FRESHMAN CLASS The Freshman class, all new to the school last September, have already begun to show the invisible spirit which molds twenty-six separate individuals into a fine class. Scholastically, they boast of having one-third of their class as steadies on the Honor Roll. Early in the year, wishing to lessen the number of Frosh offenders in the new Student Court, they set up a Freshman Court composed of a Judge and other class officers, its purpose to try offending Freshmen without airing the matter before the student body. Athletically, Fall saw approximately one-half of Coach Zappone's J. V.'s composed of Freshmen. Somewhat fewer, approximately one-third, were represented on the C basketball team. Freshmen were also prominent at all school dances and at such organizations as the Sodality. After this fine beginning, we are sure that the Class of 1957 will be an out- standing credit to Villanova during their remaining three years. The hopes of the class and the expectations of the Faculty and fellow students have been fulfilled by their achievements. Outstanding per- formance in athletics has highlighted their record. Sophomores have made up an important part ot every team in every sport. Success in studies has been evident too. As they labored with Hercules, contemplated Geometry, and investigated the grasshopper, the list of Sophomores on the Honor Roll has grown longer. Whole-hearted cooperation has marked the class's participation in other school activities and projects-Sodality, Tidings drive, and the Missions. Much more will be expected of this class in the next two years and we can be sure that each and every member will do his best. 4,4 Io. as ax: ,Q ,V ' ins. Exemplifying the thought expressed, it would be appropri- ate to say that the aforementioned has been accomplished by the Class of '55. Being neither pretentious nor submissive, it can be said that we have been far from sluggish, and in some instances, more so an attribute to Villanova. We have approached, entered into, and accomplished many activities in the scholastic field as well as the athletic. From the thorough schooling and minute instruction we have thus far received, not forgetting the indispensable aid and guidance we have obtained from the Almighty, it may be assured that we will present a genuine threat to the ability and leadership of our predecessors. We who are now Seniors, salute you. VARSITY FOOTBALL A week before the date of entrance, a number of football hopefuls reported to Coach Salter on Villanova's gridiron, eager to start working out for a successful season. The first three weeks proved fruitful for the team although it suffered iniuries to some promising players. With a tremendous spirit, the Wildcats opened their season against Sta. Monica's, losing the game by a score of l3-O after a great deal of hard play. L ft to Right' E Martinez, R. Hernandez, e - ' - Villanova Backfield. S Fuller, H. Melendel. The next game was against the mighty Carpinteria Warriors who have been the champions for eight consecutive years. Here, too, the Wildcats were defeated by a 26-0 score. With two losses and no wins, the Villanova Wildcats met the Moorpark Mus- keteers, and still trod the road of defeat losing the game 32-0. Hoping for a come- back, the Wildcats met the Saints of Santa Clara, but a score of 46-O was the hardest Melendez goes for sh art ' - soma Burbafc won in ?ham aggmsl 50f1tc Barbara Catholic e closing seconds 19.14. fl Martinez breaks loose tor 45 years and TD against Nordhoff ef in closing game of the seascn ,ls-..... reqm l Cent ' Cdpfa- .loel Soren' In John Fairclolh 'r 1' I ,,., mwnqzg Righthalf Nelson Sorem Glfdrd Harold S of the season to bear. Still fighting to win, the Wildcats played a strong Harvard team, and were able to keep the score down to l3-O against themselves. But the spirited Wildcats weren't to go without victory through the season as they defeated Simi by a l9-l3 score. Fighting hard to beat the Cardinals ot Sta. Barbara Catholic, the Wildcats lost a close game by a score of l9-14 after having led their op- ponents up to tour minutes before the end ot the game. Although the 'Cats had lost most of their games, they wanted to win their last one against the Nordhoff Rangers, their rivals. The 'Cats played hard and well, and man- aged to be on top at the half but Nordhoff came back to beat them by a margin of 19-l2. With this, the Wildcats closed their sea- son which would have been a brighter one had not so many iniuries hampered the team, and had more lettermen returned. chw ' - lla TuzkleS Gmc 1-1 End Richard Cox and gwlticr 99 Left to Right, First Row: J. JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL The Villanova Wild Kittens, after playing hard throughout the season, came out with a 2 win 2 loss record. Too much had not been expected of the team because of in- experience and the power ofthe other teams in the league, but the J.V.'s, through inspired playing and great team spirit, finished with a respectable record. Their first game was against Carpinteria, they were out-played by the Warriors' fine blocking and swift backfield