From that first sweltering August day when we entered Linit ' s Gates to that Late chilly December night when we resolved to preserve the ratline, the Class of 1981 has carved a path which has been frought with both exhileration and frustration. As rats, we discovered that VMI classes generally run in cycles ranging from the conservative to the radical. Our Dykes ' class was definitely wilder, more independent and more aggressive than most, and we have essen- tially lived up to that tradition. This is evident in such activities as our carefully coordinated commando raid on Mary Baldwin, and the spontaneously planned football confiscation from the Hokie rangers. Yet, in many respects, the Class of 1981 Is a unique class. We share the fun-filled memories of Zollomans, Goshen, a nd Twin Falls, and the fond memory of our brother rat Ron McCulloch. As the ruling authority in barracks, we have tenaciously fought to perserve the time-honored traditions and challenges of the ratline. The class has demonstrated that in fluxuating and uncertain times, it can still retain some control over the changes which occur in the Corps ' life. In this manner, we have insured the perpetuation of our most cherished asset- The Honor System. All of these diverse elements have combined to make our class- the Class of 1981 -one of the most spirited and unified groups of individuals to have passed through these hallowed arches. Of this rare distinction, we are terribly, arrogantly and righteously proud. We leave the Institute with both fond and bitter memories, distant and close friendships, and irrevocably and glorious- ly secure in the knowledge that our next view of barracks will be from the balcony of Moody Hall.
