Hamming after the show The ’ Dixie Girl Parade “Georgia Jubilee Minstrel” was presented by members of the vocal groups of Wahoo High School under the direction of Mrs. Val Zetterman. Varied selections and solo numbers were given by the girls' glee clubs, the mixed chorus, girls' duo, boys’ octette, girls' trio and girls’ octette. Seven boys supplied the humorous speaking parts, which offered variety with the songs. The girls groups in colorful formals paraded to the tune of “Dixie Girl” while the boys' glee club sang. Characters in typical minstrel costume performed several stunts, including the well-known “snooting of the apple”, while the “Wm. Tell selection was sung. The lines by the boys in “black-face” were kept moving with the help of the interlocutor. Semiclassical and the better popular songs were furnished by all the vocalists with piano accompaniment and drum and cymbal color. Student Forum , . i y |yCC MdnG Left to right: Jerry Peterson, Elizabeth Greeley, Mary Lee Lud . Carol Saba a, nson, Keith Tomsicek. Don Morin, Chairman; Mr. Aronson, Sponsor: Patricia Gleeson, Burton Treptow, John Whaley, Barbara Johnson. At the beginning of the year, the forum sponsored a dance both to renew old acquaintances and to enable everyone to meet the freshmen. At Hallowe’en time, a masquerade dance was held. The costumes were either weird, beautiful, or funny. The third dance of the year was just before Christmas vacation. During the spring season, the main event was the annual spring dance, at which time a King and Queen of Spring were crowned. Several other social affairs rounded out the season. Chieftain Standing, left to right: Warren Sohl, Ruth Anderson, Janet Kok;er, Grace Masek, Georgia Rac Halliburton, Shirley McNeeley, John Whaley, Miss Doty, Miss Arnold, Mary Ann Worrall, Nelda Vogler, Marianne Sabatka, Mary Ann Vachal. Whenever the last sheet of the Chieftain “rolled off the press” to he stapled for distribution, the entire staff heaved an audible sigh of relief; for to them, those sheets symbolized the labor of several weeks of after-school hours. The feature writers, class reporters and sports writers once more lived without fear of missing the deadline. Their imaginations at rest, the cartoonists and headliners enjoyed themselves. For the industrious Miss Doty, her typists, and mimeographers a rest cure was then in order. The subscription and exchange editors were then ready to act and rushed from class to class instead of tracing missing subscribers all over the building. Miss Arnold and the editor, having successfully published an issue, immediately started planning the next edition, which would always elaborate upon some new theme. True indeed was the saying “Your time was Chieftain time’—once you were a staff member! Music Department The music department was directed by Mr. Hoffman and Mrs. Zetterman during the school year of 1948-1949. This was a change since formerly only one instructor was employed. Mr. Hoffman, who came from Dodge City, Kansas, was in charge of the instrumental groups. Mrs. Zetterman, who previously taught in Grand Island, directed the vocal groups. The band was inactive during the first few weeks of the school year due to the absence of an instructor. When Mr. Hoffman arrived the fifty-one piece band practiced diligently and was able to compete in the Ak-Sar-Ben Marching Band Contest. However, it was defeated by Harlan, Iowa. The band also performed for the dedication of the Veterans Memorial, political rallies, Memorial Day parade and at football games. The annual concert in conjunction with the orchestra was presented March 31. The officers elected by the band were: Jeanne Anderson, student director; Susan Schiefelbein, uniform custodian; Jean Martinson, librarian; Frank Dol-ezal, band manager; and Jackie Margrave, secretary-treasurer. The thirty-eight piece orchestra which was composed of both grade school and high school students played for the junior class play in addition to giving a concert. Officers chosen were: Nelda Vogler, student director; Jackie Margrave, Jeanne Anderson, librarians; Marvelle Clark, secretary-treasurer. The pep band, made up of twelve band members and directed by Jeamie Anderson, helped make the basketball games and rallies lively and noisy. It also traveled to some out-of-town games to encourage the team and to aid the loyal Wahoo supporters. Mr. Hoffman devoted much time to small group work during the year. These groups included the string quartet, brass sextet, woodwind quintet, clarinet quartet, mixed clarinet quartet, and flute trio. On numerous occasions they provided entertainment for local organizations and school assemblies. The vocal department which consisted of the mixed chorus, boys’ glee club and girls’ glee clubs made several changes under the direction of Mrs. Zetterman. The girls’ glee club was divided into two groups; girls glee A was composed of thirty-three, and girls’ glee B of thirty-four willing vocalists. The accompanists for the large groups were: Grace Masek, Marvelle Clark, Mary Ann YYorrall and Nelda Vogler. Small group work was also important in the vocal department. These small groups were: the boys’ octette, girls’ small group, the Vrana trio, and the