and came out A Torres starts off on a long jaunl against Santa Clara. Kittens won this one 18-7. on the losing side of a 20-O score. Lombardi and lnzalaco played well on the line, Mee and Cavallero did as well in the backfield. Seeking revenge, the Kittens whipped Santa Clara by a score of l8-7. All three T. D.'s were made by the outstanding Villa- nova back Bernie Lourito. Santa Clara put up a stubborn fight, but were overcome by the fine play of A. Torres and Theurer on the line, which completely nullified their offense. BASKETBALL- VARSITY The Villanova Wilcats, under the fine direction of Coach Fred Rice, closed the basketball season with a formidable record of 7 wins and 2 losses. This pro- vided them a second-place tie with Nordhoff in the Tri-Valley League. The 'Cats were defeated in their first game by the Cardinals from Santa Barbara Catholic, the present league champions, who managed to preserve a three point lead in the final seconds of an excellent game, going ahead to win 60-57. The Wildcats then took revenge on Moorpark as they defeated the Musketeers 52-41. The Wildcats were destined to be tripped once more and it was Nordhoff that did this as the spirited Rangers humiliated the Wildcats 54-38. The rest of the season followed through smoothly for the 'Cats as they ac- counted for six consecutive wins. lt was Santa Clara that first fell prey to the Wildcats by a score of 50 to 45. The game was marked by a scoreless fourth quarter turned in fby the overconfident Saints and the l6 point surge of the Wild- cats. Soon after, the 'Cats ran roughshod over Simi scoring 77 points to the Pioneers' 37. John Bralliar stole the show outscoring the opponents with his 40 points. Thacher and Cate accepted defeat with wide deficits. Santa Ynez, formidable contenders, fell at the hands of Villanova 48 to 43. And finally, toward the very end of the final game, Carpinteria threatened as the buzzer stopped their march, and the Warriors lost 58-56. The team produced such stars as Bralliar and Stewart who are meritorious of all league honors. Ravetti, Martinez, Hernandez, and Coles stood out on various occasions. Springer, Bernie Loughman, Braun, Walker, Faircloth, J. Sorem, and McCarthy were on hand faithfully supplying depth to the team and relief in the pinches. This season was one of the best that Villanova has had in many years. ll gfiwf-4. cf, W 1 ff i'vg'34'vf,?,kfM1li5 ' A 5 ufi P53 . .mmm '.. r Y u'f,3': in we 'K 'Y '-e ,. 5 xv' I f-ff-f-w,n.,:.p,zg iw R' 'P' I A ,1:f xl-f' 'if-K 1 , ll' -9 F-firm i G -1' -Q fi . . BASKETBALL- B SQUAD After two consecutive defeats by Santa Ynez and Simi in the Nordhoff Tourna- ment, the Villanova B Team certainly did not look like a serious league contender. As time went by, the Wildcats, led by Coach Bill Zappone, gained tremendously in experience and skill. The Cats played nine league games of which they have won 7 and lost 2. This outstanding record pushed them into second place in the Tri-Valley League. Five days after returning from Christmas vacation, the Kittens met Santa Barbara as their first league opponent. Playing fast, the Wildcats obtained an early lead and trounced the Cardinals 56-43. Next, they rolled easily over Moorpark with a 39-23 score. The Nordhoff Rangers were next, they didn't prove to be too tough an opposition, as they went down 39-24. A little overconfident by this time, the Kittens dropped their first game to Santa Clara 42-40 in a thiller which had to go 3 minutes overtime. After this upset, the Kittens tried hard to improve their play. They were more than successful, as they routed, consecutively, Simi 50-28, Cate 58-29, and Thacher 62-29. Soon the real test came for the Kittens when they faced Santa Ynez, the league champions. The Pirates, an excellent team, beat Villanova by the close margin of 48-42 in an exciting game which was decided in the expiring minutes of the game. Now the Kittens, fighting for second place and also seeking revenge, downed Carpinteria in a hard fought game which ended 63-53. The first five: Melendez, Moreno, Burke, .Fortmeier, and N. Sorem certainly proved to be a swift unit with great teamwork. The substitutes with M. Ventura, Lopez, Buenzli, Moore, A. Torres, and Rodee gave great depth to the team and were always ready to give a helping hand. Melendez and Fortmeier led the way in scoring, and Burke was always a threat with his deadly hook shots. The forward combination, Melendez and Moreno, worked out for a great many points. Defensively N. Sorem led the way. Arnoldo Moreno was elected season Captain of the B Squad by his teammates. We must congratulate Coach Zappone for his wonderful work in shaping out one of the best B squads Villanova has had in many years. ,J 34 .Ql ,pf fmw fi ii ig lov f 713 Rx 'XXV' Jk I Lett to Right, Kneeling: W. BASKETBALL- C SQUAD The Kittens had tough luck all through the season. They wound up with a one win, six loss record in the Tri-Valley League to take sixth place. They did play a little better than their record indicates, and they had several close games. The Kittens started off with their first and only win against Santa