I STAR OF THE NORTH VIRGINIA MINNESOTA JUNE 1925 Dorothy Gish and Alice Lackrle, 2L more the only Minnesota students who p ssed the Remington Portable test in Mas 1924 There were only forty seven in the United States who passed the test he requirements for which were that thc typlst should write at the rate of at least sixty words a minute for ten minutes without an error Dorothy m de an avel 1,.,e of sixty flve words and Alice an aver a e of sixty three Each winner was pre sented with a Remington Portable given by the Remington Typewriter Company Dorothy won an honor again this year when she won first in the district contest held at Biwabik April eighteenth. Dorothy won first bv writin, sixty-nine and eight tenths words per minute while Biwabik won second with sixty-five and five-tenths words per minute. Amanda Fossum won first place 1n thc district Shorthand Contest at Blwablk bs making a grade of ninety nine percent pe fet in the transcription of two letters of two hundred words each which Mere dmc tated at the rate of eighty words pez minute Dorothv and Amanda entered their re spectlve divisions at the state contest at Minneapolis in May Besides the special awards other mem bers of the advanced typing and short hand classes have won various certificat s Amanda Fossum and Inga Komulainen have 'each won 100 word transcription certificates. Each typewriter company offers various awards for which the mem- bers of the class may try. STAR OF THE NORTH, VIRGINIA, MINNESOTA, JUNE 1923 I VlfglDl3 Hrgh School was again rep resented by a cattle ludgmg team last sum mer Although the team composed I Felix Nylund and Carl Borgeson dld not have the success of former years neverthe less one of the members Carl Borgeson was chosen as one of the boys to represent St Louis County at the state fair The boys were chosen after a series of trial meets conducted by Harold Aase Bows and Girls Club Leader of St Louis Coun ty The other member of the team was Iver Eklund a student at Grand Forks Agriculture School and a resident of B1 wablk fhe team did well at the state falr although it dldnt win any prizes In the Calf Club Contest Virginia Nel son of Virginia High School won first prize and the champlonshlp at the St Louis County Fair She was awarded fifth place at the state fair For winning these two places Virginia received a free trip to the National Dairy Show at Milwaukee Boys Take Second Place m Stock Juclgmg Contest On May 7 a team composed of three Senior High school boys Carl Borgeson Ray Westby Louis Tuomi with Milton I. Anderson as alternate accompanied hv their coach Mr. Nelson went down to thc North Eastern Experimental Station at Duluth where they took part in the district general stock judging contest At this contest there were seven teams represented. In competition with six other teams from the district our team took se- cond place. ln individual judging Louis Tuomi placed third highest and Ray Westby placed sixth among the twenty-one in- dividual contestants.
