WABASHA FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA The Wabasha Chapter of the Future Farmers of America with 45 men was bigger and better than ever for 1956-57. Officers were: president, Don Jacoby: vice president, Tom Tentis: secretary, Herman Gander; treasurer, Richard Meurer; reporter. Robert Meurer; advisor, Mr. W. W. Stegemann. The Chapter has taken part in many different projects during the year. In order to make money for the Chapter we started a gilt ring, sold magazines, screw driver sets and fire extinguishers. We plan on renting some land this spring. The Chapter has many accomplishments of which to be proud. Don Jacoby won the District Cow Clipping Contest: Herman Gander won a trip to Kansas City. In the District Poultry Judging Contest, Robert Vaplon, Kenneth Freese and John Rollins won fourth place. Clifford Blattner and Allen Rahman won fourth place in the District Contour Line Teams. Don Jacoby, Herman Gander, Tom Tentis and Wilmar Timm received State Farmer Degrees. Also. Pat Halverson, Bernard Roemer, Rodney Rabe and Roger Meurer have purchased purebred livestock. We have had a very successful year in F.F.A. DECLAMATION The Declam contest was held February 25, 1957. at the Public School. There were eighteen entries. Judges picked winners from each group so there would be members from each group participating in the District Speech Festival at Winona. The winners were as follows: Serious Inter-perative Reading: Linda Hurtig, Pete Palmen, Wes-lyn Concidine, Pat Webb. Humorous Division: Jean Rabe, Patsy Malles. Original Oratory: John Rollins. Memorized Oratory: Sue Heitman. Extemporaneous Manuscript: Joan LaMoyne. At Winona, Joan LaMoyne received a Superior rating and then participated at the Cannon Falls Speech Festival. There she received an Excellent rating. 24

BAND The Band held its annual Winter Concert on December 10, 1956, in the gym, which was gaily decorated with choir boys and big silver bells on the curtains and two small Christmas trees. Several selections by the band, musical numbers by the Glee Club, Mixed Chorus and the Junior High School group of WHS and also the St. Felix Chorus all combined to make it a success. Band Solo The annual instrumental contest for the schools of the Third District was held at Stewart-ville. Wabasha had eight entries. They were as follows along with their rating: Clarinet Solo — Sharon Malone — A Cornet Solo — Leigh Johnson — A Cornet Solo — Ed Passe — B Cornet Solo — John McDonald — 13 The annual Spring Concert was held Thursday evening, April 25, 1957 at the Wabasha High School gymnasium. Participants were members of the Pepin High School and Wabasha High Schools band. Others were the Wabasha High Mixed Chorus and the girls’ Glee Club under the direction of Mrs. Kenneth Nelson. The St. Felix High School Chorus also participated to make this annual event a big success. Contest Cornet Trio — John McDonald, Ed Passe and Leigh Johnson — A Brass Quartet — Gomer Jones, Ed Passe, Leigh Johnson and John McDonald — A Baritone Sax Solo — Mary Klas — A Baritone Solo — Gomer Jones — A Everyone who participated should be congratulated for they all did a fine job. 23

It is composed of junior high homemaking students. Future Homemakers develop creative leadership through making it possible for every member to participate in planning and doing. Chapters stress individual respon sibility and cooperation so that members will become more cooperative family members. The motto of F.H.A. is “Toward New Horizons”, symbolizing that the future homes of America are in the hands of its youth. The flower is a red rose.
