In an effort to build excitement and interest, events such as a tug-of-war, Hat Day, and Grub Day were sponsored by each grade. Royalty was once again an important event this year. Hundreds of people gathered in the gymnasium on Friday afternoon to witness the crowning of Mark Schumacher and Sheila Gales as king and queen. Deanne Bamum and Randy Zimmer returned to do the honors. The climax of the week came on Friday night. Keeping the slogan Cater the Raiders the Rabbits defeated Morgan by a score of 27-6. With the help of Catseye, a dance after the game provided a perfect closing to a memorable week. What did you think of Homecoming, as opposed to the previous year? Dick Cady- It was really nice; everything ran smoothly. The addition of royalty once again made it feel like the traditional Homecoming. There was no hassle or bad feedback as to which candidates were chosen as king and queen. Patty Macht-I was glad they decided to have homecoming royalty once again. Sheila Gales-I really liked it. It was real- ly fun! We had a lot more spirit this year with coronation. I think it gave the team more spirit. It was great in other words! 1. In a moment the curtains will rise upon the WHS drama departments production of Moliere's com- edy The Imaginary Invalid. But wait! Let us leave the curtains closed a while longer to linger yet on the moments leading up to this most magical of moments. There was the first read-through when those impossible French names tied the actor's whole body in knots•••the moments, hours, days, weeks of practice, practice, practice as the lines and blocking were indelibly printed on the actor's minds... the excitement as the props and set, piece by piece, conjured up a 17th century French sitting room with fireplace, railing,stair- way, and, oh yes, the canopy bed...and finally at dress rehearsal when the ac- tors, in full make-up and costume, knew they were no longer acting—they had be- come, in body and spirit, the characters of The Imaginary Invalid. But enough! The actors backstage are anxious. Master of the magic curtains, open and let the miracle that is theater begin. 1. Final performance. 2. Play practice?! 3. Makeup—much needed?! U. The juniors did a fantastic job in decorating the legion hall as a castle. The scene was set for a medieval night complete with a throne, draw- bridge, banner, swords, shields, and gray brick walls. Everything fit the bold theme perfectly, expecially the colors of red and silver. Prom banquet was held at St. Matthew s Church this year, a change which also contributed to the prom as being something different. Music was tuned into the action by a group from the cities called ,fMariah. Prom was very successful, and went smoothly. It will long be remembered as the different prom of 19771 1. Yet, all of them, after 12 years of education, could not avoid the thought of the twilight of the road up ahead. Hopefully, each of the 78 graduates will have taken with them 12 years of learning experiences, memories, hardships, good times, and as always, a few chosen friends. Our biggest project for the year was the making of a float for the homecoming parade and decorating the throne for the king and queen. We were pleased to be awarded the prize for ,rMost Humorous float with our Lick the Raiders entry. The eighth grade also sponsored the junior high dance on March 11. We decided to have the dress for this dance be informal ( grubbies ), and music was provided by records brought by students. A SENSE OF MATURITY SENIORS DISPLAY Hello, yes it s time to start Tpa.dirar the Rabbit Tracks again. Today I would like to speak to the senior class and say Yeah Team. The seniors, unlike most of those that have graduated and left this institution, have shown they can be intelligent people, not jealous or conceited. I’m speaking of homecoming corona- tion in particular. The senior class of TJ voted almost unani- mously for the tradition that the graduating class of 76 thought they had gotten rid of for good- Kings and Queens. I admit the 76 class had some reasons that could be considered. One, they stated, was-everybody hated whoever received the posi- tion of king and queen, maybe I should say just queen. Now that excuse by itself is one that I would consider only from fourth graders .... I’ve got to say not all of last year’s seniors thought this way but for a class too many did. To this year’s seniors, you ve not only shown you can be intelligent and non-jealous, both before and after, but you also brought back a tradition that should never have been in danger of being lost. THANK YOU!!!! HOME SWEET HOME This year our foreign exchange student is from Geneva, Switzer- land. Her name is Irene Buche and she homes with the Virgil Bruns family of Lucan. Irene says she