Lichtblau Second Row: L. Ekstrand, D. Jones, J. Concidine, T. Smit, Mrs. Bill, Mrs. Waterbury We of the Annual Staff will present to you in this, the 1962 WARRIOR, the many events of the past year. We shall look on the serious as well as on the gay side of school life. In the WARRIOR you will see pictures of your teachers, friends, and classmates. You will catch glimpses of the many extra-curricular activities--some of which you have watched and others in which you have participated. We hope this WARRIOR will hold for you as many fond memories of the past year (61-62) as it does for the seniors who are graduating. We will receive no more of the knowledge and understanding from the many outstanding teachers who have helped us in the past and will continue to help you in the future. For these reasons we have worked to give you the best WARRIOR possible. THE ANNUAL STAFF TABLE OF CONTENTS DEDICATION . ADMINISTRATION UNDERCLASSES SENIORS . . . ATHLETICS . . ACTIVITIES . . Page 4 . However, this has had no part in the education of this year’s seniors. Therefore, we dedicate this annual to the school as we knew it. They have been a help to everyone and an asset to the school and its students. We would also like to extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to John Mehren and Harry Lager who have served W.H.S. for 11 and 9 years respectively. We don't know what we, as a class, would have done without them. They are familiar with such student problems as-- Can we have a ladder so we can decorate for the prom? and Have you seen my book? I know it's around school. We are sure they have heard them in the past and will continue to hear them in the future. While this record isn t too impressive, we must remember that there were only five returning lettermen and that a lack of experienced players was evident. The team also lost two games which were heartbreakers. One of these was a non-conference game with Alma which was won in the final seconds by a score of 6-0. The other was the last game of the season played with Elgin with the score being 21-16. Three members of the team were placed on the All-Conference team. Thesq were seniors Jon Gillmore and Leroy Ekstrand plus junior Bill Bruegger. Jim Concidine, Dave Jones, Frank 0 Flaherty, and Tom Smit received honorable mention. Although the team will lose the services of six senior lettermen, the next few seasons should be better because of the experience gained by the younger members of the squad. Halverson A TEAM This year’s team became Wabasha’s highest scoring team with a total of 1042 points for an average of 61.3 points per game. This was remarkable when you take into consideration that they were always the smallest team on the floor. The team averaged 5 9 with Don Wilcox the tallest at 6 0 and Dave Jones the smallest at 5’ 6”. Lack of height was the team’s greatest detriment, desire and confidence their greatest assets. Dave Jones, the team’s handy man, and Jon Gillmore, the team’s most versatile player, captained this year’s squad. Leroy Ekstrand became the team’s best driver and one of the best rebounders in the conference for his size. Jim Glynn, a sophomore, was a steady all-around player who showed steady improvement in all phases of the game. He could become one of Wabasha’s greatest players. Jon Gillmore was the team’s leading scorer with a total of 346 points and a 20.35 average per game. This made him the highest scorer in Wabasha’s history. Jim Concidine was second with a total of 301 points and an average of 17.71 points per game. Jim was probably the deadliest outside shooter in the conference. Another record was set by the team when they scored 95 points in defeating Mazeppa, a conference foe. In this game, Jim Concidine and Jon Gillmore combined for a total of 62 points, also a record. Wabasha, finishing third in the conference, was honored with the selection of its scoring twins, Jon Gillmore and Jim Concidine, to the All-Conference Team. This was the second consecutive year for Jon as an All-Conference selection. 42 43 First row: J. Ekstrand, Second row: Mr. Meschke, Third row: P. Ekstrand, G. Zierdt, T. Hammer S. Taverna, J. Burkhardt, R. Schuth, J. Edwards, J. L. Wolfe, G. St. Jacques Reinhardt, M. Marquardt Our B'' squad enjoyed a relatively successful year. The results of the games show that the season was divided into two parts. After initiating the season with a well-earned victory over Pepin, the team lost seven of the next eight games. A complete reversal of form brought victory in six of the seven remaining games. Sophomores and freshmen that showed good potential were: Taverna, Zierdt, Burkhardt, and Reinhardt. Leroy Ekstrand, who scored 1 of the teams points, placed first in the low hurdles with a time of 23.9 seconds, second in the broad jump, third in the discus, and anchored the 880 relay team, which won with a time of l:Ul. Other relay team members were Chuck Greive, Alfred Holten, and Jon Gillmore. Wilfred Wagner placed second in the mile run, Jim Glynn second in the IUjO-yard dash, Gary LaRocque second in the high hurdles, and Jon Gillmore second in the low hurdles. Alfred Holten was fifth in the 220, Greive took fourth in the shot put, and Gerry Zierdt tied for third in the high jump. Chuck Greive was fifth in the 100-yard dash; and Larry Schmit was fourth in the UiO. Bill Bruegger placed fifth in the 880-yard run, and the mile relay team comprised of Wagner, Glynn, Zierdt, and Schmit took a third. Second year lettermen on the team were Leroy Ekstrand and Jon Gillmore. First year lettermen were Bill Bruegger, Chuck Grieve, -Alfred Holton, Wilfred Wagner, Jim Glynn, Gary LaRocque, and Tom Smit. Four team members are graduating, but they will leave a strong nucleus of track men for next year. 45 BASEBALL First row: G. Kennebeck, C. Hermuncison, B. Bruegger, J. Vagner, S. Taverna G. This year's team had a mediocre season, but the team improved steadily as the time passed. They ended the season with a 3-1 triumph over the league leading Eyota team. The team will lose the services of seniors Jim Concidine, Jon Gillmore, and Dave Jones, but the younger players should fill the open positions adequately. Halverson BAND This year’s band Dresented both a Winter and a Spring concert, gave outdoor concerts during the summer, and marched in parades. The pep-band continued to add spirit to home games by providing lively music between games and at half time. We are under the very capable direction of Mr. I. J. Burkhardt. The band will loose some seniors this year, but next year’s band, though young, will again become a credit to Wabasha High. 48 DECLAMATION First row: Second row: Third row: Fourth row: B. Rollins, A.
