(T. Schneider) I don't know about you, but Mondays have never been numero uno in my book. Nothing ever happens on soaps, it's never payday, and 1 usually get my tests back. A recent poll taken at W-K. agrees with me. Almost everyone said Mondays are the pits because it means five more days of school. Some said it was their worse day because it meant recovering from a Vikings loss. (Of course, Sunday could be just as bad if you watched them play!) Wednesdays came in second in the poll either because of religion or because students are worn out after two days of classes (I wonder what these people are like by Friday!?!) One student finds Thursdays a real bummer. That's Senior Citizens Day at Super. Just remember T. W., you'll be old some day! Fridays won by a landslide for favorite weekday. As Russ Miller puts it, you get to put your brain to rest. 1 Alright, Road Warriors! Who took Mrs. Nelson's microfilm? (T. Schneider, M. Gosse) 2 Those 7:30 a.m. practices are getting to Kari. (L. Sylvester Far Right: S. Stumpf The craziness of Homecoming hit W-K once again. We followed traditions, broke a couple, and created a few of our own. We started this chaotic week by dressing like Julius Caesar, Boy George, Fonzy, and Don Ho. Finally, our wardrobes cooled down to the simple, traditional red and white topped with 20 lbs. of buttons pinned (very carefully) all over our bodies! This, they say, is showing your spirit??? Our energy wasn't limited to school hours. We let loose at the annual Monday night skits. We snake-danced our way (and held up a little traffic) to the huge bonfire; then sprinted to our cars and cruised (a cool 70 mph) to Plainview on the traditional caravan ride. Friday afternoon, we filed down to the gym for a pep 8 fest (an easy way out of 7th hour, anyway). Enthusiasm was high as we enjoyed a 30-minute session of victory cries, pies in the face, and a tug of war ('85 took it away!). The cheering continued until the end of the football battle against Plainview. Half-time entertainment included performances by the Bravettes and the band, and a parade of our class floats ('86 won this one). The Indians put the Gophers back in their hole with 21-18 lit on the scoreboad. Roller jammed with the students for a great Homecoming dance, Saturday night. Lisa Agin was crowned queen, and Jim Roemer, king. Yes, Homecoming '84 was W-K's best. The true spirit of our school was seen in each and every moment of this year's event. Above left: F. With only one returning senior, Jacki Pavelka, one new senior, Ul-rika Lindbolm, and nine juniors the team had little experience, however, the juniors gained valuable experience by playing this year. Next year they expect to have many victories. This year's MVP was J. Pavelka, who was also the captain of the team. Jacki was also selected as a member of the TR All-Conference Team. Six sophomores and fourteen freshmen led the B squad to a season record of 8-9. This year's captain was Sue Tentis. The highlight of the season for the team was their victory at the Goodhue Invitational B Team tournament. They first beat Pine Island 2 out of 3, then sunk Wana-mingo 3 out of 3, and finally beat Goodhue 2 out of 3 for a victory. The victory against Goodhue enabled the team to bring home a first place trophy. Coach Huntoon commented, The girls were a talented group with the hustle, aggressiveness and Front row: U. The guys played a well-fought battle this year and deserve a great congratulations! Mike Loechler, senior co-captain, said, It was an exciting year, but I wish we could have made it to the playoffs. Troy Koopman, senior co-captain, remarked, We all had fun, but I wish we would have won a few more games. Dana Hendrickson and Terry Sylvester, let-termen stated, Everyone fought to the finish and we never quit. The Indians turned in victories over Lake City, Plainview, and Spring Valley. (The last two were in overtime). Troy Koopman and Mike Loechler were named to the Three Rivers All-Conference team. Mike Loechler was chosen M.V.P. 1985 Captains Troy Schneider and Dana Hendriksen hope to lead a fine group back to glory next year. This year's freshmen and B-Squads had a slow start but they came around and played well at the end of the season. It was definitely a learning experience for the players, one which will hopefully help them in future years. Those first few days were always exciting — seeing new faces, making new friends. All too soon, though, Homecoming had come and gone, the last touchdown scored, the final service