Class History On September 8, 1953, Wabasha High School was plagued with the worst epidemic ever seen in its history. Yes, you’ve guessed it! Twenty-four green, but confident Freshmen entered the portals of Wabasha High. They were Suzanne Blatter, Rich ard Counter, Eugene Dammann, Nancy Gilbert, Nancy Glynn, Bernard Gosse, Leigh Johnson, David Kennebeck, Mary Klas, Sharon Malone, John McDonald, Christine Ridgeway and John Zierdt, all of whom were originals and have been with us since kindergarten. Others who joined us in later years and were with us when we were initiated into the big Freshman class were Clifford Blattner, Dan Cliff, Charles Dornack, Herman Gander, Lester Hansch, Mary Longley, Richard Meurer, Robert Meurer, Bernard Roemer, Janice Rupkalvis and Wayne Wirth. All were frightened at first but few realized what fame the “Class of ’57” would bring to the halls of Wabasha High. Once the dreaded “Freshman Initiation was over we all began to feel a little mere at home. For class officers that year we elected Herman Gander as president; Wayne Erdmann as vice president; Janice Rupkalvis as secretary; and Ronnie Erdmann as treasurer. On September 7, 1954, we returned to the now familiar halls as silly Sophomores, only to find each day a little more exciting and enjoyable than the previous ones. We elected the following officers: president, Herman Gander; vice president, Leigh Johnson; secretary, Jack Zierdt; and treasurer, John McDonald. We found that Virginia Anding, Joanne Herbst, Barbara Hoops, Bradley Jensen, Darlene Luhmann and Loa Wiebusch were trying their hardest to add some intelligence to our class. The next year on September 6, 1955, we returned to find that Joyce Hermundson, Dennis Lichtblau, Darlene Schumacher and Judy Tiede-mann had joined our ranks. The following officers were elected for our big eventful Junior year: presi- dent, Sharon Malone; vice president, Bradley Jensen; secretary, Leigh Johnson, and treasurer, John McDonald. This was a very busy year for us. We ordered our idolized class rings. Everyone was very pleased with our choice. “Pennies From Heaven”, (the Junior Prom) added to our being busy. Finally after continuous work the decorating was completed. It was one of the nicest proms ever put on at Wabasha High. That year we also put on the annual Junior Class Play, “Line of Scrimmage”, which also turned out to be a huge success. In looking back on our Junior year, I can’t forget to mention our Little Bongo Band furnished by certain Junior beys, (names withheld in case of incrimination). Oh, well, boys, it all added to a good year’s fun. On September 4, 1956. we returned as dignified Seniors. Joe Fredrickson, Rose Marie Johnson, Loretta Leisen and Carol Schouweiler had joined us to later become graduates of Wabasha High School. Class officers were elected as follows: Charles Dornack, president; Rich Counter, vice president; Dan Cliff, secretary; and Herman Gander, treasurer. During that year, we were stricken with a terrible tragedy. George Billings, who was one of the class originals, was killed in a car accident. We all pray to God that nothing as terrible as this will ever have to happen to any member of any class in future years. We published the 1957 Warrior and put on oud Senior Class Play during this year. “Green Valley” was the title of the play which proved to be quite successful. Graduation now ends the school history of the Class of 1957, but its fame will increase in years to come. n 15 CRYSTAL BALL NAME PASTIME REALIZATION AMBITION WEAKNESS “Ginny Anding Dancing at VFW - . The Chapter has taken part in many different projects during the year. In order to make money for the Chapter we started a gilt ring, sold magazines, screw driver sets and fire extinguishers. We plan on renting some land this spring. The Chapter has many accomplishments of which to be proud. Don Jacoby won the District Cow Clipping Contest: Herman Gander won a trip to Kansas City. In the District Poultry Judging Contest, Robert Vaplon, Kenneth Freese and John Rollins won fourth place. Clifford Blattner and Allen Rahman won fourth place in the District Contour Line Teams. Don Jacoby, Herman Gander, Tom Tentis and Wilmar Timm received State Farmer Degrees. Also. Pat Halverson, Bernard Roemer, Rodney Rabe and Roger Meurer have purchased purebred livestock. We have had a very successful year in F.F.A. DECLAMATION The Declam contest was held February 25, 1957. at the Public School. There were eighteen entries. Judges picked winners from each group so there would be members from each group participating in the District Speech Festival at Winona. The winners were as follows: Serious Inter-perative Reading: Linda Hurtig, Pete Palmen, Wes-lyn Concidine, Pat Webb. Humorous Division: Jean Rabe, Patsy Malles. Original Oratory: John Rollins. Memorized Oratory: Sue Heitman. Extemporaneous Manuscript: Joan LaMoyne. At Winona, Joan LaMoyne received a Superior rating and then participated at the Cannon Falls Speech Festival. INITIATION This fall the seniors got their chance to do some initiation. The horrid eve fell on October 24, 1956. The seniors fixed the gym so it appeared to be a palace dungeon. Spears, swords and other