In the Fall of 1947 thxrty one trmrd but exclted boys and grrls entered the
portals of Vrncent I-hgh School as the Freshman Class We had three new members
wrth us th1s year James Dav1s, Marllynne 'cott and Avxs Dowler but we unfortu
nately lost Agnes Francls and Rosalee West
We were properly rmtxated mto the school by the Sophomores We enjoyed
thxs party very much and we ll never forget the way some of us were dressed

After a very pleasant vacatxon whrch we all enjoyed, we took one more step up
the ladder of educatxon About the mrddle of the year we garned two new members
and lost four of our fellow classmates Rebecca Collum and Carmellta Smxth
entered our class whrle Lols Perdue Ray dolak Robert Wrllrams and George
Wlllrams left our class Loxs Perdue chose marrlage rather than school George
Wxlhams moved to Canton and Ray Dolak and Robert W11l1ams Jomed the Umted

In October we had our annual Freshman Imtxatxon They were wonderful
sports and all of us enjoyed a lovely trme

We occupled the th1rd of the four steps of educatron when next we entered
school rn the Fall of 1949 The frrst rmportant task before us was to order our
class rrngs Due to delay rn orderxng we recerved them rn February However he
most rmportant task before We Juniors was to earn money to entertaln the Sen1ors
rn the Sprmg The mdustrrous members of our class sold refreshments at half of
all the basketball games whxle the Sen1ors sold at the remaxnmg number Thrs
profxted us about 60 dollars We sold penczls wrth basketball schedules on them
and thxs netted us about four dollars The last of March we sponsored Doc Wrllrams
and Hrs Border Rxders, a radxo show from Wheelmg West Vlrglhla. and at last we
had enough money to g1ve our J'un1oraSen1or banquet 1n honor of the Semors, Aprxl

Sen 101' Prophecy
I Ima Mayle was a nurse 1n the Wh1te Cross Hospltal 1n Columbus Oh1o I was
engaged to B111 Jenk1ns and so declded to go to New York Clty to buy my trousseau
Upon my arrxval at New York I checked m at the Park Plaza Hotel I was very
t1red after my long trxp and after unpackmg my sultcase retlred for the n1ght
The next mormng I decxded to get an early start on my shoppmg At noon wh1le
Waltlng 1n lxne at the cafeter1a I saw someone who looked fam1l1ar I walked closer
to th1s person and to my delxght It was Rebecca Collum She was now 1n New York
workmg as a chorus g1rl 1n a nlght club We had lunch together and talked about our
happy days at V1ncent Hlgh Rebecca was on her vacatlon and was commg home to
Vmcent lhad completed my shopp1ng and so decxded to come w1th her as we were
both very homes1ck
We boarded a tram at Grand Central Statlon and soon arr1ved at Parkersburg
We wanted to see the s1ghts of Parkersburg before gomg to Marxetta and together we
started walkmg when who should we bump 1nto but Carmehta Smlth She had a Job
smgmg 1n the Pe11canN1ghtCIub We also ran mto Della Pyatt who was now the
manager at Murphy s
Rebecca and I then took a bus to Mar1etta Arrxvmg there we saw a huge crowd
surroundmg a platform We wondered what was go1ng on and started to mvesugate
What d1d we see but Wayne H111 gxvlng a campalgn speech He was runnlng for
Republlcan Senator from Ohlo
We were crossmg the street when just m txme Rebecca pushed me out of the way
of a speedmg stock car The drxver was Reg1s Mollohan who raced 1n all the f1rst
class races When I fmally got to the other s1de of the street I saw a cowboy or any
way I thought lt was a cowboy l took a second look and low and behold It was Don
Roberts wxth a beautxful blonde He had been workmg on a Dude Ranch mn Southern
Calxforma and was engaged to the blonde gxrl

