VINCENNES UNIVERSITY GROWS Progress is a vague term. It is difficult to define in a fast paced society, and more difficult to realize. Webster’s New World Dictionary proposes that progress is a move- ment onward “toward perfection or a higher state.” It is here that a progressive Vincennes University finds its place. As beams reach to the sky and new structures arise from the useless remains of old, a new and unique kind of progress spreads at V.U. This progress began in 1801 when the infant school first brought educa- tion to the midwestern frontier. It contin- ued as V.U. pioneered in junior college education and established the open door policy to students who might otherwise have been left out. It took determination and spirit to build a campus which extends from O’Neil Air- port, east of Vincennes to an extention in Jasper. Concern and an aura of warmth raised the 1960 enrollment of 483 to the 1970 size of 2,900 students representing many parts of the world. Vincennes University’s building plans reach far in the future. Mrs. Vivian Fanton illustrates how Vin- cennes University will prosper.

IN ENROLLMENT AND IN STRUCTURE eee corsa: 2 2s. - kw ee ow eee ee re LO ee ee In this same decade, V.U. built three low- cost dormitories and began a fourth; expanded into aviation and mechanics, with the addition of an airport in 1967; renovated a pumping station, a warehouse, and an entire brewery complex into modern, well-equipped facilities; and bought one of the largest computers in the state. More important than this, V.U. has produced an atmosphere where the student has a second chance for an education. Where he is not lost in a shuffle with thousands of others like him. The University’s educational philosophy is de- signed to motivate a student to do his best and to provide him with sources of help when he falters. V.U. is one of the rare schools where even the president will personally help a stu- dent in need. This is Vincennes University, past and pres- ent, a portrait of change. As for the future, how can it fail as long as V.U. holds to its principles? This is progress V.U. style—one step at a time toward its goal—perfection!