Virgl duo. They entertained several organizations and also performed in school assemblies. Instead of the usual concert the vocal department presented “The Georgia Jubilee Minstrel”. All the large and small groups participated in that production. Wahoo High School was well represented at the annual music clinic which was held in November at Omaha. Members of the chorus were: Jo Ann Young, Joyce Kuhr. Jean Virgl and Joan Virgl. Janet Kokjer and Mary Lea McMahon were members of the clinic band, and Jeannine Gregg and Nelda Vogler were in the orchestra. Several Wahoo groups and soloists entered the district music contest at Fremont and were ver}r successful. Band Twirlers: Donna Lou Peteis Mary Ludi, Marjorie Rood, Janet Kokjer. The rhythmic music of Johnny Cox added to the romantic atmosphere of the Gypsyland setting. The guests entered through a covered wagon doorway and were received by five sophomore boys and girls in brilliant gypsy costumes. The main room was decorated with colorful gypsy lanterns, pom-poms, candlelighted tables, and Spanish tapestries. The ceiling was hung with bright-colored festoons, and a revolving ceiling light shed multi-colored rays on the scene. A gypsy campfire scene arranged before a back-drop, which was painted by Mr. Joe L. Pallat, completed the effect of coming suddenly into Gypsyland. It contained a covered wagon, a gknving campfire with a huge iron kettle, a drowsing gypsy and other typical array. During the evening punch was served from a real iron kettle by sophomore waiters and waitresses who were: Jackie Margrave, Patricia Gleeson, Dolores Striggow, Phyllis Dickinson, Carolyn Bern, Joe Koch, Louis Stava, Bill Lindley, Wayne Dvorak, and Merle Meyers. The guests were entertained for a short while by a group of dancers from Fremont. Immediately before refreshments were served everyone participated in a grand march. This group created a lovely and impressive scene as they paraded around the floor. Their leaders were the senior class president, Jack Stewart, junior class president, Don Morin, and their partners. The lunch was in harmony with the gypsy theme, and each person received a fortune and a good-luck ring. Small wooden caldrons with “48” on them were given as favors. The music and dancing, the exquisite atmosphere, and the romantic setting all enhanced the excitement and thrill of the occasion. The evening added another milestone to the sometimes long, sometimes short, road of high school life. Physical Education Cheerleaders Left to right: Dolores Maly, Jean Jackson, Phyllis Dickinson, George Rae Halliburton, Lois Patricia Russell. Physical education classes, which were required of all students, met two or three times each week under the supervision of Miss Jones and Mr. Menke. Boys were given instructions in basketball, volleyball, track, tumbling, and calisthenics. Girls were tutored in basketball, square dancing, volleyball, calisthenics, tumbling, and habits in good grooming. The year of ’49 marked the beginning of required physical education for girls. i Att Twirlers Left to right: Donna Lou Peters, Mary Ludi, Marjorie Rood, Janet Kokjer. The Pep Club sponsored a picnic early in the fall in honor of their newly elected sponsor and thirty-one new members. The club had the required number of fifty members. By a majority vote, it was decided to wear Indian-head emblems and last year’s sweater and skirt combination of blue and gold, the traditional school colors. To start off the season, a customary snake dance was held for the first game, which was with Seward. A small pep band furnished the music and a large student body was led in yells by the cheerleaders at each intersection of the business district. The team captain was crowned with an Indian headdress, and the line of rooters paraded through the various business establishments. P. S.—We lost! A Victory dance, at which Don Morin was crowned King of Sports and Elizabeth Greeley, Queen of Pep, was sponsored by the Pep Club and W Club. This was the thrilling climax of the football season. The vice-president appointed several members to arrange a skit for each home game. Themes of various natures, ranging from girls playing football to a quiz program, were exemplified. The officers for 1948-1949 were: president. Jean Martinson; vice-president, Jackie Margrave: secretary-treasurer, Mary Ann Haba; forum member, Elizabeth Greeley; sponsor, Miss Jones. Each page in some way represents four years of learning. In addition to knowledge from books, we have gained deep friendships and ability to appreciate our many associates. “The intellectual attainments of a man who thinks for himself resembles a fine painting where the light and shade are correct, the tone sustained, the color perfectly harmonized; it is true to life.” Jo Ann Young CONGRATULATIONS and BEST WISHES To The CLASS OF 1949 ANDERSON AUTO CO. since 1913 Buick-Pontiac-Ghevrolet 36 Years in Business WISHING YOU THE BEST OF LUCK MODERN CLEANERS CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CLASS OF 1949 WAHOO NEWSPAPERS More News-More Ads-More Readers Wear Clean Clothes 127 West 6th Phone 102 Wahoo, Nebraska MAX'S DRUG STORE GAMBLES CONGRATULATIONS CLASS The Biggest Little Store OF 1949!
