As the curtain opens a band of not-so bloodthirsty pirates and a bevy of beauti- ful daughters look on in “Pirates of Penz- ance.” This was part of the magic of Gil- bert and Sullivan, brought to Green Audi- torium by the V.U. Opera Theater under the direction of Professor Charles Beall. The cast was led by Roger Speicher as Major General Stanley, Mary DeLaughter as Mabel, Mike Smith as Frederic, and Donita Honey who portrayed Ruth. Singing by cast and chorus, and ac- companiment by Professor Richard Ertel combined to complete the program. Ruth, portrayed by Donita Honey, displayed her talent and won the audiences admiration. “Pirates of Penzance’’ gave the VU students a chance to exploit their talents. 26
