Many wakeful nights vere spent in planning and re-planning a page whose pictures hadn ' t developed or hadn ' t been taken. Her time was spent in trips to the office to call Chicago about covers, keeping check on the various editors, and night after night listen to our ideas, and, whether they were good or bad, she was always ready to soothe our irate minds or to offer some sound advice. We thank you, Miss Jones, for without you there would ' have been no 1944 Sycamore. CAPTAIN: George Parks. 1943 SEASON Wabash High School ' s 1943 football season got under wajr last fall with some 30 or 40 pigskin enthusiasts answering Coach John Tatum ' s initial call to practice. Fol- lowing two weeks of intensive work-outs under the boiling sun, the newly-organized group of candidates, with little experience and only the expert guidance and patience of their coach, embarked on the trail of competition. Let ' s go back to one Friday evening in August, 1943, and follow the Apaches ' schedule in the succession of encounters as they were played. Meeting Kokomo ' s Wildcats on Alumni Field in the season ' s opener, the Scalpers found weight and experience against them and consequently bowed to the Kats by a score of 7 to 0. However, the following week, they had gained confidence in their ability and managed to emerge deadlocked 14-all with a defiant Elwood team that snatched victory from the Orange and Black gridders with a last quarter pass inter- ception. That tilt was the first of six Central Indiana Conference games. Torrents of rain and a slippery, soggy Kriegbaum Field at Huntington Provided the scene of the Apaches ' next encounter, but in spite of the fact, they pounded their way to the season ' s initial victory by a 7 to score. Seemingly unable to remain either in the loss or the win column, the Scalning eleven was intent upon tying ball games and the following week Virgil Sug Risner and 10 other boys from Warsaw came back in the second half of a hectic ball game to tie the score at 12-all after the Apaches had chalked up what they thought a comfortable lead. The season ' s second loss came on the home field when the Plymouth Pilgrims went wild with passes to down the Apaches 26 to 14 while Captain and half back George Parks sat on the bench, nursing a bad cold. That fracas also marked the final showing of Bob Mike Christie, veteran end and center, who was inducted into the army a few days later. Somewhat relieved of overconfidence and realizing that they had only one win to their credit to show for five games of play, the Scalpers settled down to business the following week and went to town as they trampled a fighting Peru Tiger eleven by a 13 to 6 score. Then after a week ' s rest because of an open date on the schedule, they returned to Peru and again came through with flying colors and a 13 to triumph. The final game of the sea.=on with Marion ' s Giants, although it ended in a 12 to 12 tie, was a heart-breaker for the WHS eleven for they had confidence of defeating their southern rivals, who had won only one game of their seven scheduled encounters. But the Giants were spirited as never before and the Apaches had to rely on the brilliant passing tactics of Joe Weaver in order to tie the score in the closing minutes of play, thus climaxing a season ' s campaign of three victories, two defeats, and three ties. Honorable mention honors went to Don Tyte, Elbert Fingerle and George Rockwell. Parks, a senior, also was elected captain of the 1943 WHS squad. Shockey graduated at the end of the first semester and is now a member of the Navy, while Christi e was in- ducted into the Army, and Fingerle, the Navy. Rockwell and Tyte are in their senior year, although the former already is a member of the armed forces, awaiting call. Three of the above-mentioned boys, Christie. Parks and Shockey, were voted members of the all-state football squad. Christie polled a berth on the fourth team, while the latter two were honorably mentioned. Warsaw put the skids under the Apaches the following week by a 05 to 27 score, but they came back to defeat Monticello 38 to 37 and Elwocd 28 to 26 in succession before once more falling into a losing slump. Peru and Sheridan handed them their next losses, the Tigers coming to Wabash in a return engagement and defeating the Apaches 39 to 23, while the Blackhawks bounded through to a 40 to 34 triumph on their own court. Then after turning back Marion 28 to 27 in an overtime encounter that marked the closing of the home season the following week, it looked as if the Scalping quintet would once more come to life as it did earlier in the campaign, but Burris of Muncie ' s towering Owls put a stop ' to things with a 42 to 31 victory and the Apaches finished the remainder of the season losing to Tipton 49 to 38, Rochester 56 to 44j Plymouth 34 to 29, South Side of Fort Wayne 56 to 30, and Kokomo, runner-up in the state tournament, by a score of 55 to 38. Although the 1943-44 basketball squad encountered difficulties throughout its campaign, two of its most outstanding members, John Rorkwell and Joe Weaver, wero given honorable mention on the Central Indiana all-conference cage team by a poll of coaches. Both Weaver, a junior, and Rockwell, a sophomore, will return to the sport next season. Major W sweaters for the 1943-44 season were awarded to Ben Gurtner, John Rockwell, and Jim Sam Butterbaugh, manager. BASKETBALL The fellows who have to endure most grueling workouts, because they have to play against both the varsity and freshman squads, turned in a fairly good season this year. The Papooses showed fine mental, as well as physical ability on the court this season, and we are looking forward to a successful season from these boys in the next couple of years.
