FIRST CLASS OFFICERS Terry M. Murphy Robert J. Morris Gerald R. Manley

Page 32 text:

From that first sweltering August day when we entered Linit ' s Gates to that Late chilly December night when we resolved to preserve the ratline, the Class of 1981 has carved a path which has been frought with both exhileration and frustration. As rats, we discovered that VMI classes generally run in cycles ranging from the conservative to the radical. Our Dykes ' class was definitely wilder, more independent and more aggressive than most, and we have essen- tially lived up to that tradition. This is evident in such activities as our carefully coordinated commando raid on Mary Baldwin, and the spontaneously planned football confiscation from the Hokie rangers. Yet, in many respects, the Class of 1981 Is a unique class. We share the fun-filled memories of Zollomans, Goshen, a nd Twin Falls, and the fond memory of our brother rat Ron McCulloch. As the ruling authority in barracks, we have tenaciously fought to perserve the time-honored traditions and challenges of the ratline. The class has demonstrated that in fluxuating and uncertain times, it can still retain some control over the changes which occur in the Corps ' life. In this manner, we have insured the perpetuation of our most cherished asset- The Honor System. All of these diverse elements have combined to make our class- the Class of 1981 -one of the most spirited and unified groups of individuals to have passed through these hallowed arches. Of this rare distinction, we are terribly, arrogantly and righteously proud. We leave the Institute with both fond and bitter memories, distant and close friendships, and irrevocably and glorious- ly secure in the knowledge that our next view of barracks will be from the balcony of Moody Hall.

Not to go uptown with K.C. on a Wed, after- noon when you have obligated yourself as an example of cadetship to a group of impressionable youths? Or could you have learned just how much money a person can spend in only a short trip to the X and how funny gas can be at 1:30 A.M. Yet much more impor- tant then what you have learned, is what you have taught. Your lessons in kindness and caring, generosity and fortitude will live as examples of your Jewish heri- tage and ethics. Good luck. God Bless and you should ' ve been a Rabbi. D.C.A ' 81 I couldn ' t have done it without you Dad. Mom, Uncle Al , roomates, all my faithful pen pals. K.C, Bob and of course Tam, Shalom! In his silent manner, he was a leader, a man who through his magnanimity and his humality, sat head and shoulders above the rest of us. When feeling low, he would merely reflect, I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me (Phil 4:13); he seldom displayed dis- contentment in a world which nearly always pinned some one down. Lynnie ' s humor was singularly hilar- ious, and he relished all opportunities to rib any of us- Ray, Randy, Gillesppe, Bobby T., Waggs, PBD, and the whole Bio Clan - but how he withstood our abuse. I ' ll never know. (It must have taken all of Palm Parlor ' s ice cream to keep him cool.) For all who befriended Lyne. that fact remains an honor they will long remember. I pray I will remain lifelong friends with the brother rat I most respect. DOT DYKES1978: Stu Gitchell 1984: Calvin Buchanan Scott Doody Thomas Gerard Albro Bro. Brobo. Slam. Bert. After initial successes with both, Bro has slipped and be- come a true Keydet in every sense of the word. Though no bookworm, Tom has occasionally hit the Dean ' s List and landed an academic scholarship. This is despite sports and near-perfect attendance at parties throughout the Commonwealth. He makes his rounds in an enviable fashion but don,t tell him because his most gracious gift is that outgoing yet humble personality. He exumes class and style. Obviously the military means little to Tom. A four private and a bottom 10% finisher at Camp reflect his motivation. His immediate future looks like grad school but watch it! Unleshing him on a coed cam- pus could be the undoing of our otherwise success- ridden cohort. JFF A person is only as successful as those he sur- ronds himself with. Thank with all my love Mom and Dad. TGA DYKES 1978; Rick Wetherill 1984: Dan Grillone
