In October l977,.after axttenif ing Surface Warfare Officer School in San Diego. f 21- Nr: reported for his first shipboard tour on USS GALLA. QMSO-4891, which served as Engineer Officer and Acting Executive Officer. Earning his designation HS H Sllffiiff' Warfare Officer in 1979. His next served on USS FOX CCG-335 homeport in Salt Diego, Ca. Being Missile Fire Control Officer and later as Navigator. Leaving the USS FOX, LCDR KIRKLAND was assigned as a combat System Instructor and Surface Warfare Training Officer at Fleet Training Group, in San Diego. He conducted underway training for over seventy U.S. Navy Coast Guard and foreign navy ships. Following this tour, he attended Surface Warfare Depart- ment Head School in Newport Rhode Island. Graduating with distinction in May 1984. In July 1984, he reported to USS RAMSEY in San Diego for his first Department Head tour as Weapons Officer. LCDR Kirkland left USS RAMSEY in 1986 and reported to USS TUSCALOSSA CLST-11871, where he served as First Lieutenant until May 1987. Then Engineer Officer until November 1988 during this tour earned the designation Qualified for Command at Sea. I In December 1988 LCDR Kirkland reported to USS CARI YINSON QCVN-705 in Alameda, California. Serving as As: srstant Combat Direction Center Officer until his selection to Executive Officer School in September 1989. ln Dece b m er 1989, he reported aboard USS WABASH QAOR-59 as FXQCU- tive Officer.