enjoys Wabasso very much and she was not surprised at its size. Irene has one bro- ther. Her father is a banker. As usual, I kidded her about the food here and she definitely a- greed she has taken a turn for the wider side of life. She agrees that Americans eat many more sweets and that even though she was not used to it, she has taken on the habit. Her favorite class at WHS is her Student Teacher Aid with the handicapped children. She’s in- volved in GRA, Camera Club, Se- lect Choir, and basketball. She believes the weather is much colder here; and believe it or not, Wabasso has more snow than Geneva. Referring to the differences in school and education, she thinks teachers are more open here. Although she is not an avid fan of football, she really en- joyed Homecoming, which is some- thing new to her. 1. Irene Buche and her sister Sheila Bruns. - STUDENT TO TOUR EUROPE Mark Schumacher has been se- lected for a European tour. The National Headquarters of the American Youth Symphony and Cho- rus (AYSC) has announced that Mark Schumacher, son of the Don Schumachers, has been selected to participate in the 12th an- nual European concert tour of this internationally famous or- ganization. Instrumental and vocal stu- dents within the range of 15-21 axe chosen for membership in AYSC on the basis of their mus- cianship, citizenship, and char- acter. The membership of this group is considered a high honor. The AYSC will assemble at the Kennedy International Airport in New York City on June 25, 1977 for an orientation meeting before departing for a 3-week goodwill concert tour of Europe. A homecoming concert is planned in New York City upon their re- turn. Concerts will be performed in Scotland, England, the Nether- lands, Switzerland, Austria, and Germany. They will return to the U.S. on July 16. The youthful members of AYSC are often called America s finest ambassadors. MYSTERIOUS DISEASE GETS MUCH ATTENTION After the Wabasso Invitation- al on Saturday, several Olivia wrestlerp broke out in an impet- igo-type skin disease. All the wrestlers, cheerleaders, pompon girls, and anyone who came in contact with tne wrestling mats were checked by the school nurse on Monday. The symptoms may show up any time within the next ten days. The main symptom is a rash; and the common areas are the hair line, mouth and nose, underarms, and behind the knees. The school has taken precau- tionary measures and disinfected the wrestling mats, wrestlers' uniforms, and also the rooms where the Olivia wrestlers were on Saturday. The only way of getting the infection now is through personal contact with any student who has the infec- tion. The infection is very contag- ious, and anyone showing the a- bove symptoms should take care not to spread the rash to their family and friends. If anyone has any questions call the school nurse, Mrs. Sinclair, at 3k2- 511U. RISE-N-SHINE Sound On Sound is the name of the group that is often up before the sun. It consists of 21 people plus the drummer, Jay Maasch and director, Mr. Grue- bele. Their practices are usually scheduled on Tuesdays and Thurs- days of each week at 7:00 a.m. (yes, BEFORE school!). But when a concert is near—well, it's EVERY morning (yawn) if you can make it. It would be more con- venient for those who come from Vesta, Lucan, and Wanda to live in Wabasso because they have to get up even earlier—UGH! Sound On Sound will soon start Practicing for an hour show which they will perform for the students in March. They will also be giving the same, or similar, show to the students at Lamberton and Walnut Grove. BOYS’, GIRLS’ COUNTY On Tuesday, April 5 nine jun- iors from WHS participated in the twenty-third annual boys' and girls' county. The educational trip was to Redwood County Coun- cil. The program was designed to give students an insight into county government offices. Among the places visited on this outing were: the Redwood County jail, the sheriff's off- ice, the welfare department, the county health institute, and the county engineer's office. The legionnaires also staged a mock trial at the court house. The county commissioners allowed the students to sit in on their meet- ing. Lunch was served at the Amer- ican Legion Hall and a slide presentation was shown by John MacDougall, a juvenile probation officer. Students that participated from WHS were chosen at random, and those in attendence were: Sherri Fischer, Kathy Jensen, Nancy Daub, Lynn Salmela, Sandy Schaffran, Gerald Senger, John Lensing, Gary Rohlik, and Jim Salfer. For the most part, all involved thought the trip was worth taking and a good learn- ing experience. ONE-ACT PLAY Once Upon a Playground rated AAA+. Have you noticed the aroma of theatre lately or heaxd any laughter above the roar of Virgil's vacuum