The second edition was issued in the spring. The magazine contained poems, essays, short stories, term papers, songs, and original art work by the stu- dents. The Trailblazer, the University newspaper, is pub- lished weekly by the journalism majors at Elihu Stout Ha.l. Since the journalism program began in 1964, The Trailblazer, under the direction of Prof. Fred Walker, jr, has maintained consistently high standards of quality. These standards have yielded, through Spring Semester, 1973, eleven consecutive Associated Collegiate Press All- American Awards, and a total of 14 in the last 15 semesters. The Trailblazer has also been honored in the Indiana Collegiate Press Association's an- nual Newspaper Contest, receiving-among oth- ers-three citations for Best News Story of the Year. However, Prof. Walker says that The Trail- blazer is not published to win awards, but to pro- vide a surging cross-current of communication for the constituent groups of the campus commu- nity, by which the decision makers of the Univer- sity may talk to one another, understand one an- other, know one another. PROGRAM: The program of the Center is a var- ied one. It is under the direction of the Chaplain- Director fRev. Michael jacobs, 1st semester, Rev. Glenn Hamer, 2nd semesterj and the adminis- trative assistant, tDiane Haiem, 1st semester: Vicki Dreiman, 2nd semesterj. They work closely with the Adult Board, made up of representatives from the Associated Churches and the University, and also with a large Student Board. Every Sunday evening at 5 p.m., D.O.C. fDiscussion on Cam- pusj is held at the Center. Topics, chosen by the students, are discussed under the leadership of in- formed consultants. These discussions last one WMFW Tim Hendershot, president, Rev. Michael lacobs, Chaplain Director, 1st sem., Pablo Zelayag Robbie Olson, treasurer. hour. Following this, a snack supper prepared by the students is served. Friday evenings from 10:30 to 12:30 a.m. the Colonial Cavern Coffee House is open in the cellar of the U.C.C.F. Here one finds folk singing, conversation and good fel- lowship, as well as food. Twice monthly a Hap- pening takes place. These, too, are varied- sometimes as social as a wiener roast in the coun- try, and other times as serious as a picture like The Parable. Dialogue groups meet every week. Devotional Breakfasts are also a part of each week's program. Twice a month the Center provides a place for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes to have breakfast meetings. Not a small part of the program is the Community Service Committee. Through this committee, groups work with the orphans at the Orphan's Home, with the Girl's Club, with the Sangralea Valley Project, and many others. The U.C.C.F. sponsors the lighting of the All-Campus Outdoor Christmas Tree. It takes an active part in the life of the Uni- versity Campus. The Center is located at 104 E. Harrison, just across from the University Chapel. The Center is open for the students throughout the week: it is here where they may come for counseling, to study, talk or just relax. Beckes, Vincennes University has grown these past 23 years. His professional guidance and philosophy of education has made VU one of the leading ju- nior colleges in the nation academically and athletically. Dr. Beckes is never too busy to talk to a student with a problem, or to attend a convocation or campus event. He is open-minded when it comes to criticism or praise of any phase of life at the university, and constantly strives to make VU a 208 ,....r-avuig' better place for both the students and the administration. Dr. Beckes believes, A major problem con- fronting all young people is to be a growing per- son and the purpose of education should be to help the young person grow and plan for the con- tinuous development of life. To be the right per- son in college and family, in one's position in the community and nation, is the greatest individual responsibility we have. A Busy President . Wx The often unpublucized members of the faculty are the numerous teaching machines on campus Stephen A. Violante To Stephen A. Violante, who left his native Connecticut and came to Vincennes University in 1960 where he devoted the next 13 years to the betterment of his new-found home, both in the community itself and in the school he served so well, we respectfully dedicate this 1973 issue of Le Revoir. He came to Vincennes to serve as Associate Professor of Business, but titles of Director of the Student Union, General Business Manager, Dean of Ad- missions, Director of Commu- nity Relations and Special Assis- tant to the President at Vincennes University were added to his portfolio. A devoted community citi- zen, Stephen Violante served as president of the Vincennes Ro- tary Chapter, as a director of the Knox County Chamber of Commerce, and he is a mem- ber of the Elks and Masons. Whenever there was a need, Stephen Violante was the one who met that need. When there was no band director, he served in that post. When a host for a group of dignitaries was required, he filled that slot equally well. He could be called upon by any department, and he responded quickly to all. We wish him and his wife, Dorothy, nothing but the best in the future. lllfl 3l iii lljlyll lr' , llff 1 5 , 1 1 , ., l l r l 5 F t If l tvb. t xl 7.511 , 5 l i 5 Q 'gwuifi .F . g,,' 1 Mrs. Ruth Carter presents Mr. V with a plaque expressing the apprecia tion of those who served under him. Harris, 72-year-old graduate from Logansport, is congratulated by President Beckes for being the oldest student in the history of VU to complete a two-year program for a degree. Sam H. jones, director of the Urban League, delivers the commencement ad- dress to the 1973 graduating class. Accolades and honors were the order of the day as Vincennes University gradu- ated its largest class-734-in outdoor commencement exercises in front of the Maria Creek Chapel on the campus. Honorary degrees were presented to the speaker, Sam H. jones, executive di- rector of the Urban League in Indianapolis, and to C. W. Chu, Hong Kong busi- ness man who has sponsored some 65 students from the British crown colony to Vincennes University. A surprise honor went to Dr. Isaac K. Beckes, president of VU. The Board of Trustees voted him the William Henry Harrison Citation for his outstanding contri- bution to the welfare of the University. It was presented by Clarence McCormick, president of the VU Board. The highest class average honor was an unprecedented 13-way tie-that many students made a straight-A record for the two years at VU. This is by far the largest number ever to achieve a maximum four-point grade index at VU in one class. The speaker, long active in the struggle for social equality and minority rights, said that the present white generation is the first one to be affected by the black experiment in the U.S. The philosophy of our generation is equality that begins with race and extends to all phases of existence, jones said. We have 'new whites' even as we have 'new blacks,' and between us we'll build a new America, he added. He said that many things need changing today. How long must we live in two societies? he asked. How long must we send our young men off to die on for- eign battlefields? How long must we have unemployment? The speaker called on the students to travel the road that leads to self-realiza- tion. Don't be hedged in by such trivia as race, color, creed, or previous condi- tion of servitude, he declared. 231 ,..f, 3 W' ' 3' mw, ,, ff iw, , X .mg 'Q-43 ...f-'33 3 ?f57 Qi05'.+'4 'i 1 f' , 4, .7 f, ' Af .sf 2 Around amp . , .x ,X .
