifically curious students who devote much free time in order to satisfy their intrinsically motivated scientific egos. Individual members participate in selected projects which challenge their abilities and reward their efforts. The officers for the 1957-58 school year were: John Harris, President: Frank Vybiral, Vice-President; Eugene Franta, Secretary. The sponsor of the club is Lowell Meyer, the physics and chemistry instructor. Projects undertaken by the various members this year are as follows: Allan Kanouff, a model of a nuclear reactor; William Justsen, a jet engine and rocket; Robert Justsen, a radio controlled boat; Charles Ell and Lannie Larson, a rabbit skeleton; Harley Wiedeman and Gary Edgar, an electric board map of the United States; Robert Aim and Ronald Anderson, a one tube radio; Laurel Handler and Rose Ann Cribbett, a Christmas tree dress; Gus Palmer, an airplane picture display; William Brown, an incubator and series in the development of chicken embryos; Dennis Strauss, an electric motor; and, Robert Krumel, an ignition system of an automobile. 54 LIBRARY CLUB SEATED, Left to Right: William Brown, Alice Bouc, Leona Coufal, Frank Vybiral, Richard Vybiral, Loma Peglow, Jean Dokulil, Rose Marie Lapour. END THE OLD YEAR WITH A I The Library Club, a new organization at Wahoo High School, was formed by student librarians. The club's activities included the making of bulletin board displays and working as assistant librarians. Social activities were a hayrack ride and a weiner roast. The officers are: President, Frank Vybiral; Vice-President, Phylis Lee; and Secretary-Treasurer, Lorna Peglow. The Student Council has been the governing body of the school for two years. Problems of the high school teen-agers were the topics that took up most of their time. They also sponsored two dances, the Freshman Mixer and the Valentine Hop. A pen machine was installed in the Study Hall for the convenience of the students. Jerry Dickinson was elected President of the Council with Joan Leitgeb as Vice-President and Sandra Benson Secretary-Treasurer.
