Thomson was employed as an agent to traverse the Wabash Valley, and to present the claims of the effort to the friends of education at home, and Edmund O. Hovey to solicit aid to the East. The agency at the East was prosecuted at first under much dis- couragement, owing chiefly to the embarrassed pecuniary condition of the cities, and a general prostration of business.