cleaner? Well, it's that time of year again, the One-Act Play Contest. As cast members worked hard at it, Director Mary Wetmore and Student Director Bill Kon- rardy cued, gave stage direc- tions, and advised. The theme song is Blood, Sweat, Tears. District contest will be held at Springfield on January 29 (tomorrow), and Region takes place at Redwood Falls. Good Luck, gals, and you too, Rich! NOW—ON TO HOLLYWOOD!!! BILL KONRARDY IS WHS PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLAR WINNER Students from the 12th grade currently attending a public or private secondary school in Minn- esota have been nominated by the principal from each school as candidates for the Presidential Scholars Program at the Univer- sity of Minnesota. Each school is invited to nominate one can- didate, except seniors classes numbering over 300 may have 2 nom- inees, and from those over 600, 3 may be sent. Nominees must also rank in the top of their senior class academically. A Presidential Scholars Com- mittee comprised of students, fa- culty, and ‘administrators have made the final selection. Bill Konrardy has been selected for this distinguished honor. Bill and his parents will be honored at a luncheon on Wednesday, May 1+th, at the Norths tar Ballroom on the St. Paul Campus. This year prom is on April 30th which happens to be a Saturday night. Like last year's class, this year the jun- iors are also having a banquet (which starts at 6:00 or 6:30 p.m.) the night of prom. The Grand March starts at 8:00 p.m. The junior class had a choice of five songs for their theme. From the five, they chose Nights in White Satin. The colors this year are red and silver. The junior class voted for waitresses and waiters on Feb. 17 From this voting they picked the fol- lowing for waitresses: Steph Engel, Marlene Samyn, Gina Schu- macher, and Kathy Thull. For waiters they chose: Jim Fischer, Jay Maasch, Jeff Schueller, and Mark Woelfel. WHAT WILL YOU REMEMBER AFTER GRADUATION? Ann-The food we had in physics. The collegiate style has the educational symbols, the class year ('78) and Wabasso High surrounding the stone. The crested style has a W in the middle of the stone, the graduation year, and the person's initials, full name, or personal signature engraved. This was the first class to get their rings early. 39 ATHLETICS VOLLEYBALL Spjke ’gm Bump-Set-Spike! This portion of the annual is dedicated to those exciting, unbelievable specimens of man- hood, our fearless wrestlers. Their determina- tion and skill was in evidence once again as they completed another successful season. To the innocent spectator on the street, be- coming a wrestler may appear to be an everyday task. Wrong, mooseface! Again I exclaim, wrong! One must be of sound mind and body, and be able to endure the excessive torture of continuous fasting and practice after practice consisting of wind sprints and fingertip pushups done at every imaginable angle. After days of this, the Rabbits must then enter the arena to battle op- ponents before hundreds of beady eyes, greedily awaiting a victory. Yes, the life of a grappler is arduous. For this reason, we now wish to express our appreci- ation to these dedicated men for the spirit and honor they have bestowed on our community. 47 1. Mr. Grossman: I thought the chance to have one in this area was great, but for the money part, we just broke even. I think the way the fans and wrestlepe acted was great. We will have an invitational again next year. Roger Price: It gave us tougher competition. It helped our team and we met some of the teams we 11 probably meet at region. Mark Schumacher: It was well organized. It was good competition. The food was delicious and bet- ter than the food at any other toura:unent. hynn Salmela: I think it was smoothly run. Every- one knew where to go. It was a good feeling when kids from other towns even commented on how well everything was going. I'm looking forward to next year; it's fun having one at your school. The team s overall record was 8-8. The girls have put forth a lot of hustle. And with five seniors leaving, the whole bench has a good shot at lining up a starting position on the 77-78 team. Everyone, for the most part, had a good time playing and is planning to come back next year. 1. What did you think of this season's girls' basketball team? Marlene Samyn: I think Wabasso is a tough de- fensive team; we have some height advantage and a lot of good hustle. We have played some tough teams such as Redwood Falls, and lost, but the defensive work was great! With more practice and support from our fans we have a good chance to win district. Sheila Bruns; I think this year's team has been the best I have ever had the opportunity to play with. Everybody gets along and puts forth their