Staff members were chosen: immediately the sales promotion began, and the engravers, photographers, and printers were contacted. Since then we have been selling concessions for funds, arranging copy, choosing a cover, and meeting dead- lines. We devoted our time and energy in trying to make this year's Syca- more a book that will be pleasantly remembered. Editorials.. The 1946 Apaches were one of the lightest ball clubs in the history of W. H. S., but the boys made up in fight what they lacked in weight. The season opener against Kokomo found the Apaches outplaying the- Kats in the first half, but because of their tremendous reserve power the Kats over- whelmed the Scalpers 3l to 13. The following week the Elwood Panthers won their first game from the Apaches since 1933, with a score of 21 to 6. Huntington C. I. A. C. champs cleaned camp and went home with a 35-13 vic- tory over the locals. Then the Scctlpers saw the light for the first time when the Howe Military Acad- emy marched to Wabash and met defeat to a 36 to 19 score. Next Plymouth beat the Apaches 34-28 in a very hard-fought contest. Peru, another of those rival teams, defeated Wabash 21 to 0. The Tigers had one of the heaviest lines in the state, including their two 260-pound tackles. The Apaches downed Hartford City 28 to 7 on a water-soaked field, to keep their long-time reputation as mudders . With the reserves playing most of the game. the Apaches defeated Marion 36 to 26. The Victory Bell was returned to the Scalpers, thus finishing the season with three wins and five losses. Prior to the Marion game Iim Fred Parks was chosen honorary captain for the season. Stineman and Parks were selected on the first A11-conference team. Young- love and Feamow were chosen for the third team. Wabash Scalpers Basketball ..... The 1946-47 Wabash Apaches started the season with only two lettermen, lim Caims and Fred Parks, from last season, the rest of the team being made up of underclassmen from the second team. These boys were inexperienced but came along in fine shape to make up a well-balanced ball club. Although the Scalpers won only two games all season, they looked very good in several contests and with a few breaks would have won several games and finished with a good season. The team, however, displayed a fine attitude and a good competitive spirit: and they looked good even in defeat. The team started off their season against Kokomo's Wildcats, giving thern a nip and tuck game up until the last quarter when Kokomo pulled away to a 52 to 28 victory. They then journeyed to North Manchester to lose a close game 44 to 39. Auburn came to Wabash to give the Apaches a heart- Row 1: R. McDaniel, B. Kulb, J. Cairns, L. Martin Row 22' J. The team then went on to lose to Huntington 43 to 27, Hartfon.. Jity, 36 to 35, Tipton 40 to 33, Elwood 50 to 38 and Rochester 46 to 32, before going into the blind tourney at Huntington on New Year's Day. The favored team, Huntington, won the tourney with Wabash losing in the afternoon to Misha- waka and at night to Auburn's Bed Devils. The first game in January saw Wabash downed by Peru 53 to 18. The Scalpers then traveled to Waukegan, Illinois, to play a very strong Bulldog team, only to get sent back with a 58 to 23 loss. Muncie Bun'is Owls put it to the Wabash Five 53 to 25, and then Monticello eked out a victory in a hard fought battle 4l to 37. Marion's Giants, state finalists, breezed past the Apaches 49 to 285 then Plymouth brushed past the varsity 45 to 42 in a battle of the referees. Peru again downed the Scalpers 61 to 37, followed by South Side of Fort Wayne 49 to 25, and Warsaw 38 to 35, before the locals finally came through with a 39 to 37 decision over Alexandria. The Scrappin' Scalpers met and defeated Laketon in the first game of the sectional tourney in a double overtime 42 to 40. North Manchester ended the Wabash cage season with a 42 to 37 score, and then went on to win the sec- tional. Fred Parks was selected on the third team - All-Conference. These boys will help make up the varsity next year. Taking into consideration the fact that the starting five was constantly changing, the Papooses finished the season with a fine record of 5 wins and 14 losses. The Scalpers had one meet under their belts at this time, when they met and defeated Chester Township on the Chester oval. Wabash collected all but three first places, one of which was the half-mile relay. The local thinly-clads won this event easily but were disqualified for cutting in too sharply on the first turn. From the records of past seasons and the first warm-up meet with Chester, Wabash is expecting big things from Dave Ford, who won the high hurdles and broad jump, placed second in the low hurdles, and ran on the winning mile relay team: also Iim Fred Parks, a blue-ribbon winner in the century and 220-yard dashes, a second place winner in the shot put, and lead-off man on the half-mile relay team: Iim Cairns, who won first place in the high jump and low hurdles and also ran on the half-mile relay: and Iack Sullivan, ace long-distance runner who coasted to a win in the mile and half-mile runs and then anchored the mile relay team. Other local cinderrnen who are looking good are: Burton Iones, dash man: Ierry Rife, dash man: Charles Dwyer, broad jumper: Dalton Barnett, quarter- rniler: Darrel Sanders, pole vaulter and middle distance man: Dean Cassiday, Iim Bean, Iim Hickey, Iohn Oldenkamp, and Iim Emrick, long and middle distance aspirants: and Bud Fox, shot putter. With this squad, helped by freshmen tracksters and ably piloted by Coach Austin Holloway, Wabash High School should be backing a better than aver- age cinder team for the 1947 season.