Barbara Catholic. This game was won in fine style with a 32-22 score. They dropped the next two games to Moorpark and Nordhoff respectively. ln the best game of the season, the Kittens lost a heartbreaker to Santa Clara in an overtime, 40-37. Our youngest team then lost their last three games to Simi, Santa Ynez, and Carpinteria in that order. A consolation, though, was the fact that our boys almost upset the lead champions, Santa Ynez, The Kittens were up for this game. They played hard all the way, and were ahead at the half, only to be edged out in the final period. Mention should be given to T.France, J. lnukai, Purl, and Vett who played good ball. Substitutes B. France, Muellenhoff, Nugent, and N. Johnson also helped out. The whole team showed potentialities, and should make a good B Squad next year. Thanks should be given to Coach Dick Salter who got out there and really put in some time with them. X Q' af 1 4 353525 6 N i ni A , Clif' Tag i Left to Right, First Row: Manager B. Theurer, E. Their very first practice game was a loss to Santa Paula ll to 2. but this was a good lesson. So good in fact that their next game, a week later, was a red let- ter day in their baseball history whipping Ventura A to 0, as Ronnie Stewart, with the unfaltering support of his teammates, threw a no-hit game. He sent down the Ventura Pirates in order in four of the seven innings of play. The 'Cats again gave a good showing in their first league game, as the combined pitching of Stewart and Davis held Santa Barbara to five hits and two runs, putting the Wildcats in the upper part of the score with three runs. This game was a thriller that had to go to extra-innings. This same kind of play that the Wildcats showed in the previous two games, is the play that made Villanova one of the best teams in the Tri-Valley League. The team was built around the fine returning lettermen: Oscar Torres, out- fielder, who received Honorable mention in the All-League Team, Arnoldo Moreno, who was chosen center-fielder in the All-League Team, Frank Eyraud, the third of the fly-hawks. Returning in the infield we have Eddie Martinez, the hard-slug- ging second baseman, and also Henry lnukai, the classy infielder who takes care of the hot corner. Robert Hernandez, the speedy and noteworthy short stop, was the solution for last year's problems. Coming from the J.V.'s to fill in at first sack, we had the fine fielder and excellent hitter, Bob Fortmeier. At the catcher's spot we had Ernesto Davila, who's great ability and pep was very valuable to the team, The Villanova pitching staff was made up of returning Ronnie Stewart and also Bob Davis, both of great promise and ability. These two were backed up by Bob Fortmeier and Southpaw Arnoldo Moreno, who were always ready to help out. Finally we have new-comers J. Bralliar, J. Ravetti, Don lmm, Henry Melendez and C. Torres who added the needed depth to the team. We must congratulate Coach Dick Salter for making the Wildcats of '54 one ofthe most successful baseball teams of Villanova. JUNIOR VARSITY BASEBALL The outlook on the Jay Vee Baseball squad is promising as the season gets under way. The 'Kittens, under the superior coaching of Mr. Zappone, are strong and have abudant depth. Even apart from league competition, the 'Kittens have confronted the Wildcat Varsity and have done considerably well . A great deal of their early practice and sound experience was ecquired by scrimmaging with the Varsity nine. Pitching for the 'Kittens are McCarthy, a veteran, and Jay Blackburn, a good chucker. In the catcher spot we have Rodee and Julio lnukai, both of whom are capable of handling the iob. At first base we have Muellenhoff and Jost, A. Torres and Amouroux at second base, and F. Torres handles third all by hmiself. Parke, a newcomer, sparks the team with his good performance at short stop. In the out- field we find Chip Oliva and Mayo at left, Chris Weigman at center, and Tommy France and Vett over in right field. Substitutes who fill in almost any position are Moore, J. Orrantia, Shallenberger and Dick Slagle. Whatever the Jay Vee's may lack in experience they certainly make up in team spirit and enthusiasm. We can be sure that if the 'Kittens play up to expecta- tions they will have a favorable season all around, if not a league championship. This year's Student Council was the most .active of many years. Evidence of this very important organization was manifested in almost every undertaking and activity of the school year. The main achievement of this group was the institution ot a Student Government. The Senior Branch of the Student Council was mainly responsible for the bringing about and maintenance ot this Student Government. David Maring carried on the duties of Judge during the first semester, while Pat Johnson took over for the second term. The Senior Court, as it was called, handled all small problems that arose in the course of daily life here at school. This was iust one of the many 'functions this Student Council entered into. Fr. McGrath, moderator ot the Student Council, was also very active and showed much interest in their enterprises.
