The fatal turn at Eighth Street led us to a large, an overwhelmingly large building. Wie boldly entered it, making an altogether Fierce and daring appearance. The first floor, which met our gaze as we entered, looked very fresh and green. It was fairly sprouting with Slimes- innocent faced Slimes, as yet not initiated into the mysterious ways of High School life. This, we learned, was Slimedom. Thinking that this new prospect would furnish us the thrills that we craved, we promptly entered our names on the long list of adventure. lt seemed to us inevitable that personages of our distinction and worldly wisdom would join one of the upper tribes such as the Sopho- mores, juniors, or Seniors. But our high hopes were dashed to earth when we were kindly informed that all green young things belong in Slimedom. They also told us that we would possess a little sophisti- cation, maybe even be normal at the end of our conquest. This bare- faced insult and bold attack upon our intelligence caused our fighting blood to rise within us. Daring adventurers of our superiority to be thus ridiculedl Nevertheless we curbed our pride a little and with a will that would surely conquer entered Slimedom. The year's proceedings in Slimedom dealt our pride a severe blow, ln fact, the weaker members of our band dropped out, unable to endure the strenuous life of the Slime. Our entrance into the Sophomore Tribe was a grand and glorious triumph. With proud disdain we could now look down upon the poor unfortunates in Slimedoml The next advancement, which was to Juniors, took some of the swelling out of our heads and then our hats fit us better. We gradually began to realize that things were not what they seemed-that perhaps we didn't know as much as we had thought we did. And now we find ourselves in the last stage of the transformation- the last chance to become sophisticated. Some of us are as near normal as we will ever get to be, while others will become more so when they enter College, where they will undergo the same process of transforma- tion only to a greater extent. Anyway, we still have enough conceit left to agree that: Every day and in every way We are getting better and better.
