------- --------------------: When September arrives And activities start, Much fills our days, We can't tell them apart; We cherish them all, But our memory's not clear So in order to keep them, We've stored them in here. Now as they all happened, We've recorded each treasure, And when we have finished, You can read them with pleasure. Presenting WARRIOR Published By The Students Of Wabasha High School Wabasha, Minnesota We Dedicate This Book To Mr. I. ]. H. S. has been slightly upset by the arrival of the new freshman class. As freshmen, these students have gained the right to participate in chorus, to attend dances, and to enter the declamation contests. An added privilege for the boys is the right to participate in die much loved sports. With all this excitement, it is doubtful that the routine will return to normal very soon. 16 OUR ADMINISTRATION Walter Passe Tony Sharp Mr. Concidine Superintendent Mr. Boots High School Principal Bryce Carlson Kenneth Nelson Mr. Meyer Grade School Principal 18 Wabasha Elementary Teachers Audrey Funke Kindergarten Sheila Passe First Grade Florence Anderson Maxine Schmit Lorraine Curdue Second Grade Third Grade Fourth Grade Rosella Johnston Fifth Grade 19 Floy Burgess Sixth Grade High School Faculty Mr. Becker English Mr. Burkhardt Social Studies-Band Mrs. Boots Latin Mrs. Bill Commercial Mrs. Burn chter Special Education Mrs. Domish Jr. Hi. With a nucleus of 4 returning lettermen, Jack Alton, John Heins, John Loechler, and Bill Malone, Wabasha's Indians prepared for the 1966 gridiron season. A lack of experience was overcome by a youthful desire to play hard and the fine leadership provided by the four old pros . These attributes gave the Indians the incentive to gain a 3-4 record overall and a 3-3 record in conference play which enabled them to tie for third place. The experience will also give the Indians the building blocks for a fine 1967 campaign. Coach Nelson, Manager Blain Marcou, Coach Karger This year's basketball team got off to a slow start but as the season progressed, the boys found the key to success. Because of the many sophomores and juniors, the team has good potential for coming seasons and graduation will claim but two of the team's leaders, seniors Bill Malone and Jeff Peters. Sophomore Jim Malone and junior Leo Schmitz earned the all-conference titles as center and guard, respectively, Highlights of the hardcourt season included a 15 point victory over Faribault, a smashing 21 point success over Elgin, and a suspenseful 4 point vitory over a tough, top contending Randolph team. Assistant Managers Bruce Sharp, Tom King. Youth, inexperience, and a great deal of desire were the key notes of the 1966-67 B squad basketball season. This year was a job of rebuilding as all of last year's team members moved to A squad competition. After a slow start the youthful cagers gained confidence and began to play better ball. The nucleus for a fine B team will return for next year's campaign. Last year's team had a very successful season with 6 wins, 2 losses, and a tie. In conference play, they had 3 wins and a tie, giving them a conference co-championship with Randolph. This was the third title in the past four years. The team was led by the pitching and hitting of seniors Dennis Iverson and Gerald Loechler, the hitting and infield play of senior Peter Ekstrand and sophomore Leo Schmitz, and the sparkling defensive play of senior centerfielder Gary Johnson. Individually, the leading hitters were Dennis Iverson (428) and Peter Ekstrand (381). Dennis Iverson and Gerald Loechler led the mound staff with respective records of (3-1-1) and 2-0). The season's highlights were a no hit (11-0) victory against Mazeppa pitched by Dennis Iverson, and a 15 hit attack (18-5) victory over a strong Dodge Center team in district play. This year's team, although weakened by the loss of four fine senior ball players, may develope into a winning team by season's end if several young ball players come through. Returning lettermen are John Loeckler, Mike Clickner, Leo Schmitz, Dave Markey, Terry Chadwick, Joe Schouweile, Bill Clickner, and Wayne Smith. Newcomers are Jeff Peters, Jack Alton, Keith Graner, Jim Malone, Bob Scheel, and David Arens. We are hopeful that these boys will develope into a winning team by the time district play begins. 