Music Department The music department was directed by Mr. Hoffman and Mrs. Zetterman during the school year of 1948-1949. This was a change since formerly only one instructor was employed. Mr. Hoffman, who came from Dodge City, Kansas, was in charge of the instrumental groups. Mrs. Zetterman, who previously taught in Grand Island, directed the vocal groups. The band was inactive during the first few weeks of the school year due to the absence of an instructor. When Mr. Hoffman arrived the fifty-one piece band practiced diligently and was able to compete in the Ak-Sar-Ben Marching Band Contest. However, it was defeated by Harlan, Iowa. The band also performed for the dedication of the Veterans Memorial, political rallies, Memorial Day parade and at football games. The annual concert in conjunction with the orchestra was presented March 31. The officers elected by the band were: Jeanne Anderson, student director; Susan Schiefelbein, uniform custodian; Jean Martinson, librarian; Frank Dol-ezal, band manager; and Jackie Margrave, secretary-treasurer. The thirty-eight piece orchestra which was composed of both grade school and high school students played for the junior class play in addition to giving a concert. Officers chosen were: Nelda Vogler, student director; Jackie Margrave, Jeanne Anderson, librarians; Marvelle Clark, secretary-treasurer. The pep band, made up of twelve band members and directed by Jeamie Anderson, helped make the basketball games and rallies lively and noisy. It also traveled to some out-of-town games to encourage the team and to aid the loyal Wahoo supporters. Mr. Hoffman devoted much time to small group work during the year. These groups included the string quartet, brass sextet, woodwind quintet, clarinet quartet, mixed clarinet quartet, and flute trio. On numerous occasions they provided entertainment for local organizations and school assemblies. The vocal department which consisted of the mixed chorus, boys’ glee club and girls’ glee clubs made several changes under the direction of Mrs. Zetterman. The girls’ glee club was divided into two groups; girls glee A was composed of thirty-three, and girls’ glee B of thirty-four willing vocalists. The accompanists for the large groups were: Grace Masek, Marvelle Clark, Mary Ann YYorrall and Nelda Vogler. Small group work was also important in the vocal department. These small groups were: the boys’ octette, girls’ small group, the Vrana trio, and the Virgl duo. They entertained several organizations and also performed in school assemblies. Instead of the usual concert the vocal department presented “The Georgia Jubilee Minstrel”. All the large and small groups participated in that production. Wahoo High School was well represented at the annual music clinic which was held in November at Omaha. Members of the chorus were: Jo Ann Young, Joyce Kuhr. Jean Virgl and Joan Virgl. Janet Kokjer and Mary Lea McMahon were members of the clinic band, and Jeannine Gregg and Nelda Vogler were in the orchestra. Several Wahoo groups and soloists entered the district music contest at Fremont and were ver}r successful.
