AS SEEN THROUGH THE C R Y S T A L BALL D Ql ' lET! Concentrate deeper, deeper. The class of ' 35 will soon appear. Assuredly, eminent teachers, scientists, artists, and executive secretaries will abound in multitudes in this i rou]) with a tjenerous pro])()rtion of Ph.D. ' s. The mist is clearing. The eil is lifting. Who are these corpulent women, wearing arch-jireserver shoes, who are conu ' ng into focus? The class of ' 35 in later years. How wonderful it is that the future is unknown ! That tall green and yellow modernistic building in the background, is that the lMui)ire State lUiilding? The College! l ut where is the expansive canii)us? Ah! yes. I see it. that green border ])ainted at the base. If 1 could onlv see those individualistic components of that most intelligent, emotionally mature, imposing class of nineteen hundred and thirty-five about their everyday purstu ' ts. The ball has become hazy. A scene is being uncovered. . crowded street corner. . frantic woman is standing in a soap box shouting Art insurance, buy now! .Special rates for Indians! A free portrait with every policy! The scene draws nearer. Alas! It is .Sue I ' ettv Rex. the dignified president of the class of ' 35. The scene begins to ([uiver. With a burst another takes its place. The aromas of NH. pervades the atnuisjjhere. A man and woman are talking earnestly. The conversation — atoms versus molecules. The lecturers. Mr. and Mrs. Medicio (Mary Brooks). The students — gently snoring. The placid countryside conu ' s iiUo view. Who iiUerrupts that trained agriculturist at his work? A woman dressed in blue with a huge brass star and Oscar Truant by the hand is she and known as ( )tTicer Edith Gilmau. Faint nmsic strikes my ear. That divine extra aganza. The Prison Song, played by Madame Cecilia ' I ' atarsky and her experienced delin- i|uent svmi)honic orchestra, is carried by the evening breeze. • 20 •
