fdtcda RECORD 19 5 4 PUBLISHED BY THE SENIOR CLASS VINELAND HIGH SCHOOL VINELAND . NEW JERSEY fyruun the jjil i off Candid. FOREWORD Time is relative. If we could measure time by the happiness we've had, by the new ex- periences, by the friends we've made—then the four years that we have spent in high school would weigh heavily on the scales of time. At first, all our memories were bright and clear like photos in the album of our mind; but then, as years went by, they faded and grew dim. Faces and places once familiar became en- veloped in the fog of time. It is our hope that the RECORD will bring back those memories whenever you open its pages in the future. We all know that ''time marches on,'' but we some- times like to forget about time. In the scenes pictured here, your friends will remain eternally young. People change, you say — yes, though not very much. The habits, manner- isms, and character traits that we develop in school stay with us. It is hard to change a negative if the picture was taken incorrectly. So it is with us—we too are hard to change. The basic ideas and ways of thinking that we acquire in our youth remain with us. When we take a picture, we sometimes find that it takes a great amount of focusing to find the truly significant object. Now, it is more im- portant than ever before that we have a set of true values that cannot be shaken by the things that may come. We must all take time to think about what we want our life to hold. The time has come for us to develop from a mere negative into a finished print—from teen- ager into adult. Having learned that knowl- edge is worth nothing unless it is used for the good of everyone, we now venture forth to take our place in the world. jjj. DEDICATEE Thank you Mr. Robinson for— —your constant work for all of our class projects —teaching us to think for ourselves —guiding us when the time came to make the many important decisions —brightening our days with your clever remarks —working with us on the first community prom —injecting your personality into our Senior year, and making it a wonderful year to remember. Pres. FRESHMAN CLASS The freshmen entered the halls of V.H.S. with little knowledge of what was in store for them. Like someone just starting out in the hobby of photography, they had to be acquainted with the apparatus in order to start working. They were a little timid at first, but soon approached this new life with unmatched eagerness and enthusiasm. Be- fore long, with the help of class leaders and teachers, they had mastered the first step. Things were beginning to click! 42 APPRENDI B. Mayerfeld: L. DePalma: N. Archetto. Troas.; G. Unsworth. JUNIOR JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS R. Conto. V. Pro .; C. Clark. Pres.; Mrs. Adamo, Advisor; R. Kupelian, Treas.; A. Pettisani, Sec. CLASS The juniors endeavored to complete the picture. Sometimes their work carried them late into the night. However they still had time for clubs and sports. Not one day did they lag behind. The negative was develop- ing into a still clearer picture. Of course, there were times when outside help was gladly accepted. By working with others their field of friends was broadened. Then one day it was there—a completed picture of healthy, intelligent, and understanding young people. There was still time to trim off the ragged edges and touch it up. And it would not be laid aside and forgotten, but improved more and more each year. 48 ADAMO 1ST ROW: R. Romeo; R. Botbyl. Sec.: I. Ziegler. V. Pres.; Mrs. Adamo; R. Cento, Pres.; C. Barrett. Beginning with their annual candle-lighting ceremony in October, the Council is always striving to better the school and further the interests of the students. It is in charge of the varied drives in which V.H.S. participates, such as Heart Fund, Christmas Seals, and many others. In addition to this responsibility. Student Council also sells book covers, pen- nants, and booster buttons, which help to retain that traditional V.H.S. spirit. Of course. Miss Sternberg, the advisor, is synonymous with Student Council. Without her help and support many projects would COUNCIL not have been completed. Student Council members have the privi- lege of attending several conferences throughout the year Here they listen to other schools' views and opinions and can compare them. The Council also sends out a bulletin each Monday morning for discussion in homeroom meeting. In this way, every student may learn what has been brought up in the pre- vious Student Council meeting. Considering all these things, it is evident that this worthwhile organization certainly merits the respect and cooperation of every student. MISS STERNBERG The expert guidance and assistance of Miss Sternberg in both our classes and our Council activities has