He realized that a man was not getting the most out of life unless he was doing what he wanted to do. So one bright morning he came down in the elevator and never went up again. Since that time, for thirty-five years he had been presiding over a mad-cap house- hold whose occupants were allowed to live to the fullest degree without any restrictions. He refused to pay an income tax and was, there- fore, visited by an irate income tax collector tRichard Leonardj, who thoughout the ,play sent threatening letters to him. Vanderhof's daugh- ter, Penelope Sycamore tlvliargery Martini, was a writer of plays, none of wihich had ever been produced, and a paiinfter of pictures which would never find their way into any gallery. She had married Paul Sycamore tDavid Smithl. whom she :met at a fireworks display, and whose chief concern was 'manufacturing fireworks in the basement of their home. Thev had reared two daughters, Essie and. Alice. Essie tMary Ann Nauglel desired more than anythingto become -a great ballet dianc-er but was resigned to mak- inle candv and selling it, until the big break came. She had married Ed Carmichael fRf-.n- ald Hollofwayl who spent his time vplaying the xvlophone and operating' a printing press. In this household also 'were Donald -and Rheba. tBill Rife and Barbara Schlemmerl, a colored r-ounle who considered themselves part of the family, and Mr. DeiPina CMarlin McDanielJ, an ice man who had come to deliver ice five PRODUCTION STAFF Director ..,............................... Three days later the Apaches traveled to Elwood to defeat one of the conference co-favorites 25-6. The fol- lowing Friday t.he Scalpers wenlt to Fort Wayne to defeat the Concordia Cadets 20-6 on dusty Dfwenger Piark Field. One week later the Apaches journeyed to Huntington for their toughest test olf the season up to bhis time. After 48 minutes of hard-fought football the Amaches were victorious 27-19. Then, las a tune-un for the Plymouth game, the Scalpers defeated Mon- ticello- 37-7. On October 7, the Plyimouth Rockies enter- ed Wabash to play in what was undoubtedly to be tlhe deciding battle in the conference. The Rockies administered Aipaches' only defeat of the season in a 'galflle highlighted by the sub-par playing of the Apaches. After a week of gruel- ling practice under Coach Tatum. the boys de- feated Peru 27-6, and then in the next week rolled over Hartford City, 33-12. In the last game of the season tihe Apaches defeated their old rival Marion 33-6 to end the gridiron year with an 8-1 record. Wabash quarterback, Jim Vrooman, and two ends, Whitey Thomson and Kaye Wil- son, were chosen for the All-Conference first team. Jerry Renharger. fullback, Jack Amick, hal-faback, and Ken Hettrnansperger, center, were chosen for the All-Conference second team. The Wabash line was spearheaded by vet- eran guards Wayne Devore, Kelly Eltzroth, an-d veteran tackles Ted Parker and Bud Hettmans- perger. These boys opened massive holes for their backs and refused to budge while on de- fen-se. Leonard Drook switched from quarter- back to half-back in fall nnactice and displayed a surprising amount off power and cleverness. At the annual banquet, service clubs of Wabash presented footballs to eight seniors: Thomson, Wilson, Amick. Devore, Parker, Drook, Tom Herrell, and Vernon Leland. Wabash's hopes for an ex- cellent season Were ruined by a mediocre first halt in which they won only half their games. After winning from what seemed to be the big teams, the Apaches lost to the weaker ones. With the help of several underclcfssmen the team improved steadily to complete the season with a record of l5 wins and ll losses. After the scheduled games had come to an end, the Apaches entered the Sectional and came out victor- ious by defeating North Manchester three points in the first game and Roann by one point in the finals. Wabash then journeyed to the Regional to defeat Converse 35 to 30. The season was terminated that evening when Wabash lost to Sheridan 34-39. Although Wabash will lose seven letter- men --- Driscoll, Ogan, Scheerer, Thomson, Weesner, Williams, Wilson --- five of Coach Ward Smiths varsity men will return and with the help of this year's B team will have a bright future. How humble we feel when we realize that we, with our exhortations, can do little to make the way smoother for our successors. But we cannot pass from these halls without making some effort toward perpetuating our ideals. Let us say to the generations which are to follow: Where we have built, build higher. Beyond our goals, aspire. When we have thought, think longer. Where we were strong, be stronger. Page Forty-Nine - CLETA MAE BRAUNELLER-Academic GAA: Dramalics: Radio Workshop: Library Club: Chorus.
