It seemed as if everyone took part in some activity which really made this Homecoming a fun, exciting, meaningful one. The week started out with the coronation of Dave Tentis as king and Val Graner as queen. The coronation is usually followed by a bonfire and then a trip to the football opponent’s town. However, this year we all listened to what the administrators said. When they said NO CARAVAN, we had no caravan. During the week many things went on that the student body participated in to make it a good one. The days of the week for Homecoming included “Pajama Day, Backwards Day, Sweatpants Day, Red and White Day, and Mix and Match Day.” One major event that takes place every year is the Powder Puff football game. This year the Senior Class of ’88 won. (Of course.) Friday afternoon we paraded down Main Street in Wabasha. Now that was fun!!! And that night we met the Cardinals on the football field. A big THANKS to our football team for winning the game against Lewiston. We never thought we would win! Rogue’s Gallery provided the entertainment Saturday night at the Homecoming dance. A-Squad Nets 26 Wins The 1987 VB squad enjoyed a very successful season. The girls progressed well throughout the season, strengthening and sharpening skills and offensive defensive strategies with each match. Losses resulted only from very close match ups with the ever powerful Three-Rivers opponents. WK represented the conference and their loyal fans very well in the District playoffs, advancing to the quarter final round to face the Stewartville Tigers who eventually advanced from the District and represented Region I at the state tournament. WK returns a strong nucleus next seaspn comprised of girls who received a great deal of playing experience during the 1987 season. Look for WK to once again field a powerful and competitive team in 1988. First Row: S. Gander, K. Metzler, S. Stark, S. Kreye, A. Lee Second Row: Coac K. Olson, L. Schuth, T. Passe, D. Mazure, A. Coach Chuck Karger said that the mass inexperience started to fade after that as the Indians won four of the next five games. The highlight of the season was a victory over the highflying Lewiston Cardinals. (Lewiston was undefeated and unscored upon in five games before the W-K game. The Indians dominated in a 28-22 win.) W-K, however, saw their playoff hopes go down the drain in a 6 to 8 loss to Chatfield in the final game of the season. The girls worked hard, achieved many individual and team goals and cooperated with teammates and coaches in a truly team effort” stated Ms. Olson when asked about the ’88 gymnastics season. Becky Rolbiecki joined the coaching staff and was a very welcomed addition to the program. Both “A” and “B” squad teams reached team record high scores in dual meet competition and the varsity team moved up to the sixth place finish in the regional standings. Captains of the 1987-88 squad were Carol Sobeck and Lisa Walton. Carol was selected by her teammates as the squad’s most valuable player, and Lisa received special recognition for establishing a new school record in the “All-Around” competition, setting a mark of 30.40 points. 1st Row: A. The highlights of the season were beating Lake City and placing 2nd in the Winona State Invitational Christmas Tourney. The district wins over Lewiston and 1 seeded Lake City were exciting ones and the loss to Chatfield in the quarter-finals was a close battle. One of the other memoriable items of the season was the bus ride back from Spring Valley and it’s “aired out discussion.” The girl’s showed a lot of improvement in their play, teamwork, and their confidence as the season progressed -- all things which returning players must build on to make next season a success. Taubel, Coach Chuck Karger It was a bit difficult to follow the 1987 track team, which set many school records and culminated with Laura Bruegger’s 2nd place finish in the Shot Put at the State Meet. Still the girls of 1988 also had an outstanding year. Led by captain Lisa Walton, the team turned in some outstanding performances. Lisa Walton’s 100 high hurdle time of 17.1 seconds surpassed the scho record. The 3200 meter relay team of Joanne Dav Kim Smith, Nicole Doffing, and Katy Taubel ran record time of 10:58. It was a young team and ne year should be even better, says Coach Chuck Kargf Also, sprinter Stacy Losinski received the Most Val able Player award. Stacy gets set to sprint while Dan steps forward to give her confidence. (S. Losinski and D. Tentis) Above: Joanne, the only way you will make friends is to buy some Odor-Eaters for them sneakers! One of the bad things is that you get looked down upon by upperclassmen. In sports you have extra chores such as carrying equipment and cleaning up. You have to learn all the new rules and regulations and get used to the new building. One of the good things is that you’re out of the Middle School. Another is you have more freedom. You also have better class selections. The best thing is that you are one year closer to graduation. J. Lane C. Clickner, V. Johnson, K. Smith, T. Herzberg, C.