indeed proved to be invaluable. Many of our goals have been attained by her willingness to undertake the responsibility of extra work. SENIOR RECORD 1ST ROW: W. DeWinnie; G. Cascarolla: S. Baer; T. Buchholz; Mr. Kammer; D. RECORD SENIOR RECORD It was on© of the greatest honors that we had ever experienced when we found that we had been chosen to serve on the staff of the yearbook. Here was something completely different, as we were yet to find out, and it promised to be one of the hardest projects that any of us had ever tackled. The first few meetings acquainted us with the work that was in store for us. Then we began to start the actual foundation work in which we had to make major decisions, remembering at all times that v e were just a small portion of the Senior Class, representing them and would they ap- prove. Different committees were as- sembled at this time and the work piled up quickly. Whether you were on the advertising, business, or just writing end of the production, you had your hands full and there was never a dull moment. Sometimes we became a bit disillusioned, but with Mr. Kammer's reassuring advice, everything seemed to come out fine. Writing a character sketch of all the seniors seemed to be very difficult as each write-up had to typify that one and only person we were describing. This along with the pictures, clubs, underclassmen, and all the other things, went together to make our Senior RECORD. Well, the dead- line was met and all the worries and joys experienced will never let us for- get the pleasure we had serving on the 1954 Yearbook Staff. SENIOR PLAY CAST 1ST ROW: M. Kamban; I. This group composes the club known as Pegasus or Boy's Public Speaking. This organization furthers the aims of those interested in elocution and gives them the opportunity to speak before an audience. The boys are di- rected by Mr. Lipartito, who certainly is invaluable in teaching them the fun- damentals of pronunciation and expres- sion. Their annual Contest, held in March, is an example of the excellent training which this club provides for those interested. THALIA Thalia, better known as the Girls' Public Speaking Contest is one of the oldest organizations in Vineland High School. Under the expert guidance and training of Mrs. Bessie Weylman, sponsor, the club presents the annual Public Speaking Contest in which eight of the members vie in friendly rivalry for top honors. Their selections are of humorous or dramatic content. Impar- tial judges award medals to the three top speakers and a certificate of honor- able mention to the fourth winner. This club which encourages the art of public speaking, offers its members greater understanding and appreciation of dra- matic arts. ________ 1ST ROW: M. Thoma ; G. Sharwell; G. Pit ]; J. Casella; J. HONOR SOCIETY LIBRARY COUNCIL This organization, one of the most selective in the school, has not yet been able to fulfill its quota of members. The four ideals rep- resented by the members are Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service. To become a member of Honor Society, a stu- dent must have all of the afore said qualities plus an average not below 85. Advising this group are two faculty members, Miss Eliza- beth Ann Mulford and Mr. Floyd Nasser. Inductions are held twice yearly, in the fall and the spring. Students are eligible for induction in the spring of their junior year. This organization has for an adviser our librarian, Mrs. Marion Starkey. It is a serv- ice organization that keeps the students of V.H.S. supplied with books. The Library Council does a large amount of work which is never recognized by the students. The girls who belong to this organization give up all their study halls to help Mrs. Starkey. The assistants arrange the books and see that the library is kept neat. They attend state conventions each year in various parts of New Jersey. Their work in the library includes keeping the library clean, circula- ting books, typing, and filing. MUSIC CLUB The Music Club, a combination of all of the musical organizations in the school, is one of the largest and most outstanding organizations in the school's major activities. We will always remember the Christmas Dance featuring the V.H.S. Dance Band, which is spon- sored by the Music Club. Everyone is very proud of the wonderful performance of the orchestra, the Mixed Chorus, and the Girls' Glee Club at the Spring Concert. The Annual Band Concert, also sponsored by the Music Club, is a well-polished outcome of all of the band s hard work. Students participating in any of the musical organizations in the school are entitled to membership in the Music Club. Meetings of the club are high- lighted by guests who entertain the members construc- tively in the field of music. The club has brought