46 Seniors 47 DAVE MARKEY JACK ALTON Track ROW Is Jerry Collier, John Ridgeway, Joe Schouweiler, John Heins, John Loechler, Jeff Peters. ROW 2: Coach Mr. Karger, Steve Raimer, Dave Arens, Bill Clickner, John LaRocque, Paul Kennedy, Bob Scheel, Tom King. The Wabasha Indian track squad, complete with all their equipment, embarked on an adventuresome 1967 season. It was a fine team comprised of many capable underclassmen and senior lettermen. Fine performances were turned in by John Ridgeway and Jack Alton in the 100 and 220 yard dashes, Jeff Peters and Tom King in the open 440 yard dash, Peter Loechler and Gerald Collier in the 880 yard dash. Jim Malone and Terry Chadwick, did equally well in the high jump. Terry also showed skill in the high and low hurdles. Joe Schouweiler came through admirably in the pole vault, hi the weight department a strong trio consisting of Bill Malone, John Heins, and Bill Clickner have shown consistent progress. The mile relay team including Jack Alton, Joe Schouweiler, Bill Clickner have shown fine improvement over last year's attempts and have continued to improve their time throughout the season. Coach Karger is planning on a fine '68 season with a possible twelve returning lettermen. 48 Seniors 49 JACK ALTON Annual Staff ROW 1: Judy Mathias, Betsy Hennings, Kathy Roemer, Mary Ellen Schmit. The objective of nine members of the senior class as they participated in County Days at the Wabasha Courthouse was to learn more about the actual operation of government on the local level. Students were elected as county officials by class vote, the election being patterned after the local county elections. Elected students then met with their county counterparts to gain first hand information about the duties and responsibilities involved. Noon lunch was served at the American Legion Annex, followed by a very thought provoking speech on patriotism by Mr. Cy Carroll. A most enjoyable and educational day was brought to a close by attending an actual court case to observe and learn courtroom procedure. After taking a vote, each member was asked to buy a beanie to wear to the forth-coming basketball games. Poster hanging through-out the high school and cheering for our cag-ers, helped to bring more school spirit to the rest of the student body and the members of the team. A candy sale was held to raise money for a rollerskating party at Ark-ansaw. Once again the Pep Club was very successful in all its endeavors throughout the 1966-67 year. 53 Pep Club ROW 1: Kathy Curdue, Linda Ranvick, Dianna Richardson, Kathy Nelson, Nancy Meyer, ROW 2: Jim Markey, Ken Gosse, Dorla Grieves, Laura Tentis, Sue Roth, Janet Miller, Janet Freiermuth. ABSENT: John Sargent, Mary Ellen Schmit The graduating class of 67 opened the spring thespian season with a smashing presentation of Tish. The book, by Mary Roberts Rinehart, was specially adapted for stage by Alice Chad-wich. As the curtain rises, the audience found itself viewing a quaint little hotel scene. Nephew Charlie Sands enters and worriedly questions the lovely hotel owner, Ellen Leighton, about his three missing aunts. His worries are well founded as his non-driving aunt and her two friends drive in. Soon the plot unfolds, and we find spirited Aunt Tish has bound and gagged the sheriff, believing him to be an outlaw; she has ridden thither and yon with her companions through the New Mexican sage on wild broncos; she has flown madly through the skies over Mexico, creating international repercussions; and then, to top off the entire trip, she decides to play detective and capture a much dreaded bandit. From beginning to end, Tish and her far-out cohorts had the audience rolling with laughter. 57 58 MB 59 Declamation Declamation ROW 1: Kathy Nelson, Kathy Curdue, Janet Friermuth, Rose Mary Carrels, Betsy Hennings, Judy Mathias. Advisor Mr. Richard Nelson. The Student Council of Wabasha High, in its first year as an official member of the State Student Council, was one of activity and school leadership. The nineteen Student Council members were chosen by the student body on the basis of class leadership after a formal election in each class. Among the accomplishments during the year, was the purchasing of an Indian Mascot outfit paid for through the moneymaking projects of broom and candy sales. A Sadie Hawkins Day Dance was sponsored for the first time, featuring the Litters from the Twin Cities. During the Christmas season, the students, under the guidance of the Student Council, sent gifts of candy, cake, and cigarettes to a Medical Dispensary in Saigon, Vietnam. Later, we received a note of appreciation which was published in the Wabasha Herald. The Honor Roll Board was maintained during the year under the management of the Student Council. The Student Council promoted the formation of new clubs and class activities which helped to improve school spirit. After the spring election for the school term of 1967-68, the Student Council performed a gavel passing ceremony. The spring election was the first time the Student Council elected representatives through campaigns and short speeches. 64 Student Council SITTING, L-R: John Burkhart, Bryclynn Carlson, Tina Peters, Cathy Marquardt, Bob Scheel, Allen Nelson, Terry Glaze.
