G The SGA is an organization of elected students who play a vital role in the running of VHHS and provide ef- fective representation for the VHHS student body. The purpose of the SGA is to assist in the management of the school and provide direction of school activities. A Christmas party is given each year to allow these students to become better acquainted and to share their Huency in this language. Tapping for Spanish Honor Society is in the spring of each year. French Honor Society French Honor Society exists to give credit to outstanding French students. To be accepted into the honor society each student must maintain an A average in French. They play a big part in the promotion of school spirit by attending school functions including football games, basketball games and wrestling matches. Club members attended several dinners, French films and other cultural events. In addition, several members at- tended the State French convention. AFS Club AFS (American Field Service) is students, families, and volunteers in six- ty nations working toward the goal of peace. In pursuit of this goal, AFS brings young people, families, and com- munities together to share an adventure in cross-cultural living and learning. The members of the AFS club are in- terested in the widening of their horizons by learning about other coun- tries and their cultures through the ex- change students who come to and go from Vestavia for intercultural experiences. The Leo Club is one of the most outstanding clubs at VHHS. The Leo Club, a branch of the Vestavia Hills Lion ' s Club, helps the community as well as the school with various projects. The proceeds from the annual Leo Club fruit sale provide the funds for the club ' s activities and their designated service project. Every year the Leo Club does an excellent job in organizing the homecoming dance and lead-out. Key Club The VHHS Key Club has had yet another successful year as one of the best clubs in the entire Alabama district. The Club has been involved in many activities, both within the school and in the community. Visiting the Alabama Sheriffs Boys Ranch, assisting the Special Olympics with fund-raising activities, directing traffic at every football game and providing food for the SGA food drive are just some of the club ' s services and ac- tivities. The Concert Choir competes in the district competition and various other competitions around the city, performing many different types of music. The Beginning Vocal Jazz Ensemble performs jazz and pop music and competes in April at the vocal jazz competition. Members of the Advanced Jazz Ensemble perform at the Christmas Madrigal Dinner and local club programs. Having coached at Ramsey High School for IVh years, he led many teams to state championship victories. His dedication to coaching was acknowledged on numerous occa- sions with his election to various offices in the 5th District Athletic Board and the Alabama High School Athletic Association. In 1970 he became the head football coach for the Vestavia School System and later served as assis- tant principal at Pizitz Middle School and as Director of Athletics. In recogni- tion of Coach Reynold ' s selfless character and many years of service, the VHHS stadium was dedicated on homecoming night and named Thomp- son Reynolds Stadium. With a dual meet record of 10- 4, the season was highlighted by a 33-21 upset over number one ranked Lee of Montgomery. The Rebels won the Berry tournament and came in second and third in the Hewitt-Trussville and Erwin tournaments, respectively. The team easily won the region tournament with all of the wrestlers advancing to the state tournament. Over fifty students participated in the sport of running, which requires long hours of grueling daily practice. In weekly meets, the outstanding runners were awarded trophies or medals. G Herrin The Vestavia Hills High School track team practices hard for the track season, which starts in March. This year the team met and ran with several world-class sprinters such as Harvey Glance. The meets in which the team ran included the King of the Mountain Meet, the Berry Relays, the University of Alabama Invitational, Huntsville ' s Rocket City Invitational, and the State Championship. o M The 1981-82 VHHS soccer team, coached by Rick Grammar, had another successful season. The learn started practice during AEA and con- tinued to practice daily throughout the season. The Rebel Soccer Team ended the regular season with a record of 5-2- 2. In post-season play, the Rebels went to the state tournament held in Mont- gomery. After winning three of the four games, the Rebels finally finished their season with a ranking of 3rd in the state. They cheer at football games, basketball games, and wrestling tournaments, as well as lead weekly pep rallies. This past summer, they attended a cheerleading clinic at Ole Miss. There they won superior ribbons. In the final competition, they were in the top 10 and brought home a spirit stick. The B-Team and Freshman Cheerleaders advance spirit at Veslavia. Both squads cheer at football games, boys ' and girls " basketball games, wrestling matches, and at pep rallies. This past summer, competing together at camp, the B-Team and Freshman Cheerleaders repre.sented Vestavia High School at the University of Tennessee. They received a spirit stick, superior ribbons, and were runner-up for the coveted award of ex- cellence. In November, they won a trophy as finalist in the NCA national competition. Ringier. N. Haas. m Under the direction of Mrs. Tanrnny Towns, the Rebelettes practice daily to learn and perfect their dances. They entered competition for the first time last fall in the " Space City Drill Team Competition " in Huntsville. Competing with other girls from Florida, Georgia, and Alabama, they received a trophy in every category entered and finished second overall. The Rebelettes perform at pep rallies and basketball games.