best effort in the game. This year the starters have been backed up with a very strong and ex- perienced bench that are capable of entering the game and keeping a lead or making one. I feel our toughest opponents in the playoffs will be Redwood Falls and Morton. I believe we axe capable of beating them if we can get everybody off crutches and back into shape. Wayne Kragh: Girls' basketball is great! The girls' basketball team although plagued with injuries have had a good season. They lost three close games in the last few seconds------ heartbreakers in girls' or boys' competition. The conference is much improved over last year and a lot of gals are good shooters and ball handlers. Our girls have a good chance to win some games in district playoffs. Make those two-points gals, that's the name of the game! BOYS' BASKETBALL g (J [3 [3 | 0 Bouncers Rabbits started the season looking great, taking the first five of their games by wide margins. The team was an inexperienced but hard- working one, consisting of only one of last year's starters. Jeff Schueller, a sophomore, and Brad Baune, a mere freshmen, worked their way up to starting positions and saw quite a bit of action throughout the season. An outstanding individual was senior Joel Samyn, who scored a career total of more than 1,000 points. He was chosen KNUJ player of the week and named to the all conference team along with Jon Thull, who received honorable mention. The team ended with a good showing in district playoffs and finished the season with a 13 and 10 record. Next year's Rabbits look forward to a promising season under the coaching of Leo Grossman, assisted by Lawrence Kallevig. Three juniors will be returning, including Jon Thull as the captain. Nick Fischer; We did good with the experience we had. Joel is a big loss-but I think we can make up for that. Jay Schoo; I didn't get to see Nick play as much as I wanted to. Glen Miller; We had fun!?! Shari Moore: I enjoyed cheering for them, and I think they did a pretty fine job this year. Bonnie Dolan: Super great! Kelly Martensen: They did exceptionally well. 54 What do you think of this year's baseball team? Sheila Fischer: They1re really good. They've got good hitting and pitching, and really get fired up. They're cute, and I especially like the games when they play another cute team. Art Guetter; We've been up and down all year, but with guys like Head, Wampum, Brooks, and Thurman on our team, how can you lose? Brad Baune: If Nose can get his knuckle ball to work, we can be good. Barry Hogen: If we don't have any errors and if the pitching holds out, maybe they can beat anyone • BASEBALL Play Ball Baseball for those who may wonder, is the sport that ranks high on the musical charts with its coun- terparts, hot dogs, apple pie, and Chevrolet. It has been a dream of many young boys to be able to rank with the illustrious heroes of this sport. This dream is now a reality for a group of dedicated men of WHS. In addition to these senior high girls, there we e many .junior high girls who had their own track program this year. It proved to be a good season as the girls worked hard to achieve the goals they set at the beginning of the season. They made good showings at the track meets and many old records were broken and new ones set. The boys track team has done very well this year, having tied and broken some of the school records. The boys performed up to their ability and were very competitive. The track team puts in many long hours of work a week, about seven hours of practice and an average of two meets a week. Mr. Johnson said, It has been a fun season; the boys worked hard and made it successful. . 1. Junior High Track Row 1: J. Goblirsch, B.Fennem, N.Schueller, J.Rohde. B.Klante. M.Wagner, R.Eis, J. Once again this year we had six great groups of cheerleaders who led the fans in their support for the football, basketball, and wrestling teams. These girls spent much time and energy on prac- ticing, making posters, and even making a supper for the players. They also had occasional fund raisers such as selling caramel apples and cup- cakes. You can bet that these girls will always think of something new to show their spirit. 4 1. Varsity Football Cheerleaders-S.Fischer, J. Pietrowski, K.Arends, C.Kragh, S.Moore, J.Werner. 2. POM PON Kickers The pom pon girls had a busy year performing in parades, at football games and then during a busy winter at wrestling meets and basketball games. They also performed for the basketball play-offs at Marshall. One of the bright spots of the year was Nadine Schoo's cartwheel in the middle of a routine. In addition to performing, the girls worked hard at fund raisers, trying to earn enough money to pay for the uniforms. Our choreographers this year were Ann Kramer, Paige Fennem, and Sandy Hoffmann. Our treasurer was Sandy Hoffmann, and the girls were advised by Joyce Kremer. 