It is an excellent class for which all of us at Vincennes University are thankful. One of the sad things about a two year college is that about the time we get acquainted with a group of fine students, they are ready to leave us. Yet, the graduates are to be congratulated for achieving another step in their personal development. Americans have always believed in education as the doorway to the future. For most of us no other factor is so decisive to our personal accomplishment. In this generation in which the routine types of jobs are steadily disappearing from the world of work, when even occupational skills are based upon knowledge, those who continue their efforts to learn gain an important advantage. Perhaps the most important contribution of post-high school edu- cation is to give a foundation for future personal growth for educa- tion today has become a lifetime necessity. Those who do not gain that foundation early in life must struggle to recover in their later years or fall steadily behind their colleagues in occupational accom- plishments. Education today is the reservoir out of which leadership makes its contribution. It is the basis for many of life's satisfactions. Therefore, my hope and prayer is that the learning graduates have gained at Vincennes University will serve them well in the years ahead. | hope, too, that every graduate will remember a favorite state- ment of mine they probably have heard several times: that everyone of us have the obligation to develop our talents to the fullest and put those talents in the service of God and man. My sincere best wishes, Issac K. First place finishers of the Bike Race, for the second year in arrow, were the men of Clark Hall. Second place went to Sigma Phi Epsilon while third was captured by Lambda Chi Alpha. Fastest lap honors went to Terry Swain. Rose Heldt gives the winning salute as she crosses the finish line in first place. Larry McGill exuberantly claims first place for Clark Hall. 96 — Bike Weekend Convocations Throughout the year, Student Activities and Community Series works hard to present a diversified program of cultural enrichment for the students of Vincennes University. This year proved no exception as students were entertained by the Harlem Globetrotters, the V.U. Music Theatre Productions, Stan Waterman and the movie ‘The Deep”, and many other fascinating productions. Art Linkletter is best known for his television shows, “People Are Funny” and ‘House Party”, and presented several anecdotes from his book, ‘Kids Say the Darndest Things’. Don McLeod, a mime, presented a series of contemporary sketches along with Macarena, his dancer-partner. The only sports team that has been the subject of two movies and two television series, the Harlem Globetrotters certainly proved why they hold the record for the largest crowd to see pro basketball games indoors. Shake 1887-1978 In September of 1978, the University and the community of Vincennes lost a great educator, patron, and friend — Judge Curtis Grover Shake. A native of Knox County, Judge Shake gave unselfishly of his time in an effort to better the University, Knox County, and all humanity. Some of the positions he held in his lifetime include Knox County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney, United States Commissioner for the Terre Haute Division of the District of Indiana, President of the V.U. Board of Trustees, Indiana State Senator, and Indiana Supreme Court Judge. In May, 1947, he was chosen by President Turman to go to Nuremburg, Germany, as a judge of the U.S. Military Tribunal set up to prosecute Nazi war leaders. Active in community affairs, Judge Shake was instrumental in rescuing Vin- cennes University from a near-fatal financial position in the 1920s. Upon ap- pointment to the Board of Trustees, he began a program of revitalization which provided the basis from today’s present campus. The University and community has prospered from the nurturing efforts of this great man. The tangible results of Judge Shake’s many accomplishments will stand as a lasting tribute to a concerned humanitarian. ATHLETICS The V.U.
