Beckes President During the twenty-four years that Dr. Isaac K. Beckes has been president the growth of Vincennes University is obvious. In 1950, when Dr. Beckes became the administrative head, VU consisted of a single building which housed all elements of the school. In 1953, the University was moved to its present location and its growth is apparent in two ways--increased physical growth and increased educational opportunities. At least twenty-one buildings have been constructed or renovated. These structures became necessary when the number of stu- dents and their need for knowledge in- creased. Dr. Beckes' goal is to provide the knowl- edge--whether academic or vocational--to the students when they need it. During the opening convocation, he told the students: Knowledge is your best investment; it is your most important commodity . He was one of the founding mem- bers and a former president of COHERE, Inc. , the community citizens' group who were responsible, along with Vincennes University, for the establishment of this institution of higher learning in Dubois County, and who have continued to pro- vide financial support during its first four years. One of Jasper's most respected citizens, Mr. Blessinger is remembered as not only a leader of industry, but as an outstand- 182--JASPER CENTER ing humanitarian and devoted churchman. A few of the many causes in which he was deeply interested and gave many hours of hard work are the Boy Scouts, the Society for Crippled Children, and St. Joseph's parish. He also served dutifully in the pro- jects for civic betterment of various ser- vice organizations in the community. The move into the new Jasper Center building in the Spring of 1974, is large- ly due to the work of Mr. Raphael Bles- singer, who died on January 30, 1974. It is to his memory that the Jasper Center yearbook staff dedicates its section of the 1974 LE REVOIR. LO ROR Pee ee aor COHERE, INC. O. LEO BECKMAN President REV. Not only does it provide the student with income during the school year but it provides the community with talent and man- power that would otherwise not be available. Vincennes University - Jasper Center was introduced cooperatively by Vincennes University and COHERE, Inc., in February of 1970. COHERE, Inc. (Committee on Higher Education and Related Events) is a Dubois County citizens action group dedicated to the improvement of educational and cultural enrichment for the area. It was founded by concerned citizens in 1960. It was the feeling of persons involved that a community junior college would be the most feasible institution of higher education for Dubois and surrounding counties. In September, 1970, Vincennes University - Jasper Center opened its doors to students in the area. By Spring of 1974 the Jasper Center was serving 400 students in Dubois, Spencer, Perry, Crawford, Harrison, Pike, and Orange Counties. As a community junior college, Vincennes University - Jasper Center offers two year academic transfer programs, two year terminal programs, and continuing education for area residents. 202--JASPER CENTER COMMENCEMENT, 1974 204--COMMENCEMENT COMMENCEMENT--205 In his commencement address to the 168th grad- uating class of Vincennes University, Dr. OtisR. Bowen, Governor of the State of Indiana, chal- lenged the graduates to get involved in whatever you believe needs to be changed. Leading up to the challenge, the Governor drew a distinction between the terms graduation and commencement. He stated that commencement conveys the idea that whatever accomplishments or failures may be contained within your life prob- ably lie yet before you. You have not graduated out of them, or graduated from them. Instead, he told the largest class to ever be awarded degrees from the institution, You are commencing--com- mencing to face the real world on a toe-to-toe, eye-to-eye basis. In his straight-forward manner, Dr. Bowen said to his audience, The world you are entering neither fears your entry, nor particularly is ready to fall over itself to welcome you. He indicated that the 1974 graduate is better prepared than past graduates--but the problems 206--COMMENCEMENT the present graduate will face have grown, too. But, the problem which Dr. Bowen believes holds the potential to cripple our nation is a growing lack of trust in our public leaders and ba- sic institutions. His remedy for that lack of trust involves first an examination of the processes and institutions to see what merits our trust and what does not. Then we must seek to change that which does not, and by so doing make these processes and institutions again effective tools in their work. It is not enough to only criticize the result. It al- so takes the ability to bring about the practical re- forms. He commented, If you cannot make the proper practical application, all the theoretical knowledge in the world has to await the technician before it is of any real value to mankind. The only practical way for a person to use his the- oretical knowledge in a practical way is to become involved. In the Top Photo, Dr. J. Edward Klinker and Dr. Jack Bottenfield arrange the hood of Dr, Otis R. Bowen who received the honorary degree, Doctor of Human- ities. It took the knowledge, talent, and willing hands of several people to produce the 1974 Le Revoir. For this reason, the last page of the book is devoted to giving rec- ognition to those who helped in any way. David Cripe, who also served as a staff photographer, designed the cover which emphasizes the pioneer attitude toward education that is found at VU. Roger Gribble, who served as assistant editor, not only took a ma- jor portion of the pictures, but also made most of the prints used in the book. Other staff photographers included Lowell Martin, Tom Parrish, and Jim Parker. Dianne Head served as copy writer and when the occasion arose, became the typist. Others who performed a variety of chores--all esential to publica- tion--included Keith Dalrymple, Sue Banton, Tony Puchley, Brucie Hawkins, Sandy Wilson, and Mike Brown. Ann Fierst, Kathy Jo Butcher, and Donna Beekman--Jasper Center students--compiled the material for the Jasper section. Finally, special thanks go to John Kline, Josten American repre- sentative, who did everything he could possibly do to make this book possible.