made. Somewhere along the way, we chose class colors, ordered announcements, but still couldn't decide on a favorite senior proof (well, 1 had narrowed it down to six). Some of us even took time off to visit colleges and vocational schools (or dentists???). It wasn't long before we were taking finals and were once step closer to that final day. Coach Anderson stated that the success to our season was due to the hard work and cooperation of all the players on the team. The B-team finished the season with a 14-2 record. The highlight of the season was taking 2nd place in the Stewartville Christmas Tournament with victories over Rochester Lourdes and Winona Cotter. The team's best game of the season was a 25-point victory over Lewiston on their home court, according to coach Dalen. Easy two for Bouquet. It's not that we don't like school (stop snickering), it's just that things get to be such a routine especially if you have the same classes in winter as you had in fall. Of course there were those students who took off for sunny California in the middle of the trimester. Others settled for the malls in Rochester or took off a day to catch up on their favorite soaps like All My Children, The Guiding Light, General Hospital. (By the way, someone want to explain to Denny Pfeilsticker why Dove can't be his favorite soap?!?) The monotony was broken on Valentine's Day when Ron Schurhammer and Lisa Allen came to school wearing red lipstick and sheets. Even Cupid was embarrassed (although Ron never looked better)! With wrestling, gymnastics, and basketball, there were plenty of things to do after school. And when school events weren't scheduled, we caught our favorite TV shows like Riptide, Murder She Wrote, Miami Vice, and the Nightly News (Ron Merckling's favorite.) Thursday nights were reserved for Knots Landing. How did we ever get our homework done??? 1. But Mom, I want to come home! (J. Pa-trow) 2. Wow, Patty, how do you do that? (P McNallan) 3. There were no records broken, but Laura Bruegger went to regions for the shot-put. The relay teams did very well but didn't place in districts. Even though there were no spectacular wins, the team did a good job and should have a good season next year. Laura Bruegger was named the MVP. A little slow getting started Denae? Captains Terry Kronebusch, Jim Kohn, and John Merckling helped to lead the boys to a successful year. Jim advanced to regions and then state for the 200-meter dash. The boys 400-meter relay team advanced to regions. Rick Ellinghysen did exceptionally well, breaking and setting new records in both the discus and shot-put, and advancing to regions ion both. From there he moved on to state and finished second in discus. Terry Kronebusch also did some breaking of records in the pole vault by setting a new school record. Ellinghysen was named most valuable player. oftball Team Improves Greatly The season record of 6-12, including district game, was an improvement over the 2-15 season of a year ago. Four those losses were by a total of nine runs and five were to teams that reached Region 1 playoffs. The season overall showed that the W-K team could play with the best of them on occasion and have their off da also. The seven starters returning next year will more than likely be more consistent in their play and the resu should be another improving year to the extent of being in the thick of things for the conference and distri according to Coach Schumacher. Once Upon A Mattress takes place many moons ago in a far off land. Princesses from neighborhood kingdoms were competing for the honor of marrying Prince Dauntless (Rich Sill). The princesses had to pass an impossibly difficult test which domineering Queen Aggravain (Caia Sorenson) made them take. Dauntless was losing hope. Will he ever find a bride who can meet his mother's standards? Enter lovely Lady Larken (Chris Hammer) and brave Sir Harry (Garret Sorenson). Larken is in the family way, but the law says no one may marry until the Prince has wed. Harry leaves on a quest to find more available princesses. A month later, he returns with a new contestant, Winnifred the Woebegone, Princess of the Swamps (Tracy Wick), who, in her eagerness to meet Dauntless, swims the moat surrounding the palace. The queen loathes Winnifred on sight, but the prince is smitten and begs that she be allowed to compete. Henpecked, loveable King Sextimus (Brett Busch) likes Winnifred, but he can communicate only through pantomime. These characters, along with the other members