many students to appreciate and enjoy music that they may have otherwise ignored. The students owe much to the directors of the club, Miss Julia Cummings, Mr. Franklin Astor, and Miss Beatrice Stern, who have given up much of their time to make this organization the great success that it is. In order to be a mem- ber of this club, a boy has to receive a letter in one or more major sports. The main idea of the Monogram Club is to have all those who have participated in a sport to belong to one organization. Under Mr. DiTomo's spon- sorship, the club has been of great benefit to the school. It has presented the school with many valuable gifts such as a dia- thermic machine for the treatment of injuries which might result. This worthwhile organization, headed by their chief, Mrs. Mae Maruffi, handles the school traffic. The president. Anita Kaplan, calls together a meeting of all the members of the Honor Patrol and Traffic Squad every second week. The members of this large and important organization both discuss and work out problems to minimize impending chaotic traffic conditions in the halls. They are continuously at work preventing all stu- dents from wandering aimlessly through the halls during classes. This organization sponsors the much-enjoyed Valentine Semi- Formal each year. 67 SCRIBBLERS 1ST ROW: Miss Epstein; M. Thomas. Treas.; T. Buchholz. Pres.; G. Sharwoll. V Pros.; M. Huntress. At Christmas time the members deck the halls with colorful symbols of the holiday season. Miss Strobel and her artists are under- taking a new project—they are painting on silk. Each year the Art Club members take a trip to the Philadelphia Art Museum or some other place of artistic interest. This year we find a new and different club added to our many. The Scribblers are a group organized by Miss Epstein for the pur- pose of improving and encouraging creative writing. The little group is off to a wonder- ful start by distributing The Scribblings, a newspaper composed and edited by the club to present their work to the school. The char- ter members have also started things toward the right goal by making it mandatory for each member to bring some work to each meeting. 68 1ST ROW: S. Wernicoff; M. Abruscalo. TOWN MEETING The Cap and Dagger Dramatic Club, under the capable direction of Misses Carmella Di Matteo and Lorraine Mariani, is always busy with its many activities. Besides the acting opportunities, the club welcomes those in- terested in the many backstage jobs. This year’s Christmas program, The Search for the Holy Grail, and the spring play, Green Light, received much praise for their out- standing performances. Skits and other dra- matic pieces are presented at each meeting. The club also sponsors trips to see profes- sional plays during the year. The purpose of Junior Town Meeting is to discuss current world and local problems, and to create, in teenagers, an awareness of their political surroundings. Miss Anne Ostrander is the faculty advisor for this or- ganization. Once a month, a discussion is held on the air, in which students debate problems of the day. 1ST ROW: V. Goodman; M. Kamban. FRENCH CLUB Meeting in the homes of its various members, the French Club creates a feeling of fellowship, in French, plus giving the second and third year students an opportunity to use what they have learned in school in a social manner. The monthly meetings are planned by the executive com- mittee with the help of Mrs. Mildred Donaghay and Miss Ann Dallago. These are then presented in French. Through the efforts of student committees, interesting games, plays and songs are presented. The annual Christmas party, with the exchange of gifts and a visit by Pere Noel”, is the highlight of the year. ITALIAN CLUB The regular meetings of the Italian Club are held on the third Friday of each month. Composed of students who are taking Italian for their second or third years, this organization pre- sents various musical programs during its meetings. Miss Mendico, sponsor of the club, has been trying to buy Italian records for the club so they can be played during the meetings. During the year the club sends a Care package to a needy family in Italy. A Christmas party is also held, and in the spring, holds a pizza party for its members. LATIN CLUB The Latin Club, with Mrs. McMicking behind the wheel, is a very interesting club in V.H.S. At each of the monthly meetings, the members play Latin games. The aim of the Latin Club is to further an interest in the language. The new members are usually initiated in the fall. A person who has completed both courses which are offered may continue to be a member of this club as long as he wishes. SPANISH CLUB Buenos dias senores y senoritas” is the cheerful greetings of Miss Adamo, Spanish Club advisor. A