1. Pom Pon Captains-K.Goblirsch, S.Hoff- mann. 2. The student council will do all this for you, as well as providing lively discussion and enlight- ening activities for the entire student body. In the past year, the student council has given the student body the most celebrated annual event of homecoming, complete with king and queen, pa- rade, game, dance, and all-around thrills and en- joyment. They also sponsored a dance by the Blue Denim. People danced their hearts out and let their bodies move to the beat of the rock music. 1. Our illustrious ban- quet was once again held on Nov- ember 15, 1976 so as not to be in competition with the box office hit Gone With the Wind shown on television. There was an excellent speaker in the form of Sandy Ehlers, and the great Broadway musical team of What Four provided a wide range of entertainment. The other project came in the form of a movie for Halloween. With a conglomera- tion of fantastically, fanatically funny movies, the NHS proceeded to knock the audience dead with Laurel Hardy, The Pink Panther, and the Our Gang comedy kids. BAND Music Masters There is a saying which goes something on the order of Music soothes the savage beast. The concert and cadet bands of Wabasso, under the fine direction of Mr. Ken Wistrom, have done their best to test this theory on the natives. With calm courage and confident conviction our fearless band director will face the demanding crowds and lead the band through a jungle of music. Perhaps the citizens of the area are not sav- ages, but the concerts given by the concert and cadet bands are very relaxing and enjoyable. However, concerts are not the only activity in which the bands are involved. There is also the selling of candy to raise money for the many projects and activities which we have. Band is a great deal of hard work infiltrated with much laughter and fun. And it is one or- ganization which anyone who is involved in re- ceives the satisfaction of soothing the wild beast. I. CHORUS Sing a Song The warming-up, practicing, and last minute rushing are a familiar scene to the choir groups. Mr. Corwin Gruebele put forth a tremendous effort in directing the choir this year. Considering the great quantity of talent in the groups, this task was simplified. The choir groups include the junior high choir, girls choir, concert choir, and Sound on Sound. The concert choir and Sound on Sound performed at a lyceum for Wabasso, Morgan, Walnut Grove, and various other functions. They have given much pleasure to the public with their performances in concerts and contests. 1. Sound on.Sound'i-Row Is B.Konrardy, J.Thull, Director C.Gruebele, M.Schumacher, G.Miller. The members are responsible for taking pictures at concerts, banquets, sports events, tournaments, and during regular school days. Many of these pictures go to the newspapers, the Rabbit Tracks, and the annual. The Camera Club had a fund raiser during the FFA Sweetheart dance on Friday, March 25 Club members sold concessions and set up a jail at the dance. 1. ANNUAL STAFF The Rabbit Taking the joyous occasions, the victories and defeats, the humorous escapades, and record- ing them to form an eternal memory: that is the awesome task of the annual staff. Through the years this group has been given the duty of gather- ing every fragment of information for the year- book. The members of this staff are tested in sever- al areas. They can explore their journalistic and typing talents, their creativity in using varied designs for layouts, and their humor in thinking of witty headlines. One does not know the meaning of frustration until the need arises to think of eye-catching headlines for the num- erous events and organizations of our school! To many, the yearbook is just something to look at once or twice. To the editors, advisors, and staff, it is a source of pride and accomplish- ment. These people put in hundreds of hours of work that go unnoticed by many. To the readers who believe that developing a fine yearbook is a simple task, just glance around the comer at an annual staff meeting. Witness the confusion and havoc that sometimes reigns! 