of the queen's court, joined forces to outwit the queen, and in doing so, provided Wabasha-Kellogg audiences with an evening of medieval merriment. Oh-oh. We have a problem. (W. Wagner P. Stamschror) Yes, we did have a problem this year. Pictures were taken for library and office aides, but we never received prints of them. We are really sorry that we couldn't include them in this yearbook. lubs and Organizations Yearbook Staff Carol LOVES working on yearbook pages! (C. Lamey) Why aren't your pages done yet??? Are your pictures in yet? Why weren't you at the meeting?!? These are some of the questions every staff member must answer sometime during the school year. The advisor, Mrs. Loshek, wasn't asking those questions but Carol Lamey the editor of the yearbook. Carol's instructing, calling meetings, and harrassing were all part of getting staff members more involved in the production of the yearbook. The staff became involved in every part of developing the yearbook including the overall theme, and according to Mrs. Loshek, they did a fantastic job. After all the hardships, memory blocks, and good old relaxing summer vacation days, we, the annual staff, proudly and FINALLY present this yearbook to you. I First row: K. Polyard, R. They sold W-K towels to support the basketball teams and also accomplished something that has been impossible in the past: Getting a pop machine approved by the school board for the 1985-86 school year. Funds were raised by selling crystal, candy bars, and Valentine flowers and kisses. This was also the first year that sophomores were accepted as members. Because our soil is sandy and gravelly, we had a problem with poor early growth and foxtail competition. Still, it yielded about 2 tons per acre. We also had a softball and basketball team this year, but they weren't very successful, although, we did enj'oy participating with other teams. We had a fund raiser this year that consisted of selling fruit and cheese gift boxes just before Christmas, and we did quite well in sales this year. This year's president was Stan Rabehl, vice president, Darin Wallerich; secretary, Allan Bignell; treasurer, Brian Irish; reporter Jim Huth; sentinel Craig Weirather; and our advisor was Mr. Graupner. In December a new easier-to-use camera was purchased. We couldn't wait to use it! Now, when people see someone with a camera, they generally do one of two things — either act silly, abnormal (whatever you want to call it) or hide. If it wasn't for this first group (the abnormal ones), we would have a boring yearbook! We got lots of interesting pictures . . . until prom time. That's when the new camera started to act silly, abnormal (whatever you want to call it). We ended up with pictures of shoes and the backs of tuxedos. Thank heaven for students with instamatics!!! Our troubles didn't keep us down, though. Someone said, Cheer up, things could be worse. So we cheered up and sure enough, things got worse. The other camera refused to work. HELP!!! Thanks to Rika and her slides, we were able to complete the spring play pages. Do you suppose when people say don't take a picture, it will break the camera they mean it??? Front row: W. Wagner, D. Williams, P. Stamschror, J. 48 Patrow Back: R. Sill Besides the accomplishments of a few of our middle school team members, the speech team was fairly unsuccessful this year. Other schools may have thought that we lacked talent, but we certainly proved that we had an abundance of character. A meet in St. Charles, where we were stranded due to car problems (with, God forbid, no food), proved our team to be a group of voracious animals when we attacked an innocent bystander who happened to have in his possession a box of chocolate-covered donuts. Several times, due to Ms. Gilles' . . . ahem .. . wonderful driving abilities, we ran frightened drivers off the road and ended up on routes which we weren't suppose to be on in the first place! But, when we had to stop to ask for directions, people looked at us strangely and asked where we were from, we proudly proclaimed, Wabasha-Kellogg! Photography Club Front row: K.. Wodele, C. That gave us an idea! We thought it would be fun to see what our teachers looked like when they were in high school. What you see on these two pages is a result of some deep . digging on the part of our teachers and Mrs. Ostrom. Thankfully they were brave enough to lend us the pictures knowing full well that we would probably laugh at them. Probably? What do you think? Do they look the same?
