Buntain) Vestavia Conquers Carroll The Rebels ' game with John Car- roll was a special one for this Vestavia team since this game won the Rebels a berth in the 1984 6-A State Playoffs. They annihilated John Carroll, 38-7, to win the Area 11 championship. The leading Rebel scorer was Vincent Harris with two touchdowns. The remaining points were distributed among five other scorers including Chris Dickinson with a 37-yard field goal and four PAT ' S, Dow Coggin with a PAT, and Martin Maners, Jeff Benner, and Mark Pugh with a TD each. Defen- sive highlights included an intercep- tion by Aaron Conley, a fumble recovery by Mike Bates, and a blocked punt by Andy Wheat, which was recovered by Mark Pugh and taken into the endzone for a TD. The Rebel defense allowed only one long drive of 80 yards by the Cavaliers for a TD and PAT. Rebels Eliminate Eagles The mighty Rebels pulled off a 21-7 victory over the Erwin Eagles in their 1984 homecoming game. The first Rebel scoring drive was set up by a 69-yard punt return by Will Meadows. Vestavia then scored on a 16-yard drive with Vincent Harris coming in from the 8-yard line for the TD. Chris Dickinson kicked the extra point. The Rebs scored again in the third quarter on a 1-yard run by Will Meadows to finish a 60-yard drive. Erwin scored their first and only TD late in the third period and suc- cessfully kicked the PAT. Early in the fourth quarter, Vincent Harris broke loose for a 60-yard TD run, and Chris Dickinson kicked the PAT for the final score of the game. 135