1. What should a person do if he has a deep-rooted asperation to become another Clark Kent, or if gender permits, a Lois Lane? What must one do to attract the eye of those in this teeming metropo- lis of Wabasso? The answer is quite elementary; join the illustrious staff of the Rabbit Tracks. There is no need to cringe as one follows the editor s every move as she slips her hand into her files and removes the thrilling assignment for the next edition. There is no doubt that it will be an action-packed adventure worthy of even the one and only Robert Berghs! We take this opportunity to joyously extend our gratitude to those fearless reporters who risk life and limb to capture news events as they happen and keep students and teach- ers informed. Boys experience the activity of the girls locker room after practice. Girls, enter the for- bidden world of the boys showers after the big game. Experience life and love(?) behind the scenes. BUS PATROL Convoy The people of America have lived through many wars; but none were quite so exasperating as the hostile combat which will occur on the bus ride home. The dull and sonorous drone of paper airplanes flying overhead; the often fatal bombs (in the form of orange peelings and rotten apple cores) which plummet from the air, suddenly exploding into millions of pieces of shrapnel which strike you in the face, and the sudden, shrill scream which motivates the chil- ling fingers of fear to rip across your back are all characteristic of the perpetual warfare which ravages the bus and driver until there is little more left than a pile of scrap iron and a bundle of nerves. There is, however, one remaining hope for the preservation of all machinery—and sanity! This hope lies, not in the Mounted Canadian Police, nor in the SWAT teams of America, but in the bus patrol. The bus patrol is a group of finely trained people who are able to handle any situation which crops up on the bus ride to or from school. These people do not believe in violence and use words of compassion, per- suasion, and occasionally intimidation to sub- due the native barbarians. However, if all else fails, the bus patrol resorts to the use of a highly effective weapon of war, the fist. Bus Patrol-Row 1: R.Prechel, S.Bruns, M.Gustaf- son, J.Rohlik. This year the FHA (Future Homemakers of America) has 1 7 members. The FHA has done some different activities this year such as attending Farmfest and serving at the wrest- ling invitational. Some of the activities were the same as past years. These included district and state conventions, carolling at the nursing home, workshops, and a trip to the Cities. The trip to the Cities in- cluded touring Gabbert1 s Furniture, attend- ing the Ice Follies, and shopping at South- dale. 1. FHA-Row 1: L.Deprez, K.Arends, S.Winter J.Estum C.Frank, J.Knott, J. FFA Down to Earth The Future Farmers of America is a very in- volved organization. It is involved with the com- munity, the school, and most importantly, the very people within the organization. Officers and other members will sometimes lose whole nights of sleep to their dedicated participation in various activ- ities, including the Officer and Greenhand Camp- outs, the State Convention, and preparation for the annual FFA Banquet. The FFA has provided ac- tivities, for the young and old alike in the form of a Clildren's Barnyard at the county fair and a Hand Corn Picking Contest which all who partici- pate in thoroughly en.joy. Other contributions of the FFA involve exercise, fun, and quite a few bruises which can be obtained through basketball games or roller skating parties. With regular meetings held in school, contest, and other ac- tivities throughout the year, the members of FFA manage to remain busy, gain large amounts of know- ledge and skill, and have a great deal of fun meeting and sharing. ONE-ACT PLAY Storytime What would your first reaction be to six girls with faded sweatshirts and grubby blue jeans roaming the halls and hollering such lines as Buster Brown, ask me again, and I'll knock you down or Fatty, fatty, two-by-four. At first you might wonder just where they came from and then where they should be locked up. The base- ball bats, corrective shoes, a curious George monkey, and painted noses would give you the impression that they were the local hit and run team. Upon further investigation you would soon discover the motive—the one-act play. Once Upon a Playground took the cast to subdistrict at Belview where they received an AAA+ star rating and to district where they tied with Sleepy Eye for runner-up. (Sanborn took first.) Props were used to represent a playground atmosphere, and I'm sure the cast will admit that it felt good to go back and relive some of those childhood memories, while forgetting the prob- lems of student life. Nobody argued with them. After all they were the ones carrying the bats. The cast worked long hours under the direction of Mrs. Mary Wetmore and student director Bill Konrardy. The cast included Kathy Davis, Paige Fennem, Chris and Teresa Pistulka, Vicki Klante, and Sheila Gales. The characters with the green noses, instead of the green thumbs, were por- trayed by Shelly Winter and Richard Alexander. 1. What a bummer! 2. One-Act Play cast-Row 1: P.Fennem, S.Gales, T.Pistulka.
