The Elwood Panthers spoiled the Scalp- ers' initial gridiron opener on Alumni Field by defeating the Tatummen, 20-0. To most Wab- ash followers it looked as if the Apaches would have a losing season, but on the fol- lowing Friday night they drubbed Concordia of Fort Wayne, 27-0, for their first victory. Huntington handed the Apaches their sec- ond setback of the season on September 24, by a 40-0 score. It was their Worst loss to the Vikings in several years. Plymouth continued its old jinx over the Orange and Black team by scoring a 20-6 win at the Rookie Field. Peru's Tigers, long arch-rivals of Wabash, were the next foe, and the Bengals were heavy favorites. Before nearly 5,000 fans at Peru, the Apaches and Peru battled to a l3-13 dead- lock. The unusual part about this game was that there were only 15 yards in penalties, and that penalty was for too many time-outs. The typical Wabash-Peru game would usual- ly be rougher. Another unusual incident was that neither of the two teams used a punt the whole contest. A Following this encouraging game Wab- ash journeyed to the home of the Hartford City Airedales, where they won their first Central Indiana Conference tilt of the year by a 25-6 score. The win at Hartford City was the first of three wins for the Scalpers in the final half of their season. Wabash tripped Bluffton next, 20-13, at the latter's field and then returned home three nights later to drub the Marion Giants, 35-25, Row l: Moyer, Brunn, Herrell, Parker, T. Vice, Washburn, D. The Papooses showed lighting spirit typical of Wab- ash reserve teams in the past and fought the hardest when the chips were down. The boys that played on the B team this last year will be expected to take the places vacated by those graduating. H. S. A few tough breaks were the only thing that kept the Lawsonmen from going all the way to the State Finals at Indianapolis. Auburn's Red Devils, who did reach the Big Four, were nipped by the Scalpers in a regular season tilt, 41-40. Kokomois Wildcats, always a tournament jinx of the Apaches, edged Wabash, 55-53, in the final game of the Regional at Marion after Wabash had stopped Sheridan in the afternoon game, 50-53. During the regular schedule Wabash had beaten Kokomo, 49-48. Page Fifty-Five In gaining 20 victories in 26 games, the Orange and Black netters tossed in 1,362 points to set an all-time Wabash High School scoring mark. The old record was set by the 1945-46 team of 1,024 points. Of all the teams, five to be exact, coached here by Mentor Lawson, not one fought more gamely than this year's team. In the final Regional contest the Kokomo aggregation had the Scalpers down 10 points with six minutes to play, but the Scalpers tied the score twice before the final gun sounded. In the Central Indiana Conference, Wabash finished in third place, winning seven games, and losing three. Only once in five years that Coach Lawson has been at the helm of the W. H. S. cage teams has Wabash finished out of the first division in the loop. Richard Driscoll James Hipshler Frank Merritt Richard Miller Junior Forward Senior Center Senior Forward Senior Guard lst. The junior sniper hit 32 points against Plymouth to tie the single-game scoring record set by Muff Davis of Elwood in 1942 and in turn tied by Johnny Rockwell o'f Wabash in 1946. Wilson, also, along with Big' Jim Hipsher, senior center, was selected to the Central Indi- ana Conference all-star team. Wabash was the only team to place two men on the first team. Page Fifty-Sing. Dick Miller and Galen Weaver, hard driv- ing senior guards, were nominated for the Indi- ana A11-Star team which plays a group of Ken- tucky stars each year in June. At the Syca- more deadline the team had not been named. Last, but not least,. comes the fine play of Dale Whitey Thomson, junior forward. Whitey came through with the baskets when they were needed most. In the final of the Sectional tournament against LaFontaine, Thomson contributed 21 points as Wabash won, 62-32. Bean, Williams Their lone defeat was suffered at the hands of the Anderson Indians, the present State Champions, by a score of 27-28. With this year's record and that of the last five years, Coach Austin Holloway is very proud of these willful runners. Though losing their title of Conference Champions to Burris of Muncie, they took sec- ond place and brought home two of the five conference medals. The going was good in the sectional, for the hctrriers repeated their second-place position of 1947, thereby allow- ing them to compete in the State Finals. There, the Apaches bettered their twelfth place standing of 1947 by finishing in tenth position. With two of the first five runners back, the Cross-Country outlook for next year is fairly good.
