This year with the largest freshman class in the history of Lincoln High and many new faculty members, some students, teachers, and days were really mixed-up. However, after the first trying week, freshmen were able to be on the right floor each hour and usually in class on time, and teachers had become adjusted to the routine of a new school year. Brenda Bailey, a freshman, ponders the mess in her locker while debating which books she will take home. Selling books on the first day is Lyman Lance, a new teacher in the science department. Back To Class Routine Linda Dale and Rita Finke are seriously working on a complicated experiment while Jack McClure finds it amusing. Terry McGlone in background watches dubiously. Home economics is really an interesting as well as delicious subject. For further information ask Rita Page and Karen Parker. All eyes are on Susan Veils as she performs on trampo- line. We Created Floats For The Mr. Finke and seniors work hard to put together their last float. Sophomores put last minute touches on their float. Junifirs made stuffing napkins ' look like an everyday job. Seniors are working on their bird Parade Colorful floats, high-stepping bands, charming girls, enthusiasm pitched to a high degree, and a high-ranked gridiron team . . . these appeared to the graduate of Lincoln as he returned for the homecoming celebration. What he did not see, however, was the work and time put in on both preparation of the team and parade. After many hours of work on floats and weeks of training by the football team, both came through in fine style as the parade was successful and the Alices beat Wiley 19-14. Joan Gilliatt and Jean Milam ride on the Senior float Our Pride, voted the most outstanding float in the parade. The Playshop float, Scrub ' em Alices. brought laughs as it floated down Main. Sue Chattin is shown on Sponsor ' s float, Over the Rain- bow. f ? ' The Junior float caught the attention of the crowd by two huge bongos. Seated are Rita Finke and Sue Goodman. Vickie He- bert and Margaret Burton worked in Pulliam ' s Jewelry taking orders and keeping the accounts for the junior class rings. Large crowds of enthusiastic Lincolnites were present at all of the Alice basketball games. Sock hops were held every Friday night at the Coliseum. Champ Greenlee is the disc jockey for these WAOV Bandstands. To School Activities. Senior girls expressed originality through senior skirts. Pep sessions were used to stimulate the school spirit. The cheer-block this year broke all previous Lincoln records in size. J 6 ' ' , ID ■p| PD 9 S 7 9 nfi ' P. jwS? 4SEI ■: rl--:v : ' J M ■' fr ' k ■, ■' ■' ,. R pp ' ' ' U; Lincoln Organizations Help Some members of Junior Red Cross are packing Thanksgiving boxes to take to needy families. Ummm! Everything looks so delicious! At Thanksgiving all students of the school are asked to bring canned food which is sent to fam- ilies in the community. Junior Red Cross purchases fresh fruit, milk, cottage cheese, and meat so that the families may have a complete Thanksgiving dinner. Before Christmas vacation the various clubs have parties during the homeroom periods. This package is well wrapped or I ' m all thumbs! The end of a wonderful party ! ! 12 - ' ' -$ ' ' 1 .- , -. Create Holiday Atmosphere. Christmas at Lincoln is greeted by joy- ous faces filled with the ecstasy and antic- ipation of a young child. The traditional Christmas tree, the artful decorations, and the melodies of the season blend together to make this a Christmas better than any other. The last week, filled with the many parties, interrupted classes, and carol-sing- ing are remembered by Lincobiites and teachers as they leave school for a two week sabbatical. Elated Upperclassmen Attend Gala Prom For one night the junior class of 1959 changed the Coliseum into an elaborate nightclub, Club 59. They and their guests, the seniors, spent a memorable evening dancing and enjoying the atmosphere of a nightclub. Our Parents Visited Lincoln Open house was a money-making venture for the Junior Red Cross organization as they sold candy to the visitors. Open house, the night when parents learn at Lincoln like their children, was enjoyed by many this year. Teachers and parents alike found it a rather interesting experience. Miss Mann explains to a couple why their Johnny got what he did on his report card. The work of the art students was displayed in the window of the art room. David Grayson seems to be having fun getting charged up in Mr. Finke ' s physics laboratory. 15 Awards and Programs Encourage Left: The American Legion Football Award is presented annually. One of the busiest organizations in Lincoln High is the Lincohi Playshop, sponsored by Miss Elwood Miller and Mr. Charles Bridges. As has been the custom in the past, a three- act play is presented in the fall and in the spring, and a one-act play which is given for a convocation. There is a lot of fun in presenting ' a play, but with the fun comes much hard work. Many months of practice, late hours, and stage work go into these productions. Playshop not only combines work with play, but assists its members to develop a feeling of poise and confidence be- fore an audience. Each member tries his best to carry his own responsibilities in making the play a success. In the spring, persons with a specified num- ber of lines and points of recommendation are initiated into the National Thespian Society. These people are given special awards for their outstand- ing ability and work in dramatics. 20 Talents Are Developed In the spring, persons with a specified number of lines and points of recommendation are initi- ated into the National Thespian Society, Troup No. 548. Each of these Thespians has also been required to do committee work as well as help with the stage. The scholastic achievements of these outstanding students must be near the top. Get set ! Go ! cries the starter. Paul East, in his first year of coaching Cross Country, was very successful. With a team loaded with juniors, he made his way through a tough schedule. The Harriers ran in five dual meets, one triangle meet, one quadrangle meet, the thirty team Southport Invitational, in which big Jim Bagby, the state cross country champion from little Chesterton, won with a time of ten minutes, sixteen seconds. For this feat he received two gold medals and two trophies. Placing a strong fourth in the nineteen team S.I.A.C. meet and sixth in the twenty-six team sectional, the Alice thinlies showed great promise for next year. First, the team acquired a new coach, Paul East; and second, they received a new team, the freshman harriers. These boys, under the guidance and leadership of Coach East, trained hard all season. Beginning August 15, the freshmen began their three-month period of toil and sweat. They were permitted to rim in only one meet which they lost to the Ed- wardsport varsity team. The freshman harriers ran several relays against their own varsity against which they showed great promise for the future. Breaking several Alice football records, including the attendance record, the varsity squad fought their way to state recognition. Piloted by senior quarterback Larry Donavan, the Alices went through a ten game schedule with eight vic- tories against only two losses. The last game, deciding the S.I.A.C championship, went to Evans- ville Memorial Tigers 20-19. Memorial, who was ranked fifth in the state, scored all of their points in the first quarter. They showed great promise when they lost to fifth ranked Jasper by three points, and they lead most of the way in the game with fourth-ranked Bloom- ington and the Madison contest. They finished the season with an 11 to 9 record. The B-Team, under the guidance of Paul East for the third straight year, had an average season, finishing with an 8 and 9 record. The school year, 1959- 1960, has been a year of new experiences for Clarence Tol- bert in his first year at the post of principal. The enroll- ment of Lincoln swelled over the one-thousand mark, and new problems arose, each to be solved by the new princi- pal with the cooperation of his staff of educators. Miss Doris Yunghans is perhaps one of the busiest of the Lincoln High personnel. Friendly assistance is known to all as her byword. 109 Counselors Advise Students This is the first year that Lin- coln High School has employed two full-time counselors. Coun- seling has become a very impor- tant part in the psychological ad- justment of high school students.
