The calm which prevails in the above picture of the Sycamore Staff gives a false impression of the publication of the book. A truer picture would be one with Jeanie Walter, our business manager, and Lavita Malott, our circulation manager, scurrying about with strictly mercenary plans brewing, our photographers snapping pictures continually, our typists doing their thankless jobs, or Miss Jones, our sponsor, staying after school to listen patiently and sympathetically to our plans to make this the best issue of the Sycamore. SYCAMGRE STAFF , Bill Owens, now helping Uncle Sam, has been for the past four years the efficient staff photographer for the Sycamore. We're sorry that future staffs won't have Bill back of them as we have had. We'll be proud of this book when it comes off the press, even if every picture is upside down or if we do look cross-eyed in our pictures 5 so scribble your name on the Hy-leaf. This is your book! They had com- pleted one of their most successful seasons since 1937, when they came through with eight wins and two defeats. This year the book showed them the victors of seven encoun- ters and two setbacks. They had also accomplished another task- they had defeated their three greatest rivals, Huntington, Peru and Marion-for the first time since 1935. The first fracas when the lid blew up on the grid season was with the Kokomo Kats, a non-con- ference scrap. That game went to the Kats, 8 to 0, but it gave the Apaches the needed fight that spurred them on in their CIAC games with Elwood, winning 19 to 65 Huntington's Vikings, 43 to 6, VARSITY FOOTBALL and Plymouth, 12 to 6. Their next battle was with their spirited rivals, the Peru Tigers, who al- ways put up a good fight for the Apaches. The Wabash team came out6 on the top of this fracas, 7 to . After winning these four con- ference battles, they were ready for the Warsaw Tigers, one of the state's toughest teams, The Tigers held the winning cards, 7 to 0. The Wabash Scalpers were downheart- ed over giving up the conference title, but kept the grid season col- orful for the fans by defeating their remaining rivals-Rensselaer, 20 to 6, Columbia City, 26 to 0, and homecoming foes, the .Marion Giants, 12 to 0. Tatum had started out with only two veterans, but had built up a team with a tight defense and a clever offense that had what it took to make such a startling record. When it came to the all-state teams. Harold Carney rated as a right guard on the third team and Rich Jefferson made honor- able mention as a right halfback. These gridders received silver foot- balls for their conference stand- ings. 1 The next football season will find most of last year's gridders gone -probably. waging an offensive on another field. Tatum will be left again with only a few starters, but with his knowledge and the talent on the second team of' last year, should be able to produce a win- ning aggregation. The men of the gridiron will miss Fred Hoefer, Harold Carney, Harold Farthing, Bob Herrell, Ray Alexander, Rich Jefferson, Frank Hettmansperger and Don Baer on the starters. Their berths will be hard to fill and football candidates have a. goal to work toward in view of replacing these players. Row one: Asst. ' Tacklei GEORGE ROCKWELL GEORGE 'PARKS JIM BRILL Tackle Fullback Manager Despite the loss of Kenneth Gun- ning, hardwood squire, to the navy and a season's record showing 14 losses over four wins, the Wabash Apache basketball aggregation came through the Sectional tourna- ment by defeating a powerful Cen- tral of North Manchester team by a single point, Don Winterrowd, a Somerset star who came to the Indian tribe in mid-season, scored that winning point to give Wabash the victory, the same fellow who saved their hides in another sectional .game with South Whitley, when, he broke loose to score in the second over-timing. In Regional play at Marion, they slumped before a determined Ko- komo Kat tribe which met Marion in the Regional. finals and was cle- feated. The fact that Wabash had enter- tained a losing schedule for the entire season and then bucked up to grab the Sectional is a discussion topic that still goes on. ' VARSITY BASKETBALL ' In the hardwood opener, Wa-' bash entertained the Central team and grabbed a 24 to 20 victory. It looked as if they were getting oH to a good start, The Apaches played host to an-Alexandria crew and set them back 41 to 34. The Vikings of Huntington, who had not won a game prior to this tilt, welcomed the Wabash team. The locals fell before the Vikings 28 to 25 and from there went into a slump, losing to Warsaw, 25 to 23, Monticello, 42 to 23, and El- wood, 42 to 31. Linlawn's Pirates came to the Apache hardwood and were thrown back 38 to 23 by the Gunning crew. Back into the los- ing slump with defeat from the hands of the Peru Tigers, 25 to 15, and South Side, Fort Wayne, 42 to 22. A fourth win came for Wabash when they greeted the Sheridan Blackhawks. The most powerful rivals were yet to come. Scott Fisher's Burris of Muncie Owls waged a battle here, and they came out on top, 29 to 19. On to Tipton, where the Apaches lost 26 to 18 and the state's top team for a time during the season, the Rochester Zebras, who undermined the locals, 43 to 21. The remain- der of the season showed them los- ing to Plymouth, 39 to 323 Wina- mac, 33 to 263 Peru, 35 to 30, the Marion Giants, 51 to 29, and the Kokomo Kats, 31 to 26. C. Glen Coolman became squire of the team late in the season, and worked with them the few weeks before the Sectional. Change of mentors during the season might ordinarily prove hazardous, but it did not seem to conform to the Apache rule which destined the Wabash team to dominate the Sec- tional tourney. Three of the first team men won't 'be around next year-Darrell Cassidy, Harold Farthing and Don Baer. The Apaches will miss these hardwood men. Next year's coach will have on hand a supply of ex- perienced, capable players and the season of basketball will no doubt hold the kind of competition fans like to observe.
