COMMANDER DESTROYER SQUADRON THIRTEEN CAPTAIN STEVEN C. SAULNIER, UNITED STATES NAVY Captain Steven C. Saulnier. a native of Washington. D. C.. graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy in 1964. His operational tours include service aboard cruisers, destroyers, submarines, aircraft carriers, and in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Saulnier's initial tour of duty aboard USSIREX (SS-482), the Navy's first snorkel submarine, included assignments as Assistant Engineer. Supply Officer, and Weapons Officer and designation as Qualified in Submarines. In 1966 he began postgraduate studies at Stanford University. earning Master of Science degrees in Operations Research and Industrial Engineering. Upon completion of graduate study he reported to USS FOX (CG-33), serving as Damage Control Assistant. Electrical Officer and Navigator. Departing FOX in 1969. Captain Saulnier reported as Senior Advisor to River Assault and Interdiction Division Seventy One and River Interdiction Division Forty Four in the Republic of Vietnam. During the following year he participated in riverine operations, including Giant Slingshot. Sea Float, and Solid Anchor in the Mekong Delta and Ca Mau Peninsula. After graduating from Destroyer School in 1971, he completed three successive tours in Destroyer Squadron FIFTEEN, Yokosuka. Japan as Operations Officer of USS PARSONS (DDG-33), Squadron Operations Officer, and Executive Officer of USS GURKE (DD-783) over the next four years. Tonkin Gulf operations predominated during the first half of this period while the forming of Battle Group ALFA around the newly deployed USS MIDWAY (CV-41) provided operational focus to the second. Upon graduation from Armed Forces Staff College in 1976. Captain Saulnier completed a joint tour in the Office of the Secretary of Defense as a resource analyst involved in planning, programming, budgeting, and weapons system acquisition decisions. In 1980 he commissioned USS FLETCHER (DD-992) as Commanding Officer and deployed with her to the Western Pacific in 1982. where she operated as a member of the MIDWAY Battle Group and flagship for Commander Destroyer Squadron FIFTEEN. Assignment as Surface Operations Officer of Carrier Group ONE followed FLETCHER with deployments or operations in CORAL SEA (CV-43), CARL VINSON (CVN-70), MIDWAY (CV-41). and CONSTELLATION (CV-64) highlighting the tour. Shore tours immediately preceding his current assignment to Destroyer Squadron THIRTEEN included duty as an instructor in Battle Group tactics at Tactical Training Group Pacific and as Head of Congressional Policy and Coordination in the Planning and Programming Directorate of the OPNAV staff. Captain Saulnier wears the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Bronze Star Medal with Combat V , the Meritorious Service Medal with two gold stars, the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat V . the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Bronze Star, the Combat Action Ribbon and various other unit, service, and campaign awards. The son of the late Martha Kittrell Saulnier and the late Jean M. Saulnier. Captain Saulnier and his wife. Lucille, reside in Coronado, California. Mrs. Saulnier is a teacher and reading consultant who now works full time at home with their two children. Stephanie, age 5. and Michael, age 3. 4 J

COMMANDING OFFICER COMMANDER JAMES LENUS McCLANE, USN Commander James Lenus McClane. USN. graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1970. He then served on the USS RICHARD E. BYRD (DDG 23) as Missile Gunnery Assistant. Fire Control Officer, and Combat Information Center Officer. Upon completion of this initial sea tour, he attended the U. S. Naval Postgraduate School. Monterey. California, entering with the first group to attend the Weapons Systems Technology curriculum. After receiving a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering in 1976. he attended the Department Head course at Surface Warfare Officers School. Newport, Rhode Island. Commander McClane then reported to the USS BUCHANAN (DDG 14) as Weapons Officer. After selection as the commissioning Combat Systems Officer for the USS Tl-CONDEROGA (CG 47) in 1980. he participated in the first series of AEGIS training courses at Combat Systems Engineering Development Site. Moorestown. New Jersey. Commander McClane served onboard TICONDEROGA from pre-commissioning through her first deployment, which included participation in the Multi-National Peacekeeping Force off Beruit. Lebanon. He then served as Executive Officer on the USS BELKNAP (CG 26) until June 1986. He has commanded WADDELL since February 1987. Commander McClane s awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (with Gold Star) and the Navy Achievement Medal. Commander McClane is married to the former Carol Lynn Prodanovich of San Diego. They reside in San Diego with their sons. John and Michael. It's not over til it's over! Leading the way