useful devices of torture were assembled and used as props on the stage. THE FRESHMEN took it all in stride and had a good time. The initiation dance was held after initiation and everyone had a good time. 31 vow ■ :' Autographs Snaps 1. Legs. 2. Come as you are 3. Dig that! 4. Oh! 5. Cheeks 6. Looking it over 7. The world has changed quite a bit and so have the ‘57’ grads. It seems Charles Dornack, our class president, has gone into the flaming business and is making money hand over fist, though he had a little trouble getting started. Cliff Blattner got to be flying ace of the Air Force. He just arrived in his new space jet. He says he is going to the moon from “here”. Mrs. Richard Counter, the former Joyce Her-mundson, just drove in. in her new jet-propelled Cadillac. She bought it with the money Rich is paying her for alimony. Seems she caught him with Sharon Malone, that famous movie star. Seems Rich couldn’t make it because he’s in the hospital suffering from head and chest injuries. I guess he could stay longer seeing his nurse who is taking care of him is Tena Ridgeway. It seems Sue Blatter, Darlene Luhman, and Virginia Anding are doing fine. They just bought a 15-room house in Hammond, a most fashionable district, and hired Miss Barbara Hoops as an “upstairs” maid. I guess Brad Jensen is tired all the time these days. Says that 200-acre farm of his is just too much at his age. The two big game hunters, Lester Hansch and Wayne Wirth ran into trobule on their last trip to Africa and by the looks of them, those natives must be something. Our two great scientists, Leigh Johnson and Pete Gosse, have been trying to find a new cure for chicken-pox. I don’t know whether they’ll find one, but one thing sure, they’ll keep trying. Loa Wiebusch and Lucille Schumann say they are very happy in their jobs. Both are modeling French bathing suits in Massey’s. Wendella Peters, our famous lecturer, just dropped in for a few minutes. She had to catch a plane for London where she is to speak. Dan Cliff and Jack Zierdt say they have the toughest feet in the whole infantry. John McDonald and Gene Dammann are doing just fine with their wild animal act. Though John says it is a little dangerous at times. A lion bit off two of his fingers a couple of weeks ago. It seems Dave Kennebeck has taken up raising horses. He said these new high-powered cars are just too dangerous. Carol Schouweiler, Rosie Johnson and Judy Tiedemann are all happily married now and raising children. Their husbands are all working in Herman Gander’s steel mill on the outskirts of Kellogg. Joe Fredrickson and his assistant, Bill Wemp-ner, are doing alright. They are coaching football at Oklahoma A M. And their team hasn’t lost a game this season. Loretta Leisen and Janice Rupkalvis are doing fine. Both are teaching Genetics at the University of Minnesota. Mary Klas and Jean Rabe, beauty consultants from Mademoiselle Jacksons in New York City were picked up for speeding on its new turnpike. The cop was none other than Bugs Meurer. Dennis Lichtblau has surprised us all. He has taken Mr. Boots’ place as principal of Wabasha High School. We are sorry to say that Nancy Glynn and Mary Longley could not be here at this time because they are playing with the Philharmonic Orchestra in New York City. JoAnn Herbst and Nancy Gilbert have taken a great interest in politics. JoAnn has become the first woman governor of California and Nancy will soon be appointed to the Supreme Court Justice. Darlene Schumacher just arrived in her chauffeur driven limousine. Her husband made his money by raising grapes. Last, but not least, Rich Meurer just arrived from Mars and is going to Saturn. It looks as though the great explorer has been every place else. Well, I guess that is the end of the reunion. Everybody has to get back to their homes and jobs, but maybe we’ll have another in forty years. 35 Under Paris Skies The annual Junior-Senior Prom was held May 11 in the high school gymnasium. In accordance with their theme, “Under Paris Skies”, the Juniors decorated the gym beautifully with pastel crepe paper. The park scene was beautified by li ttle animals and revolving colored lights. The Grand March was headed by Pete Palmen and Georgia Van Houten. The music of “The Esquires” made the evening perfect. Pennies from Heaven The Junior and Senior Prom of 1956 was led by Sharon Malone and Ken O'Brien, Janice Rupkalvis and Bill McDonald. The theme, “Pennies from Heaven”, was the set of the evening with music furnished by Pal Thebe and his orchestra. The highlight of the evening was the coronation of the King and Queen of the Prom. They were Ken O’Brien and Margie Whitmore. A revolving penny, six-feet high, and numerous smaller pennies, hung from the starred ceiling, covering one end of the gym. The tables were gaily set with penny candle holders, surrounded by angel hair and dainty umbrella nut cups. The Freshmen girls, dressed in blue taffeta strapless dresses, with copper colored aprons, were the servers. After the dance, there was a party at the T errace and a movie at the theatre. 36 Memories 37 Best Wishes from SCHNELL'S CLOTHING Samsonite Luggage for Graduation DEAN'S for Men and Boys Wabasha, Minn.