picture of gay Spain enters the minds of the members as they glance around 108 at the Spanish decorations. Among the many social and educational activities enjoyed by the group are the Spanish movies, skits, and imaginery tours of Latin America. A skating party, swimming party and picnic are also sponsored by the club. Highlighting the year is the Thanksgiving dance with the breaking of the pinata, and Miss Adamo's awarding of a Spanish made prize. HOME ECONOMICS CLUB 1ST ROW: B. Kroelinger; P. Hines. Treas.; S. Advised by Mrs. Weylman and Miss Lascari, the girls under- take several activities throughout the year. The sale of red and gray souvenir dolls and the annual Mother and Daughter Party are among the projects planned and carried out by the club. A fashion show is also given, in which the girls model the clothes which they have made. The Future Farmers of America, under the guidance of Mr. Bach, is one of the more active organizations in the school. Every stu- dent who studies agriculture is in this nation- wide organization. Each member is required to raise a project which is usually a common farm product. Every year, the F. F. A. travels to points of interest. Among these places are the Harrisburg Farm Show, the Mid-Atlantic Farm Show, and the New York Farm Market. The boys have also organ- ized a basketball team to play in the F. F. A. league. 74 F. F. Its purpose is to help pre- pare our future secretaries for their chosen career. Guest speakers are often provided at the monthly meetings to advise the girls on good grooming. Under the leadership of Mrs. Shorten, they also receive helpful hints pertaining to correct office procedure. Contests pertaining to the future work of a secretary are sponsored by the club, as well as other things of interest and help to the girls. This worthwhile club quietly works dili- gently all year making things for charitable uses. Some of the things they make are table favors for the holidays, for shut-ins, Red Cross boxes, etc. Besides their business meetings, they have numerous work shops at which they make all those things with the supervision of their hard-working advisor, Mrs. McMicking. This year, however, with new and added facili- ties, the picture seemed to develop much better. The football team showed a slight improvement by beat- ing Simon Gratz and Pleasantville. We tied Camden and lost the remaining six games against Collingswood, Wood- bury, Atlantic City, Bridgeton, Mill- ville, and Woodrow Wilson. A sum- mer camp was started a week before school began. The idea of this camp was to get the boys better prepared for football season, and to encourage other boys to come out for the sport. When the time came around for the team to elect their cap- tain, they had much debate, but finally decided on three co-captains, Carl Tar- abbio, Bernie Johansen, and Russ Gra- nato. Even though our team's record was below average, let us hope that Vineland's football picture will develop into one of the most powerful in South Jersey. 1ST ROW: R. Paterno: P. Ardito: J. This is the first season of varsity coaching for Norm Walsh, and although he is working with an inexperienced team, one could always expect a well played, close game. The girls defeated Hammonton and were overcome by Glassboro, Sacred Heart and Bridgeton in the beginning of the season. Miss Stern's hopes had been somewhat higher for this mid- winter sport. Somehow, there was sadness in our hearts for we realized that this was to be our last school prom. . . Then the Washington trip. . . How tired we would all be at the end of the day. but hew we still would find energy enough to stay awake practic- ally all night—relating old memories of V.H.S. . . . Commencement rehearsals would begin on our return from the trip. . . Everyone acquiring a tan; and oh! those aching feet. . . Soon the day to which we had been looking forward for four years would arrive—Commencement! Some- how, there would probably be a feeling of sadness, for in our hearts we would realize that V.H.S. really had given us four wonderful years. As we would turn our tassels, tears would come to our eyes, but they would soon be wiped away with the thought of a bright and shiny future which could be in store for the Class of 1954! mm tltUufi. w-e jz dcute THE END . . . Somewhere, today, some of those boys in labor- atories conduct experiments to conquer polio, arthritis, cancer and other dreaded diseases. Oth- ers in industrial laboratories use Kimble high- precision laboratory glassware to penetrate the secrets of the unexplored for the advances in living we will enjoy tomorrow. Between the beginner and the Ph.D., you’ll find Kimble laboratory glassware serving industry, education and science with the degree of preci- sion required by the work at hand.