wxndow of the S1nger Sewmg Center Why that was Sara Jo Thornber ry We entered
the bu1ld1ng to fmd her talklng to Mary Wentz Sara Jo was Manager of the Sewlng
Center and Mary was here on a VlS1t from Columbus where her husband Hugh
teaches at the Unnlversxty
We boarded a Greyhound bus to Barlow My how that l1ttle town had grown
There was a large restaurant r1ght xn the heart of the town and the former
Seaman and Yost General Store was now a comblnatlon grocery and department
store We were hungry and went mto the restaurant to eat Someone gave me a
slap on the back Turnlng to see who It was I could hardly beheve my eyes to see
Bud Foreman w1th Ins w1fe Ellen Love They were l1v1ng on h1s fathers farm m
whxch he had a partnersh1p I heard a car stop and had to bl1nk my eyes to make
sure I wasn t dreammg It was J1m Prltchett dr1v1ng a new Oldsmob1le and with h1m
was Ray Elder J1m was now 1n the Packard and Oldsmobxle busmess and do1ng very
well for hlmself 1n Cleveland Ray had a Job test1ng mattresses for the E Z Rest
Manufacturmg Company of Tampa Florzda
We started walkmg toward Vlncent when Herbxe Hunter plcked us up 1n hxs new
Pontlac He had a Job wxth the Pontzac Manufacturmg Company ln Marletta He let
us out at the h1gh school where we met Betty Reese Nma Mae Jones and Arlene
Cooper They all looked happy Much to my surprxse the three of them were st1ll
unmarried Betty had a cat and a parrot and worked 1n New York Arlene worked
as a Secretary to the Supermtendent of Parkersburg H1gh School Nxna Mae was a
Prlvate Secretary 1n Washxngton 1 questxoned them about James Maddox and
Mar1lynne Scott It seems James IS the Prxvate Secretary to Robert Taft who IS
Presldent Mar1lynne IS a bra1n spec1al1st now practxcmg 1n Chlcago lll1no1s
We left them and as we entered the gymnaslum who should we meet but yes
Bean1e Barnett and Gerald Orndoff Bean1e IS a teacher and also the coach of the
Loc kland Wayne Hlgh School 1n Cmcmnatx H15 team IS the State Champxons
Gerald IS the Democratxc Senator from Ohxo and It IS rumored that he w11l run for
Presldent next term Gerald showed us a snapshot of Jxm Dav1s He IS now an
Admxral 1n the Navy and marr1ed to Jean They own a home ln Norfolk V1rg1n1a
The next person to greet me was Mrs W1ll1am Sadler the former V1rg1n1a
Mclntlre She and Sam have a 75 acre farm 1n Waterford Vlrglhla told me Helen
Young was marr1ed to T1m Reese and was l1v1ng 1n Dallas Texas
Suddenly we heard a loud bang We all ran to mvestxgate the cause only to
f1nd a car wxth a flat tlre But Walt why the drxver was Cleo Callxhan Wh1le the
boys were f1x1ng the t1re she told us that she had marr1ed B111 Kaneff and they had
three chlldren They l1ved ln Belpre ln a llttle whlte house Cleo showed a news
paper whlch she had read In lt was a plcture of Lesl1e Dalton who IS now a mln
1ster It told of some of the good th1ngs he was do1ng 1n Indxa where he was an
Last but far from least IS Jackle Anderson He IS a Lleutenant ln the Unxted
States Army and has just come home from Okxnawa where he had been statloned
He showed us some of the medals he had rece1ved
I was scheduled to go back to work the next day and had to hurry to catch the
last bus to Columbus As I relaxed agamst the seat I revlewed all the thmgs that had
happened to me that day and knew that l would never forget that reun1on

On August 30 1948 twenty elght of us walked bashfully 1nto the Freshman
room We had two new students enter our class at the beglnmng of the year They
were Elnora Collum and Bxlly Grmmm both of whom are from West Vlrgmxa Mary
Lou Lane wxthdrew from our class about Chrlstmas txme She moved to Marletta and
w1ll contxnue her studles at Marxetta High School
We enjoyed the Freshman lmtlatlon very much even though lt was embarasslng
After a short vacatxon we returned to attempt the next step up the Vmcent I-hgh
School sta1rs of Educatxon We are hopmg that none of us w11l stuznble and fall xnto
the valley of faxlure Although the word Sophomore means wxse and foohsh we
thxnk It sounds xmportant

In order to raxse the funds needed for the annual Junlor Semor Banquet we
have been selllng refreshments at half of the basketball games We sold basketball
schedule penclls but the proflt was small On the flfteenth of December we spon
sored the Sunshlne Boys radlo program
